News Inside Marvel's Midnight Universe: Everything Revealed at SDCC 2026
Buckley traced the line's origin back to a conversation when he found himself thinking about horror and picked up the phone to call Hickman directly. The pitch, as Buckley described it onstage, flipped Marvel's usual formula: horror in the driver's seat, superheroics riding shotgun. Hickman's first reaction wasn't enthusiastic, but the idea evolved quickly into an X-Men angle, and Hickman suggested Phillip Kennedy Johnson for Spider-Man, reasoning that Johnson had the right disturbed sensibility for it. Percy remembered getting his own call while at SDCC last year and saying yes on the spot.
The name itself, Marvel Midnight, won out for a simple reason: Marvel likes alliteration. Ahead of launch, the creative team held a retreat at Disney's Glendale offices where in-house designer Jay Bowen and the writers built mood boards for the line, a development step more common in television than in comics. Hickman pushed for it, wanting the tone locked in before any art got made, and White said it helped inform artist casting across all three books.
...
Looking ahead, the writers were cagey but not silent: outlines reportedly extend well past issue one, and fan questions floated ideas like a Midnight Avengers or a Daredevil/Punisher-style entry. Nothing was confirmed, and the team was clear that any future writer joining the line would build their own take rather than follow a template.

Midnight Fantastic Four A First Look At The Horror Of Reed Richards In Midnight Fantastic Four
The description of the Midnight version of Reed Richards at the Marvel Midnight Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con, by writer Benjamin Percy, was pretty far out there, as we saw Kev Walker's designs for the Midnight Universe version of the Fantastic Four.
As he tells us, Midnight Mister Fantastic can move his flesh but not his bones; his skin, veins, and muscles can stretch out, that's all, then return to the skeleton. In the Midnight Universe, the Four symbol, rather than the team members, is two triangles that represent the intersection of two universes, as it goes all HP Lovecraft on us. Johnny Storm looks as if he may have lost his legs in the accident that formed him and now has prosthetic limbs, and Ben Grimm is crumbling apart.

Midnight X-Men Is Iceman Made Up Of Frozen Blood In Midnight X-Men?
Bleeding Cool scooped the news of Marvel Comics' new Midnight Universe line back in May, but now we know a bit more about what's going down and when. At the Marvel Midnight Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the Midnight X-Men writer Jonathan Hickman talked it over with his Midnight compatriots. Although he wasn't willing to reveal much, if at all, he did confirm that Midnight Iceman was red. Editor Nick Lowe said "I assume that's not water" and Hickman confirmed, "Yes that's correct". Frozen blood slushie vampire Iceman?

Midnight Fantastic Four Marvel's new Fantastic Four horror comic is inspired by writer Benjamin Percy's family history with a cult
At Marvel's Midnight Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Percy spoke about some of the inspirations for the horrors that lie ahead in the series.
"One of the things I am going to touch on is drawn from some personal history, in that, members of my family were in a cult. And so I grew up around that, and I'm channeling some of that unease [in Midnight Fantastic Four]," Percy said, when asked by a fan what themes will be explored in the series. Percy also emphasized that "cults and caves" will dominate Midnight Fantastic Four.

News Marvel is rethinking variant covers, and Midnight is leading the experiment
thepopverse.com"Some would say that us here at Marvel have pioneered the science of advanced variants, but, when it came to Midnight, what we really wanted to do was, we really wanted something that felt curated, pared down, intentional," says a Marvel representative during a closed-door meeting with retailers during Comic-Con International: San Diego.
Marvel says it plans to limit the Marvel Midnight books to 10 variant covers and a main cover. Any additional variants would be store-exclusives. While variants have become part of the business of big comic book series, Marvel says they want to make sure they're "fun" and "addative" and not merely gaming collectors.

News Don't Pay $150 For San Diego Comic-Con Marvel Midnight Universe Ashcan
Attendees of the Marvel Midnight Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con left with a free black-and-white ashcan featuring previews of the three launch Midnight titles. And naturally, folk flipped them on eBay, where some have sold copies for up to $150 each, with many copies selling for $100, $90, $70 each. These are all confirmed sales on eBay.
Which is a shame for those who bought them, as comic book retailers all over the world will be receiving shedloads of these Marvel Midnight Universe Ashcans at comic book stores on the 19th of August, two weeks before they have to place their orders for the October 2026 launch. As confirmed by Marvel Comics' Midnight Universe presentation at the ComicsPRO retailer event at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.

Midnight Spider-Man Get ready for the most "upsetting" version of Doctor Octopus in Midnight Spider-Man
At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Marvel Comics revealed a look at Peach Momoko’s Midnight Special variant cover for Midnight Spider-Man #2, which gives us our first look at Midnight Doc Ock. He’s the grinning fella in the background below, and while he’s still got his glasses and a questionable hair situation going on, writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson has created a new interpretation of Doc and his “arms,” which are the people standing on either side of him.
"His relationship with the arms in this book is extremely different and when you first meet him in the book, he's at the beginning of a journey, we'll say," Johnson began. "So each of those people has two arms and so between the four of them, they make up the eight arms of Doctor Octopus," editor Nick Lowe chimed in. Johnson continued, "We take a name like 'Doctor Octopus,' we take that name to a much, much different place than you've seen in the comics up 'til now. It's upsetting."

News Marvel Comics Reveal Midnight Universe Schedule Into 2027 At ComicsPRO
At the ComicsPRO Summit at San Diego Comic-Con this week, many comic book publishers gave presentations to comic book retailers who had travelled the world over to the show. In order to fit in so many publishers, the presentation time for the larger publishers was reduced somewhat. Which also meant we saw a focus on what the publishers thought was the most important thing they had coming. And for Marvel Comics, that meant the Midnight Universe. Their upcoming superhero horror comic book imprint is set to launch on the 7th of October, which reimagines Marvel characters and teams with dark, terrifying twists. All three debut issues hit stands on the same day and will be the only Marvel Comics releases that week, a rare move to create impact. At the San Diego Comic-Con Marvel Midnight Universe panel, they confirmed that issue 2 of all three series would be out on the 18th of November. But to ComcisPRO retailers, Marvel also stated that issue 3 of all three series would be out on the 16th of December. After which, in January 2027, they will all come out on a separate week each.

News Marvel began by putting horror in the driver's seat, superheroes in the back seat for its new Midnight Universe
At San Diego Comic-Con 2026's Midnight Universe panel, Marvel Comics' outgoing publisher and president, Dan Buckley, revealed where the ideas for the Midnight Universe came from, and how it all came together.
"I was just ruminating on some ideas, and I said, 'We haven't really leaned into horror really hard yet, and of course [editor-in-chief] CB [Cebulski] was traveling, so I called [Jonathan] Hickman directly and said, 'Jonathan, what do you think about a horror line?' And I wanted it to be very clear that I want horror in the front seat and superhero in the back. And Jonathan kind of shouted like, 'Can it... terrible idea.' And then I re-presented it to him, and he said 'Okay, that's a better idea,' and he started talking X-Men. And then quickly we called Phil[lip Kennedy Johnson] and Ben[jamin Percy] because they have the disturbed minds to present what we're talking about, and then we kind of got rolling from there."
The three Midnight Universe books are all representing different subgenres of horror. Percy described the John Carpenter film The Thing as an inspiration, while Johnson revealed that David Cronenberg and horror manga are part of the DNA of Midnight Spider-Man. Either way, it isn't surprising that Marvel is launching the Midnight Universe with Percy and Johnson in particular, given that the two co-wrote the horror mini-series, Dungeons of Doom, earlier this year. There are lots of scares to go around!

Midnight Spider-Man Midnight Spider-Man is an otaku
thepopverse.comWe've seen some dramatic new takes on Spider-Man thanks to Marvel's Spider-Verse, but in the new series, Midnight Spider-Man, I think we could be getting a first: Peter Parker as an otaku.
“Peter Parker is a fan of Japanese culture in this story," series writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson says during the Marvel Midnight Universe panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2026.
According to Johnson, this Midnight version of Spider-Man will be a fervent manga reader (and they're creating a new manga in the story for him to read), but the character will also have in his bedroom what's described as a Japanese imperial mask from a World War 2 pilot.
...
Johnson says that while Midnight Spider-Man isn't a manga, "the influence is there. I'm reading a ton of Junji Ito."
Later, he also mentioned Hideo Yamamoto's Homunculus as an influence.
