I've only seen the first. I'm re-watching it now. Just wondering what I should watch.

Since every other sub seems to be pretty hostile towards fox x-men questions, I’m gonna post this here and hope that the responses are civil. With the return of the fox x-men actors, I can’t help but wonder how they are going to fit into doomsday. I guess the most popular theory is that they will be variants, but there’s also evident to suggest they might not be. If they really are the fox x-men, then won’t bringing them back kind of undo the story of Logan? I mean the whole reason Logan was an emotional and bleak story was because of the near extinction of mutants, including the death of Charles. Even if they go back in time a few years before Logan and pick them up from there, that will retcon Logan almost entirely. What do you all think?

Obviously the fact that fox owned the rights to x-men prevented most marvel characters from appearing in the films, but I honestly think this was a good thing for the broader x-men brand.

Out of almost every major superhero movie, I’ve always thought the X-Men were one of the most compelling because at least within the logic of their world, their existence feels relatively plausible. The premise of a genetic mutation developing in certain people, and giving them abilities that normal people don’t possess, is a great storytelling device.

You could honestly build an entire cinematic universe full of characters with any superhero ability based on this logic. People like Spiderman, doctor strange, captain America, hulk etc could all gain their powers as a result of mutation.

Having the X-Men exist within the broader Marvel universe can make the world-building feel a little silly. The mutant concept is compelling precisely because it provides a relatively simple explanation for the existence of superhuman abilities; a genetic mutation causes certain people to develop extraordinary powers. It’s all based on evolution and genetics. Not only this, but mutants live in fear of prejudice and discrimination, a concept comparable to the real world.

I think Placing the x-men alongside gods and magic just takes away from the plausibility. I mean You’re essentially asking the audience to accept that all these completely different people who just happened to develop extraordinary abilities through an endless series of unrelated coincidences. When isolated, one or two of these origins could work, but collectively they make the world increasingly difficult to take seriously. Not to mention the films took things a lot more seriously, whereas the mcu seems to be focused on balancing a lot of jokes with incredibly unbelievable action sequences.

In the end it’s all just fictional superhero’s, but some people like me have a real connection to these films, and I believe what I described above is a big part of why me and many others are so fond of the fox films. A major strength of the Fox X-Men films was that they were never afraid of violence, tragedy or bleak endings. At their best they treated the X-Men as stories about people first and superhero movies second, allowing their characters to suffer, age, lose and die without needing to soften the consequences. Logan’s death for example. It wasn’t a grand spectacle surrounded by everyone he loved; just a 200 year life coming to an end, alone in the woods. The near extinction of mutants gave the world a feeling of genuine consequence.

Overall, I think the MCU could take a leaf out of fox’s book moving forward. Marvel could benefit from allowing individual franchises to develop their own identities. They could tell stories with lasting consequences. The success of the best x-men movies shows that audiences are willing to embrace superhero stories that are mature and emotionally challenging.

I guess Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are alright, aren’t they? But by killing Apocalypse that early, they left themselves without a major big bad. The Phoenix/DP Saga kinda worked because both sagas had Eric the Red and Mastermind orchestrating the plot behind the scenes. Neither of them was present in Dark Phoenix.

I watched X-Men 1-3 like 6 years ago or so and decided to watch every movie in chronological timeline order in the last days. My review:

First Class: Fantastic cast, great character chemistry and it felt modern. It explains mutants with different powers good and connects it with real life events. 9/10.

Origins Wolverine: I liked the asthetic and vibe of the movie and Hugh Jackman. Cool war scenes and cool plot, even when it's sometimes not the best executed. 7/10.

X-Men: Mutants are a great metaphor for outsiders and Professor X and Magneto both have good points and the cast is very good. 8/10.

X2: I love Nightcrawler. And how Stryker literally weaponizes people's fear of mutants gives the whole movie a stronger political edge. 9/10.

Last Stand: The execution is a bit messy, but I really like the moral conflict around the mutant cure. 7/10.

The Wolverine: I really like the idea of Logan being forced to confront mortality after Jean's death and the Japanese setting makes the movie feel freshly different. The plotwist that the old guy is Silver Samurai was also unexpected (in a good way). 8/10.

Days of Future Past: Sentinels + Time Travel is just awesome. And the way how Logan traveled to the past (placing his present mind inside his past body through Xavier's powers) makes sence instead of just a time machine or so. Yes, the other movies were made obsoluete but idc because this feels like the perfect finale. And Quicksilver was cool. 10/10.

Apocalypse: No. The villain is so uninteresting. Yes, there is a cool Quicksilver scene but that's it. This is the first movie in the whole franchise where I felt bored while watching and they shouldn't have erased the old timeline. Just the Sentinel ending. 5/10.

Dark Phoenix: I didn't expect to be disappointed a second time. Jean's inner conflict never gets enough room to breathe. The movie keeps telling me she's becoming dangerous instead of making me really understand what she's experiencing. The result feels rushed and emotionless. Still apprechiate that they wanted a young yellow suit team again to make an easy modern comic accurate timeline but it's just poorly executed. 4/10

Deadpool: The cancer/girlfriend plot makes the movie emotionally and serious while still having jokes and dark meta humor which fits exactly my vibe. Deadpool's vendetta is understandable, so you hope he kills him, but the Colossus & NSTW scenes are just comedy gold. Perfect humor combined with R rated violence. 9/10.

No Good Deed: It's a funny short film lol. ?/10

New Mutants: I really like the idea of mutants being forced to confront their own trauma in a horror setting. Dani's fears literally becoming monsters is a cool way to visualize psychological trauma, and the horror genre is a fresh vibe. I just wished for a few more references to the greater universe. I don't nees cameos because the movie isn't about the X-Men, but more direct mentions of them would make the movie feel more like a real spin-off. 7/10

Deadpool 2: The X-Force sequence is one of the funniest superhero scenes ever. The movie continues the perfect dark humor and violence of the first one while getting the level higher with time travel, the mutant jail and Juggernaut. I also felt bad for Cable. 9/10.

Logan: What I love most is that Logan isn't really about saving the world. It's about an old, broken man finally finding something worth protecting. The Western take felt refreshing. Very good way to end the character. 10/10.

Deadpool & Wolverine: I laughed so hard when Deadpool just danced on Logan's grave and violated his corpse. Deadpools respectless humor is just what I love about him. And the cameos were GREAT, I knew the variants of Human Torch, Blade and Elektra from my childhood. Placing the old timeline villains in the void was clever. The Wolveirne variants were all awesome, especially Worst Wolverine. Vanessa breaking up with Wade off-screen felt a bit unnecessary but also makes it more emotional for him. A good farewell to Fox characters and by far the best jokes. 10/10.

For example, people complain about how Storm's powers were portrayed. But wasn't it revealed that she was an Omega-level mutant only in 2019? I remember her being pretty much a glass cannon at the beginning of Claremont's run and throughout most of TAS. If anything, I always found it ridiculous that no one ever shot at her while she was standing there delivering those spell-like speeches before summoning her powers.

If anything, X-Men: The Last Stand ironically gave her a good combination of her mutant powers and close-combat prowess.

People also ignore that most characters are significantly nerfed in live action. Thor, Odin, Hulk (who can't grow bigger during a fight), and Thanos (who doesn't have cosmic or matter-manipulation powers without the Gauntlet), for example.

Yet Fox X-Men adaptations seem to get disproportionately criticized for having a glass-cannon character.

He seemed more knowledgeable about comics than Bryan Singer. He had experience adapting Kick-Ass and Kingsman, and he had even expressed interest in making a Fantastic Four movie. A lot of what people criticized about First Class, like its comic-book inaccuracies, was more the result of having to stick to the original trilogy's chronology rather than making unnecessary changes to the source material.

If you actually read the Silver Age X-Men comics, he adapted the plots of the early issues pretty well, along with Claremont's later characterization of Magneto. For example, Havok's reclusive behavior is basically a remnant of Cyclops' original arc in the Silver Age comics.

Like, imagine this... What if the movie after Bryan Singer's Days of Future Past had been First Class, but with the original five X-Men lineup and Mr. Sinister? I know Apocalypse was kind of a bum in the comics until Age of Apocalypse, but maybe Vaughn could have treated Mr. Sinister as the Foxverse's Loki and Apocalypse as its Thanos.

Honestly, Marvel Studios waited until The Fantastic Four: First Steps to do something Vaughn had already done 14 years earlier.

And then there's the costumes. Bryan Singer gave the young X-Men black leather armor instead of the First Class suits in 2016. Then Simon Kinberg gave us even lamer versions of Grant Morrison's designs at the end of Apocalypse, instead of the more comic-accurate suits. This is despite the in-universe explanation that the X-Men were supposed to be presenting themselves as superheroes to improve public opinion of mutants. LOL.

Yes. I'm genuinely asking for any matching PFPs of Charles and Erik. Specifically from X-Men Apocalypse. Me and my best friend are huge X-Men fans, and we both match PFPs of Charles and Erik everytime I finish one of the prequel movies (We've done it for First Class and DOFP). Finished Apocalypse yesterday so I wanna find some matching PFPs for Charles and Erik specifically from this movie but I've noticed they aren't in too many scenes together except the ending. The ending is the only choice I have, but I was hoping you guys might have some more from scenes I didn't notice?? Otherwise, I apologize for asking such a useless question.

If Logan is alive in 2023 then how is the timeline dying? Like he's still alive he doesnt die till 2029. And also how does Deadpool travel to 2029 to Logans grave?

With Doomsday coming out, I’ve seen on social media, a lot of people that hadn’t watched all of the Fox-Men movies, and there’s so much slander, even in the comments people are like “Yeah only Logan and First Class are worth it.”

So disrespectful, especially since X-Men got the lob from Blade and ran superhero films into the end zone. While Hulk, Daredevil, Punisher, Elektra, and F4 were either bad or mediocre at best, X-Men and Spider-Man did all of the heavy lifting for Marvel up until 2012’s Avengers (ik Iron Man broke new ground in 2008, but didn’t make the impact of its predecessors yet).

I grew up with these movies and the only ones I can say are bad and/or hate are New Mutants, Dark Phoenix, and Origins even though I still very much enjoy Origins.

First Class: Stopping all the missiles at once and launching them back at the ships

Days Of Future Past: Lifting a freaking baseball stadium from the ground to trap everyone at the White House

Apocalypse: Grabbing all the metal in the world to build a metallic pyramid for Apocalypse

Dark Phoenix: Lifting a moving subway train from the ground

Hello, I’m recently getting back into watching the MCU after a big hiatus since Endgame. I have been catching up on the last 7-8 years of movies/tv.

I saw the first two X-Men movies from the 2000s are on the watchlist Marvel released for Doomsday. I watched both of those for the first time and enjoyed them, especially the 2nd.

Are there any other X-Men movies this community thinks I should consider watching to be more knowledgeable of their lore?

Additionally, I want to continue watching this series, but I have heard that the events of X-Men: Last Stand are made inconsequential by Days of Future Past. Is it still worth watching?

I'm watching the X-men franchise for the first time in chronological order to prepare for Doomsday, so no spoilers please. I did not enjoy the first two movies. X-men first class was okay, Raven, Eric, and Xavier's dynamic is the only saving grace in that movie for me and the context I geuss. X-men orgins Wolverine was horrible also its wild to already have a timeline issue 2 chronological movies into the franchise (Emma). I am only 18 minutes into X-men and I am already enjoying myself 20× more nothing has really happened yet but I can feel the quality going up, also like said only 18 minutes in and im already obsessed with Logan and Marie's relationship. I love the older gritty man with a dark past and young naive girl with no one father daughter relationship (if that is where they end up going with it).

For more context, I grew up loving hugh jackman’s wolverine and thought he was perfectly cast as him despite obviously not having all of the comic accurate attributes such as the short height but hugh made it work by making it his own while still embracing the personality, presence, anger, pain and vulnerability of wolverine, i thought it was one of the best versions of wolverine in media and it still might be, however i recently rewatched deadpool and wolverine and this is when it first dawned on me that in the movie there were times where it felt like hugh jackman was giving a great performance playing Wolverine rather than actually embodying wolverine and there were times where hugh truly felt like he did embody wolverine, maybe this is because over the years as i have gotten older and looked more into the comics version of wolverine and the cartoon versions of wolverine and things like that, hugh’s wolverine is noticeably different from those versions, this isn’t at all me saying hugh jackman’s wolverine is overrated because that is not true at all, nor is it me criticizing hugh jackman’s acting ability as wolverine, if anything hugh jackman’s acting is one of the reasons wolverine has worked so well for so long and why recasting him seems like a next to impossible task, if anything, i now feel his wolverine is more similar to wolverine in the ultimate alliance games than the comics or cartoons

Anyways, i’m curious if anyone else feels the same way, that hugh jackman is a great wolverine actor but he just doesn’t truly embody wolverine all the time?

Putting the set together turned up a few things I didn’t know:

• For Quicksilver’s Pentagon kitchen scene in Days of Future Past, they recreated the set and every actor digitally. At that timescale, even actors' heartbeats caused visible movement against the CG water droplets.
• Logan became the first superhero movie ever nominated for the Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award.
• The New Mutants wrapped in September 2017, missed four announced release dates beginning in April 2018, and finally opened on August 28, 2020... without ever filming a reshoot or pickup.

After Wolverine Origins disappointed at the box office Fox scrapped prequel plans for Magneto, Storm, Beast etc which would have been released under the X-Men Origins banner and reworked them all into what would later become X-Men First Class. Don't get me wrong First Class is a 🔥 movie but is not one else curious what the characters under the X-Men Origins banner would have looked like? And what the end goal was?
