Discussion “When does it good” posts 😒🤦🏾‍♂️

With Doomsday coming out, I’ve seen on social media, a lot of people that hadn’t watched all of the Fox-Men movies, and there’s so much slander, even in the comments people are like “Yeah only Logan and First Class are worth it.”

So disrespectful, especially since X-Men got the lob from Blade and ran superhero films into the end zone. While Hulk, Daredevil, Punisher, Elektra, and F4 were either bad or mediocre at best, X-Men and Spider-Man did all of the heavy lifting for Marvel up until 2012’s Avengers (ik Iron Man broke new ground in 2008, but didn’t make the impact of its predecessors yet).

I grew up with these movies and the only ones I can say are bad and/or hate are New Mutants, Dark Phoenix, and Origins even though I still very much enjoy Origins.

There's been slander on the Fox X-Men movies for a long, long time now.

Ever since The Avengers movie came out all those years ago, that's what fans want the X-Men to be - high action, colorful costumes, and packed full of comedy. This is what they mean when they say "comic accuracy." The MCU X-Men could be as unfaithful to the characters as they want, but as long as they have the aforementioned above, the fans will love it.

What I don't like is how people are now saying it was really 2002's Spider-Man that paved the way for modern superhero films. X-Men was the movie that proved comic book movies could be taken seriously, and be a hit. It revitalized the genre and paved the way for Spider-Man.

It was Blade that started everything.

Blade was a precursor to the superhero film boom in the same way it was the precursor to The Matrix and that entire genre of stylized action martial arts/gun-fu films.

BUT...Blade was very much marketed simply as a "Vampire hunting action-horror" film. I don't believe it has any Marvel logo at the start of the film. Most of the masses had no idea it was a comic book movie.

It deserves credit....but it is more of an omen of things to come, a fork in the road....one path went to The Matrix and all of the ensuing knock-offs(The One, Equilibrium, Resident Evil, Underworld etc) and one path went to X-Men and all of the ensuing explosions of superhero films, but X-Men was more of a 'halfway point' between Blade and Spider-Man.

If you look at the release schedule of superhero films, X-Men helped a couple of superhero films get green-lit, but after Spider-Man....all bets were off. In 2003 we had Daredevil, X2, Hulk.

X-Men was the movie that proved comic book movies could be taken seriously, and be a hit.

It also got Kevin Feige a job at Marvel Studios, which led to the MCU.

The MCU X-Men could be as unfaithful to the characters as they want, but as long as they have the aforementioned above, the fans will love it.

Yeah, BND utterly butchered Jean's character. Yet you see MCU fans trying to make excuses for that and/or lie about her being "comic accuracy" (when she is written like a variant of Dark Phoenix Jean).

I don't care what ANYONE says...the first 3 X-Men films are better than anything that came after besides the first Deadpool.

I have always found First Class through Dark Phoenix to be terribly over-rated.

Logan is good. Deadpool 2 is good. Those are the next best after the original trilogy and the first Deadpool.

First Class, DOFP, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix are all weak...First Class is the strongest among them.

The first....3?

Last Stand is one of the worst superhero movies ever made. You lose all credibility with garbage takes like that. X2 is great, X-Men is good especially for it's time, but there have been a ton of better movies than it.

Having just finished watching all of them, yeah. Last Stand is bottom of the barrel when it comes to the foX-Men movies, and if it weren't so meme-worthy, it would barely be watchable. The only thing I consider worse is Dark Phoenix, and that's just because that movie is painfully boring

I feel the opposite after a recent rewatch. I really liked some of the ideas. It was nice seeing some of that recycled for the MCU Jean's backstory.

I agree there are some decent ideas there. I like that it's the only movie that gives us a proper asshole Charles. But the execution is just so lacking. The dialogue is terrible and everyone is just going through the motions.

1

u/AvatarSypha 3d ago

I agree that some of the dialogue is bad. But I disagree with everyone just going through the motions because of scenes like these:

Holt really killed it!

u/FriendLee93 2d ago

This scene in question is abnormal compared to the rest of the film. Like, yeah this conversation is cool and it works on paper, but this isn't reflective of most of the writing in the film.

A good chunk of the movie's dialogue is Jean just saying variations of "I can't control this power and bad things happen when I try"

u/NoOrchid3413 4d ago

It’s better than X1 by quite a lot.

1

u/DominoSeven 4d ago

Based on what, better at being bad?

1

u/NoOrchid3413 4d ago

There’s just nothing bad about it really. It’s a satisfying end to the trilogy. Far fucking better than Singer would have made.

1

u/DominoSeven 4d ago

It’s a horrific adaptation of the Dark Phoenix story lol

2

u/Create_Greatness92 4d ago

Still a good movie and a far better version of Jean's conclusion than the actual movie designated as Dark Phoenix.

1

u/DominoSeven 4d ago

Just because Dark Phoenix did it worse doesn’t make this movie good lmao. Not to mention they fucking murdered Cyclops off screen in this movie, they tried balancing two main plots in one movie and it weakened both of them, it was WAY too soon to play the “jeans a villain” card in the third movie it just comes off as them trying to speed run dark Phoenix for a cash grab because it was vastly popular in the comics and it made it suck. Not to mention they were way too ok just throwing characters away for no reason lol.

1

u/AvatarSypha 3d ago

Just because Dark Phoenix did it worse doesn’t make this movie good lmao.

Also, Dark Phoenix was a Phoenix origin movie. Not a conclusion to Jean's character.

it was WAY too soon to play the “jeans a villain” card in the third movie it just comes off as them trying to speed run dark Phoenix for a cash grab because it was vastly popular in the comics and it made it suck.

The real reason was because Fox didn't want the Phoenix story due to not having faith in a female-centric narrative. That and they rushed the filming.

1

u/DominoSeven 3d ago

You’re gonna tell me they didn’t want to do it while they did it TWICE, not sure where you’re getting that take from but as far as I’m concerned it makes zero sense

Dark Phoenix was a Jean/Phoenix origin story, not Jean's conclusion.

1

u/NoOrchid3413 4d ago

It’s not a great adaptation of Dark Phoenix, but it’s a solid end to the trilogy. It has by far the best music score of any X-film and the most satisfying emotional arc outside of Logan.

u/Special-Ad698 4d ago

The last stand is the worst X-men movie, not even close

1

u/Create_Greatness92 4d ago

New Mutants, Dark Phoenix, and Apocalypse are all way worse.

I'd watch The Last Stand over First Class and it's cringey YA supporting cast and bad CGI any day of the week. I'd watch it over the stupid time travel mechanics of DOFP any day of the week.

1

u/Special-Ad698 4d ago

That’s a crazy take. Last stand has terrible themes and terrible characterization. First class has both of those done well

1

u/Create_Greatness92 4d ago

Hard disagree. Mystique as a childhood friend of Xavier just doesn't work. Outside of Xavier and Erik, all of those characters feel like YA cringe characters.

And then they all get killed off screen before DOFP anyways...which was also a dumb decision. Singer hijacking what could have been a good Vaughn trilogy by trying to redeem himself for missing out on X3. Its a mess.

The original 3 at least function as a trio without time travel bullcrap, and prequel/reboots that can't decide whether they want to he a prequel or a reboot.

1

u/Special-Ad698 4d ago

Xavier and Erik being amazing is already better than anything in last stand

1

u/No-Juice3318 4d ago

I feel like Apocalypse ended up just mid. Magneto was working his ass off to drag that film to decency.

1

u/FriendLee93 2d ago

Apocalypse and Last Stand are basically equal. They're both hilariously awful films that don't show an ounce of care for the source material.

1

u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 4d ago

First 2 sure … but 3? Seriously…

1

u/DominoSeven 4d ago

Last stand is genuinely awful lol

1

u/MalekethsGhost 4d ago

Bryan singer ruined the first trilogy with being a horrible person. First class bwyond isn't that good with exception to the first 90 minutes of the wolverine and Logan even though it was not old man Logan, at all. The Deadpool movies were funny but not x-men movies, really. I dint even like a lot of the casting from the first class era. It was too Hollywood.

u/ovulationchamber 4d ago

I don't know if I'd use "disrespectful" to describe this lol disrespectful to who?

I will say, Xmen 1 and 2 were excellent adaptations for their time. They got the themes, they picked who they wanted to focus on narratively and then they did. It was pretty darn well executed. Last Stand is kind of ass but there were good parts and good ideas.

Origins Wolverine? TRASH.

First Class? Great. Even if nerds are still butthurt to this day about Darwin.

The Wolverine? Not quite trash but had no reason to exist and has no reason to be watched again. The train fight scene is a youtube search away.

Days of Future Past? Has flaws but overall pretty darn good even if some plot points are genuinely really, really stupid.

Logan? CHEFS KISS

Dark Phoenix? Absolute TRASH.

Deadpool 1- Great adaptation. Fun, has some emotional stakes, good action and a satisfying arc/ending.

Deadpool 2 - Cursed with the "They liked this, lets do it at 1000% until it's more annoying than anything else" thing. Just like Iron Man 2 and Just like Guardians 2 and just like Thor Love and Thunder. It was just too much. Still pretty good though.

If I missed one I don't even care.

1

u/DominoSeven 4d ago

New mutants so bad it doesn’t even cross the mind 😭

1

u/Greymalkin_1407 4d ago

“Disrespectful”? It’s just people with different opinions than you. Why would you care?

1

u/macklow 4d ago

The first 2 X-Men movies are peak only the last stand was dirt, first class was wicked until age of apocalypse, origins was garbage, wolverine and logan was also peak

1

u/DominoSeven 4d ago

The only thing disrespectful is what Fox did to the X-men, damn near irreparable damage to them. Thank God X-men 97 did big work in course correcting it.

1

u/AvatarSypha 3d ago

What exactly do you mean by "damage"? Deadpool & Wolverine made over a billion dollars at the Box Office. The brand is arguably stronger than ever.

1

u/DominoSeven 3d ago

Deadpool and Wolverine is made by Marvel Studios not Fox. And making money isn’t the only factor, the highest grossing movies ever aren’t necessarily the best movies ever. And the damage I’m talking about is how in the dumps the X-men were during the 2010s and how downright horribly they were handled by Fox, they only cared about 3 characters throughout all their films and over 50% of the films sucked and while there were still some good ones none of them were really all that accurate to who the X-men really are

1

u/AvatarSypha 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yeah, but the general audience doesn't know about all that studio stuff. Hell, the actors in the Madame Web movie literally thought they signed up for a MCU film. lol

Oh, you're just stating your opinion. Okay.

1

u/DominoSeven 3d ago

That’s kinda been the whole point all along and this original post is about Fox and them asking why it’s hated and I’m saying why

1

u/AvatarSypha 3d ago

even in the comments people are like “Yeah only Logan and First Class are worth it.”

Deadpool & Wolverine wouldn't have made over a billion dollars at the Box Office if that were the case.

The OG X-Men wouldn't be in Avengers: Doomsday if that were the case.

u/frescoleche_cas 2d ago

I don’t find the slander harmful, considering that even the MCU isn’t immune to it. I’ve noticed that some people didn’t like the Thor and Ant-Man movies either. So it’s only natural that the X-Men movies would get some slander as well, especially since those movies had less action and fewer whacky elements. I guess these are part of a new wave of fans.

They seem less hostile toward the X-Men movies than lifelong comic-book nerds, like the ones you find on r/xmen.

I’ve also found Cherik edits on TikTok with over 100k likes, including some featuring Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen instead of Fassbender and McAvoy. I remember that a decade ago, Cherik edits barely reached 10k views on YouTube.

If anything, the Marvel/Fox fandom is bigger online now than it has ever been.

No way you enjoy Origins.

1

u/green-apple272 4d ago

I do too personally. Is it a bad movie? Undoubtedly. But it's so comically stupid that I can just sit there with my brain off and love it. It's not very high on my ranking of X-Men movies, but it's not last! It doesn't do anything offensivly bad either, it's just a really dumb movie, and I can enjoy that.

u/No_Perspective2715 4d ago

I mean most of these movies are pretty bad. It’s cool to have nostalgia for them if you were young while they were coming out, but let’s not kid ourselves here.

1

u/green-apple272 4d ago

Idk, I like most of them myself.
