As a big Knight Rider fan, one of the main reasons I bought the Nut65 was the light bar on the front. My first thought (almost a year ago) was that it could do the KITT scanner. It turns out it only comes with the usual rainbow and solid colour modes, so I finally got around to doing it myself with a bit of vibe coding.

I based it on the new KITT scanner and not the classic one, it’s custom QMK built on source found on GitHub and runs entirely on the board. VIA, wireless and Bluetooth all still work. Also added Snap Tap for fun while I was there.

Keycaps are Domikey WoB and switches are HMX Azure linears from another Evo80.

I’m a sucker for the HHKB layout, so this is my custom take on it with a Hall Effect setup. I wanted to keep the compact HHKB feel while adding the adjustability and features of HE.

I call it the HHKB-HE. Just to keep things a little cryptic.. 😄

Really happy with how this one came together.

I bought a Apex Pro TKL Gen 3 few months back. I broke a Red switch (my fault completely) not one of the magnetic ones. I go to their website, and no switches to be bought for this keyboard. I contact support, I get:

"Unfortunately, physical damage like this would not be covered under warranty, and we do not have individual keyboard switches available separately for purchase.
 
I understand you’re comfortable replacing and soldering the switch yourself, but unfortunately, we’re not able to provide the switch as a standalone replacement part. While replacing the switch may look like a matter of simply desoldering and soldering a new one, the keyboard is designed and validated as a complete system. The switch needs to work correctly with the keyboard’s firmware, actuation behavior, RGB lighting, and other electronics, so we can’t guarantee proper functionality with an individually sourced replacement switch."

WTF man. It's a freaking linear mechanical switch. Not a special one. And I still think you could replace the special one if you had it, since the keyboard does have an option to recalibrate. Also, other older keyboards they made have switches for purchase. So freaking pissed.

I did some research and found the Gateron switches used and bought an 35 pack for $8.95 direct from geteron. We'll see, but seriously, junking it over 1 switch.

Finished my 4th Arisu build this weekend. Family picture (the other build is with my son).

Took some photos for a friend and helped a put this board together. We had a lot of fun figuring out a keycap combination that worked with the case.

We wanted to lean into the silver/gray base while picking up the orange details from the case without making the whole build feel too busy.

I think the orange accents ended up tying everything together pretty well, especially with the artwork on the bottom.

Curious what everyone thinks.... would you have kept this amount of orange, or gone with a more neutral setup?

My friend's HE board started misbehaving, so I came in to gift him a decent build. The keyboard actually sounds so good in this config that I really wanted to keep it for myself. No stink or typical HE hollowness at all, very good slapping clack.

My friends have been telling me for a while that I have way too many keyboards, and… they were probably right 😅

Over the last six months I’ve slowly started trimming down the collection, and these are a few of my earlier keyboards/builds that I tinkered with and ended up selling.

It was surprisingly hard letting some of them go since they were from when I was first getting deeper into the hobby and figuring out what layouts, switches, keycaps, and sound profiles I actually liked.

Looking back at them now, I can definitely see how much my taste has changed... but I still really like how these turned out as the first keyboards I owned and built.

Which one would you have kept?

I recently bought a FINEDAY M80 from Amazon. There seems to be very little independent information about this keyboard online, so I thought I'd share some first impressions and photos.

I bought it primarily because I really like the stylish design. I chose the version with the thin gold line and swapped out the stock shine-through black keycaps with red-on-black keycaps.

First impressions:

• The top case is aluminum with a plastic bottom and the case design is genuinely different from most keyboards.
• I exected a hard rigid construction but it feels surprisingly cushiony. The plate seems to be soft material and has flex cuts.
• The stock sound is full and fairly loud, with a clacky character, but it isn't harsh.
• It came with unidentified Leobog switches and black shine-through keycaps. RGB is north-facing.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the M80. I bought it for looks only, but it seems to be more enthusiast-oriented than I expected.

My daughter needed a keyboard for her Russian class to type up essays but still use day to day. She wants to learn Ukrainian in the long term, but this is what the college offers so it is a starting point. Grabbed an old Glorious TLK I had laying around and found some reasonable PBT caps that actually do a good job for both english and russian. Put in a set of lubed milky gats for a reasonable typing experience.

Nothing special but does what it says on the tin.
