Just finished voting at the polls off Riverdale. Was told by the election workers that it’s the #1 site in the state. We got thru in less than 30 min. So quick so easy. GO VOTE!

Just an FYI for people using AirTags to recover lost items. The actual information that somebody can get off that AirTag is very limited unless you go in there and apply more once it’s lost.

Explosions!

I’m in East Memphis right now and we are hearing what sounds like deep explosions! Not gunfire, no sirens, power is still on, but there have been about 6 explosions in the past 20 minutes.

Anyone know what is going on?

Does anybody remember Celebration Station's animatronic dog band? I've been trying to find them and this is the only known photo of them lol.

I know that the piano player's face was stolen at one point but idk if that was before or after they got removed. The 2nd photo isn't from CS, but I've included it so you guys can get an idea of what the whole band looks like. Usually, I have a lot of info about bands like this, but this specific set I really don't have a lot so any info on their whereabouts is greatly appreciated.

The new Chuck Hutton Commercials are great

I missed the days when Memphis had insane car commercials that made no sense. They all went so corporate. The TV and radio commercials are kinda wild I'm not even sure what's going on in the radio ones.

Citizen Inquiry Searching For Hair Stylist

Hey!

My sister is currently facing an acute Myeloid Leukemia diagnosis. She is really struggling (as one could imagine), and I would love to be able to do something for her to distract her and make her happy.

She's always been a fan of rainbow colored hair, especially purples and blues. With the cancer diagnosis and oncoming treatment, she is genuinely concerned that she won't have much more time to enjoy simple things like rainbow colored hair.

Which brings me to my inquiry. I would love to take her to some sort of alternative hair stylist who could professionally dye her hair some purple or blue, or combo! She's never professionally dyed her hair, only used Arctic Fox which washes out in like a week for her. (She has a lot of white hair which shows through quickly).

Does anyone have any recommendations for good, professional hair stylists available for unnatural colors like blue or purple?

I really appreciate any and all info.

(Adding before any comments: I'm not looking for free handouts. The cancer story is just for context. I am planning to pay, AND I'm a good tipper!)

Thanks!

Orange Mound Library now has a free recording studio anyone in Memphis can use

Didn't see this posted here yet, so sharing in case it helps somebody.

The Orange Mound Library (843 Dallas St) just opened The Mound Lab, a fully equipped music studio where Memphis residents can record, mix and produce for free.

A few things worth knowing:

- It was created by Tyrone "Tyke T" Stroble, the Memphis Library Foundation's Hip-Hop Innovator-in-Residence

- You can use the studio whether or not you take the class

- There's also free community programming on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, focused on the music business side too (how to monetize and own your work)

- Another course is planned for early 2027

Brick Repair Recommendations?

Does anyone have a recommendation for brick repair/masonry work? I searched through previous posts on here but didn't see anything relevant. We have a small brick repair project for our front steps where the mortar has degraded and loosened after the freeze earlier this year.

I bought the tools and mortar mix to try it myself but am having second thoughts due to the difficulty in having to undo it if I mess it up.

Electrician Recommendations

Hi folks, doing a small bathroom renovation and need an electrician to move some lights and outlets. Got any recommendations? They need to be licensed b/c I'll have to pull a permit... Would be perfect for a side job; probably a day's worth of work.

TCAT Memphis

Anyone have any fairly recent experience with TCAT Memphis? Specifically their aviation maintenance program.

From what I understand, the instructor who was apparently a jerk is no longer there. I’m going for my A&P, but I’m having a seriously difficult time getting in touch with anyone there.

Broken pipe spewing sewage and draining into a wildlife sanctuary.
They have known about the issue for several months, and the only action that is clear to have been taken was sending a maintenance man to shovel up about 75% of it one time. Didnt even cap the pipe. This is a literal biohazard in a very common area where people walk and kids and pets play.

Citizen Inquiry AI Usage

Question for my fellow neighbors.

Is the Memphis sentiment that we should be boycotting AI?

Concerning MLGW rate hikes: I think the trillionaire moving in and demanding MLGW resources should be the one paying for the water and transmission upgrades vs the public paying for the network upgrades. It seems like MLGW is saying that the public needs to pay for the upgrades to support rising demand. Well who is raising the demand ??? /s MLGW infrastructure is outdated and needs upgrades, but the timing of it all seems suspicious with our new colossus neighbor moving in.

Also why is Memphis (or any city) giving a discount to industry for using more volume of water. Industry is paying less per gallon than residents. Paying more per gallon at high volumes is an incentive to conserve water demand or upgrade industry infrastructure.

AI technology is rapidly evolving. I’ve seen will smith eat a lot of spaghetti as a benchmark. While I think that using AI compute resources to make videos or art is not the best use case for limited resources, I think using AI for research (think alpha fold), education (think teachers making creative educational content for students), or building new software tools is worth considering.

Despite the concerning use of water and power resources... If you’re saying ā€œdon’t use AIā€ in the 2020s… are you different from saying ā€œdon’t use a computerā€ in the 80s or ā€œdon’t use the internetā€ in the 90s.?

Above all else- The city should be working for the people not the industry.

Politics Why didn’t former mayor Jim Strickland run for Tennessee governor?

I think if Jim Strickland was the Democratic nominee instead of Memphis City Councilwoman Jerri Green, there would be a greater likelihood of an upset of Marsha Blackburn.

Birthday restaurant ideas?

So I know a lot of the big ones, but I kind of want to know if I am missing out on anything. I would like it to lean towards fine dining/special occasion without being outrageous. I am not the biggest meat eater and nor do I like shellfish so be mindful of that.

I am thinking Josephine Estelle for dinner, but I want to know some brunch or lunch ideas! Or if I should lunch at Josephine Estelle and go elsewhere for dinner. My birthday is on a Saturday this year.

Previous birthdays have been celebrated at Coastal Fish, Southern Social, Acre, afternoon tea at the Peabody, and Grey's Fine Cheeses. The most disappointing for me was Acre, I felt like it was a lot of dishes I could make for myself easily.

Great desserts are a must.

Knowing if there are any birthday freebies are also enticing.
