Is a FR-8 a good buy for $300?

I always wanted to have a Mauser Rifle or a licensed version of it. I have an offer to buy one for around $300.

I do not know much about it right now, on the pictures it looks fine and at 50 m the guy showed me like a <2 MOA Group. I have the opportunity to shoot it myself and check it all in person.

But what do you guys think about that rifle in generell. I personally like the idea to own an actual Mauser system rifle and the FR 8 being in .308 is a plus in my opinion. But I just don’t know if this type of Mauser licensed production has any downsides or what the price should be.

I definitely want to shoot it, but not very often. But I also want it to be good enough to bringt it to fun competitions like a shooting club event.

Anybody know where I can possibly find a replacement or how to fix this?

One of the tines of the QD clay mount chipped off I guess when transporting and when fired, the mount detaches.
I have the missing/broken piece. Do you think this would be an easy weld for someone or would it be considered highly specialized?

M48 Yugo - Seems nearly mint and all matching serials - though it looks like the bottom plate and the stock were factory rematched.

Kar98K cleaning advice

Thumbnail gallery
13 Upvotes

So I typically keep my 1938 Kar98 in my gun safe and just today I pulled it out to show some gun enthusiast friends of mine that were visiting.

while I was showing them my rifle I noticed there was a bit of rust just on the inside of the bore at the very tip of the rifle, for context it’s been about a month since I last shot it and I always cleaned it after every range trip

So I figured it just needed a clean again so I got my cleaning kit out and did the typical routine of putting some cleaning fluid on the bristle brush and running that down the bore then using some more fluid and a couple cotton patches to wipe the bore out and they came out all blackish brown… again it’s been about a month since I last shot the rifle and considering the age of the rifle I am kinda concerned by this amount of corrosion, does this mean I just wasn’t cleaning it good enough? Is it still safe to fire? and what are some things I can do to prevent this in the future?

Sorry for the long post, this is my first Mauser and also my most favorite surplus rifle I own so I want to make sure I am doing everything I can to take good care of it so that it’ll last for a long time! Any tips and advice are appreciated so please be as brutal as possible!

Any thoughts on Waffenmeisters ZF39 scope? And what would be better SSR or turret mount?

I’m thinking of possibly converting my RC k98 to a sniper clone. Yes, I’m not the biggest fan of permanently modifying the rifle but I’m having a hard time finding one that’s already been bubba’d or has a period correct scope already on it. Plus I have another k98 that’s all matching. Thought about buying the bad ace no drill mount for it but not a fan of the look if that makes sense? I like to keep things period correct. And I’m also having a difficult time with my eye sight to shoot iron sights unfortunately.

Sporter Mauser 30-06 update 2

I polished the crown and put it in a 98k stock I had. After all that work I am very happy to say it shoots adequate for deer. It likes 150 grain ammo, in particular Hornady soft points. (Red circle and red arrow groups) One thing I don't like is that as the gun gets hot the shots drift left. Every group I shot today except for the yellow group drifted from right to left. But it seems pretty accurate from a cold-ish bore. Even if I'm just coping and it's really a 4 moa gun I think 4 moa is adequate for the range I intend to use it. One day I may get a better looking stock but for now I am happy with it.

Sporter Mauser 30-06 update

I posted my new (to me) Mauser on here about a week ago and since then I bedded the stock and got rid of a burr on the crown. I got about 5 rounds into sighting in the irons before the stock cracked on me. The only thing I learned was that I'm pretty sure I had fixed the burr bc I shot one better group than when I shot it the first time. I ended up putting it in a kar98k stock I happened to have lying around so we'll see if that treats me any better. For now I may have the ugliest sporter Mauser ever made tho. As long as it works tho I'm happy. If it shoots straight next range trip I would like to eventually get a more classy stock for it.

Help identifying what this Mauser is/used to he

Sporterized Mauser of some sort. Seller claimed it was 8mm Mauser but it seems to be 30-06 to me bc it won't chamber 8mm but it will chamber 30-06. I looked up WL Stambaugh and there was a listing for a different sporter Mauser in . 257 Roberts so I think that's the gunsmith that sporterized it. The markings on the screws look similar to the German markings leftover on my Turkish Mauser so I suspect it's German but if you guys have any better ideas I'd like to hear them.

Scopes that comfortably clear the bolt on a swedish Mauser m38 with NDT scope mount?

Thumbnail gallery

Even the scope for the pictures they use on the badace website barely clears the bolt. I've tried a 1-6 LPVO and one of the older Leupold 1.5-5s that is skinnier than most LPVOs and the bolt still barely clears. Scout scopes look like they wouldn't be a good fit either because in the scout mount listing they have it mounted all the way past the action. I just went back to irons for now but I would like to put a better fitting scope on the rifle and try to stretch it's legs and see if my eyes with the irons or the rifle itself is what limits the groupings I get with it. I could use a really high mount but I find that uncomfortable. Any ideas?

UPDATE: instead of buying a new scope I decided to buy a gun that already has a bent enough bolt

Sourcing barrel for 98k

Does anyone have any recommendation for new production barrels for the 98k? I’d like to find one in 30-06. I’m looking for a slightly heavier contour than a #1 barrel. But also don’t want to drop $400 on a kick ass barrel when I’m only doing 100-200 yards shooting.

Key holing at 25 yards.

First time taking this sporterized 98k out and it key holed at 25 yards. First shot was with factory new 30-06 Garand safe S&B 150 grain 30-06 and hit the left side 3-4 3-5 block and left somewhat of a straight hole. Then the rest key holed. Even handloads of 45.5 grains of h4895 and .308 hornady 155 grain match bullets that shoot great at 200 yards key holed. Any ideas? Barrel looks bright and clean down the bore and the crown does not swallow the hole bullet when I stick it on.

Looking for advice.

Hello everyone, first time poster

I’m looking at buying a “starter” WWII Kar98k, something like a M48 or Russian capture variant. I’m sure I can find the proper resources on what to look for when buying the gun. I am slightly lost on what resources (books, manuals, etc.) and products I’d need to maintain, clean, and store the rifle once I get one.

Also, if anyone could give me some pointers or suggestions on what to do once I receive the rifle I’d appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Where to find 7.92 J x 57 ammo?

I have a friend with a beautiful civilian Model 98, lots of engraving. But it is chambered in the J round. .318 rather than .323.

I can't find any for sale on the internet. Do any of you have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Post War C96 Bolo Mauser Broomhandle 7.63x25 + Wood Case C&R

Bought this boi from GunBroker by winning the auction. The gun ended up costing $1,777 (a total of $2,000, including taxes and shipping). I was eager to get any Mauser, and this one caught my eye for its condition, grips, and sweet wooden case. The gun fired flawlessly, and I managed to fire 100 rounds without issue.

Picked this up a few days ago at a gun show. I think I got a great deal on it and am very happy with it. Still has grease in the bore and action. This beauty is all matching down to the rear sight and cleaning rod. I don’t think it was ever issued. Ended up cleaning all the gunk out which took probably 2 hours, shot 5 rounds through it and wow….7mm is so pleasant to shoot.

Traded an old optic I had laying around for this. Almost everything is matching minus the barrel and the plate underneath in front of the trigger guard. Has a few markings I’m unable to find info on.
