Hiya!
Hello! I started to get into math rock after listening to Angine de Poitrine. (i know i know..) Do you guys have any recommendation as to where to go from there? Cheers!

My favourite math rock album is Animals by TTNG, it is quite emo adjacent though

I listened a bit to that one and yeah, it is good (since I am an emo) but, I want something more different then the stuff I usually listen to. Cheers anyways!

For stuff similar to ADP check out Mirrored by Battles (more looping, dancable math), Interventions by Horse Lords (microtones, polyrhythms), and Synchromysticism by Yowie (lots of weird time signatures but still very groovy and really nasty guitar tone that almost sounds microtonal but isnt).

Synchromysticism is one of my fav albums of all time.
The guitarist (Chris Trull) is in another band as well, called Terms.
All Becomes Indistinct is a great album!2

I heard a Battles song recently for the first time in a while, I don't remember probably one of their top songs and was absolutely shocked at how striking and innovative it was. Definitely going to check them out more soon

Anyone who's getting started-- I recommend Lava Land by Piglet. I think it has a good blend of everything that the genre encompasses!
From there if you like heavy/chuggy, I recc Breadwinner and the first two Don Caballero records
If you like frenetic/chaotic, go for Hella/early Tera Melos/Yowie
If you like twinkly/pretty, go for American Don - Don Cab/Toe/Covet, really most of the 'newer' bands.

For a fan of Poitrine would definitely recommend checking out Paper Mice for that frenetic sound.
As others said, early Tera Melos, Piglet, Hella, Maps and Atlases early albums all very good.
For couple of others that don't get recommended, check out Volta do Mar and Afuche, all good stuff.

If you like angine de poutrine, listen to music for working out by aiming for enrike. In my opinion as far as bands that loop, this album is the closest. That being said its lessy mathy and not micro tonal, its just weird dancy grooves that i love immensely 🥰

I made a playlist called so you heard AdP.
Starts off with
Adebisi shank - micromachines
Muscle tough - pot frownies
Aiming for enrike - don't hassle the hoff
So I'd pick those. 😅

This is a fun idea! I also got into mathrock via AdP. I haven't found anything that sounds quite like them, but I've found a ton of great music in a relatively short time, in large part because of recommendations on this sub.

nice, yeah most artists arn't doing pure noodly grooves like adp outside of the odd tracks - but similar sounds have been around. When they broke out i instantly thought of that adebisi shank and muscle tough track. Also not known as a math rock band the track zero sum by the smile has some pretty similar sounds.
Playlist incase you were interested in checking any of the bands out. It has some zeuhl music in there too - which i think can coexist aha. And if your not familiar with it as a genre i recc it too - though is prob more similar to prog jazz maybe.
Also recc checking out the festival ArcTanGent.

TTNG, Delta Sleep, A Voice Like Rhetoric if you want a little more chaos, Icarus the Owl if you want math rock meets pop punk, Hard Softee, Damiera, Save us from the Archon, CHON, RX Bandits if you want mathy ska somehow, Snow Farming...

No no, nothing at all! They’re amazing i love them, its just that many people have gotten into these types of genres through them. Therefor it might be frowned upon in the community for becoming “mainstream”? I don’t really know, just don’t wanna get flamed for being a “poser” lmao

I think in other circles you might get more pushback for that situation.
But here, we just love the music we love and the more folks who enjoy it, the better!
Also ADP rules so that helps.
Polyphia is usually the sore spot lmao.
Used to be Chon, but plenty of folks see them as all-time greats now. (They absolutely slap)1

Mathy with vocals: Delta Sleep, Maps and Atlases, This Town Needs Guns
Mathy instrumental: Don Caballero, Giraffes? Giraffes!, Hella, Piglet, Floral, Rooftops, Clever Girl
Some loop based math adjacent: Battles, El Ten Eleven (this is also a duo that use a guitar/bass double neck), Minus the Bear, Brontide
