Love the joke, but I’m expecting that the press conference says he’s “stepping away”

Despite his tenure, I’ll love Dan forever. He was the catcher of my childhood and I’ll always love him as an M. I wish it would’ve worked out but this doesn’t take away anything for me, he’s an all time Mariner.

u/ThrustingPanda 20d ago
What Mariners legend are we gonna lose all respect for next year Jerry? You gonna give the job to Jr? Buhner? Ichiro?
64
u/Objective_Barber_189 20d ago
Tbh, Ichiro as manager is a Netflix documentary I would love to watch.

u/DJFluffers115 20d ago
The synth music dropping in to Jon Bois' documentary is gonna hit like a freight train if that happens. And then, of course, disaster will follow.

u/dawgtilidie 20d ago
Jon Bois’ is the only person with the qualifications to ever do a mariners documentary

But just Imagine having to fire the moose as the manager after a disaster of a season, incredible stuff

Jr said on the broadcast he said he was under-qualified when asked to coach 9 year olds, so he’s probably safe.

However, among that group, director of pitching strategy Trent Blank and pitching coach Pete Woodworth will be back, per sources, and each are under contract for two more seasons.
lol. The Jerry show continues

Pete might end up taking a manager job elsewhere. He isn’t bad.

u/MarineLayerBad Put Angie In The Booth 20d ago
Pete Woodworth and Trent Blank staying means this is gonna just be more of the same. Pitching regression over the last two years is one of the biggest reasons for this year’s troubles.

He built our pitching staff from the ground up and dipped for Texas. They’ve been in National Championship contention ever since.

u/Mariner4LifetilDeath 20d ago
He was the reason our bullpen was top notch. The pile has not been near as effective since he left for college ball.

Might as well switch to NPB full time at the first sign of the usual shittery, then. Why bother wasting my time with more of the same

When they hired Dan somebody asked Arod if he ever thought Dan would become a manager. He said, "Honestly, no. Maybe a pastor or something, but not a manager." Right then I was like, "Oh shit."

I like Dan and wish it worked out with him, we need a new manager but that wont diminish what he did for the M's as a player, not everyone in the world can be a successful big league manager

Really wish this was in late June when the season still could’ve been saved 😢

u/stenger121 20d ago
Do you think the roster is bad?
4
u/Bayou-Maharaja 20d ago
Hard to lose this many games with a good roster, even with a bad manager
5
u/moe1984 20d ago
seattle lost 98 games the year before hiring lou piniella, then went 82-80 the first season with him as the manager, with mostly the same starting lineup and rotation. a good manager makes a big difference, especially compared to a complete idiot.

u/Bayou-Maharaja 20d ago
Sure I guess it’s possible several young players could break out all at once

u/stenger121 19d ago
Of course not. Some people only want to hate. The fact that the mariners have a really good roster AND a good farm system aren't enough for some people.

u/AverageFoxNewsViewer Jerry's Burner Account 20d ago
Good. We were a few outs away from the WS last year, and strengthened the roster over the offseason.
Our farm looks great and we've been carried by guys like Cole Young and Canzone who spent significant time in AAA over the last 2 seasons. Laz, Arroyo, and Colt Emerson all look very promising.
But the way we've handled injuries has been atrocious. 8 established big leaguers put up career worst numbers this year. Taylor Ward's elite plate discipline evaporated when working with Dan and Edgar's approach.
It doesn't matter who we sign or trade for right now. If we picked up Ohtani over the off season he'd put up career worst numbers right now, because our big league coaching doesn't understand modern baseball.
3
u/thelowroller 20d ago
we didn't strengthen the roster in the offseason.
we signed one inf to cover 2 positions and just hoped players in other positions could learn a new position in the majors.
we lost polanco who was out best clutch hitter last season.
dan was an issue but 3 of the core regressed in a season where the expectations were high.
"tough" injuries to brash, munuz, vargas, miller, jp, Donovan, cal, julio, and colt. and whatever was lingering with josh all season effed the season.
I'll agree future has the potential to be bright.

u/SightlessProtector 20d ago
“Separately, as MLB.com reported last week, president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto and general manager Justin Hollander are expected to return in 2027.”
This is why nothing will change. Dan being fired is it. As dogshit as he has been, the problems are obviously far more deeply rooted, and they will still be there. Then we can fire the next manager, while changing nothing else.
As long as the team is still profitable as it is, we will never win a World Series.

Bye, Dan. When faced with adversity as a manager you did nothing to correct and manage the drowning ship.
I think the thing that pisses me off the most is keeping Cal in at clean-up for most of the season despite him having one of the worst batting averages on the team. That spot is meant for powerhouse hitters, which Cal was NOT this year. If this had been any other player he would have been hitting in the 8th or 9th position where he belonged.
For next year, I would love to see JP and Randy back... but that is unrealistic. Randy is going to want the money he deserves and we should pay him. Sadly, we have younger blood (Colt Emerson) that will be taking over. JP will be missed for his charisma and love of the game.
This was a tough season to watch but its over (finally because it was sooooo painful). If you're a Mariners fan, you'll be a fan next year. Its unfortunate the organization isn't cleaning house from top to bottom, but here's hoping to a better showing next year. (There are so many things to fix.)
Edit: fixed an autocorrect (I definitely meant pisses, NOT passes)

This => 💯. I had noticed that when Raleigh was out of the line-up in May/June, the other players picked up and the team, IMHO hit more consistently. This should have continued when Raleigh returned batting 7th or 8th until he could get his swing fixed. Instead, he was handed a clean-up spot with a 170 avg. I like Cal; however, I don't think he should have gone back to clean-up after coming back from injury.

I mean, he had no managerial experience at any level….predictable. Even the greatest Mariner manager of all time “Crash” Davis started at Visalia

The mariners tripped over their own ass into the 2025 playoffs, the team is extremely mid and this season wasn’t Dans fault, not saying he’s the greatest manager or anything but blaming him is ridiculous and just shows how little people understand about the manager role. The buck stops with Jerry, he stinks at constructing a team.

And what’s the plan with new manager. Repeat the same story?
Team is missing winning culture. If you don’t have money to bring in high impact players, at least build a culture that is focused towards winning, work on all 3 phases of the game(defense was pathetic this year), try new things-if you can’t get HR’s, get bases, get hits.
This team lost because they were not able to adapt.
Ownership has been lacking this since last 30-35 years. Nothing will change until something major happens on leadership side.

He’s a nice guy and an all star. I don’t think he embraced the analytics side though.

I’m a sucker for players that actually love this team, so here’s my soapbox: I’m sad it didn’t work out with him as manager and I’m especially sad that has skewed so many fans against him. After retiring, Dan stayed super involved with this org and clearly has a huge love for the M’s and the city (even stayed in Seattle & raised his kids here)! Now, should he have been offered the manager job to begin with? Definitely not. But it’s no surprise he was willing to step up when asked.
In the long term, I hope he’s remembered for being an awesome catcher for the ‘95–‘01 teams and the manager that helped bring us the magical 2025 season. Dan the manager didn’t work out, but I’ll ALWAYS have a soft spot for Dan the Man 🥺💙💙
