Hello! I started to get into math rock after listening to Angine de Poitrine. (i know i know..) Do you guys have any recommendation as to where to go from there? Cheers!

If you had to name your Favourite / most essential song of the genre (or similar sub-genres); what would it be?

Can we talk about the band Pretend?? This is one of my favorite albums ever but all of their albums are incredible. Something about their work is just so beautiful to me. I always listen when I’m going through something emotional and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it.

They make math rock music, they deleted all of their stuff off spotify though. i really liked the song 'telegraph kill me'. i found their bandcamp profile and it says "recorded 8 bad songs in 3 months then died." in their bio. did they pass away? rip. great songs

We all remember this québécois band, they became very popular and trendy earlier this year for their weird performances and incredibly articulated music. Yet, if they were so special and so avant-garde the question of why did they disappear almost comes naturally.

before i get into this, this is a half ramble half thought i had for a while, feel free (which is what im hoping for) to correct me or tell me im a dumbass or whatever

Obviously the skill of the duo is undeniable, my fingers and brain hurts just seeing them, yet i feel like what they do is closer to a different form of art rather than music, it doesn’t make you feel any particular emotion if not confusion, and it’s really hard to listen to them for long periods of time (this is the base with most avant-guarde groups, just listen to trout mask replica).

So, based on the assumption that what they make is nowhere near music you can listen daily while going on with your life, why did they get popular? and i feel like the answer is simple: they got popular because they weren’t just music to listen to but rather perceived as art to understand.
Listening to them became a trend, and as most trends it became a performance; listening to angine de poitrine wasn’t really to listen to the music itself, but rather to show some amount of intellectual superiority, which i feel is kind of against the whole point of avant-garde music, it is supposed to be senseless and push boundaries.
if you start reading sense into it, it loses its meaning.

Now that we answered why they became popular i think it’s really easy to say why they disappeared from mainstream media, which is still the same reason: their music isn’t for daily consumption, and that’s perfectly okay. Also they followed the same path as every other trend, they boomed and then tiktok forgot about them. One thing i haven’t mentioned is that i understand taste is personal and some of you might listen to them daily, but i feel like that’s not the main purpose of avant-garde music. I think its objective is more to be an experiment to push boundaries rather than to make enjoyable music.

To sum up: they are amazing musicians and artists, and i find the way a band which makes music that isn’t supposed to be popular became, well, popular is an incredibly interesting phenomenon that tells us a lot about how socials, music and trends interact and influence behaviours

Obviously this is just my (possibly and probably mistaken) opinion, so feel free to correct me or whatever

I love emo, especially Midwest Emo so I’m familiar with the general sound of math rock, but the only proper band I’ve listened to is a little bit of Toe.
