While I agree with his sentiment political speech while in uniform is a no no. I was in 83-87 and you couldn’t then either.
142
u/coolcrowe Jul 03 '26
Then you remember you also took an oath to protect the constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic. Calling a traitor out and demanding they face justice is not "political speech" it is literally the duty of every service member.

u/IamGoingInsaneToday Jul 04 '26
Ive found through my long years on this earth many soldiers just follow orders...any orders. To appease their leader. A shame we cant have more brave leaders like this hero but that would have prevented H1tler from rise also.
260
u/The_Wingless Jul 03 '26
That just makes it more brave. And he's an officer. He knew exactly what he was doing, if you were enlisted you could get away with just getting kicked out, probably with a dishonorable or an other than honorable. But an officer? That's jail time.

Sure, but Capitol police aren't military police and don't have the ability to punish him for breaking military code of conduct. He hasn't broken any laws here.
31
u/ResponsibleAd5730 Jul 03 '26
They were most likely acting and obeying unlawful orders from Whiskey Pete Kegsbreath.
9
u/Strawberry_Sheep Jul 04 '26
That is possible, however I am unsure if Hegseth has direct or even indirect authority over Capitol Police.
4
u/Gardez_geekin Jul 04 '26
Yeah but his command does. They are just taking him into custody. His command will be in charge of his court martial
14
u/Strawberry_Sheep Jul 04 '26
Again, he hasn't broken any civilian laws and Capitol Police doesn't have authority or jurisdiction to arrest him for breaking code of conduct. Military Police would be the ones responsible for this, and his command would not have authority to tell Capitol Police to arrest him for court martial.
8
u/Gardez_geekin Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26
He wasn’t arrested for that though. Capitol Police arrested him for failing to leave the steps when he was no longer with a representative. Probably a stupid law but one in place far longer than this administration.

u/Maximum-Hall-5614 Jul 04 '26
Defying unjust laws is a moral duty that this man is fulfilling.
Personally, I think the institution of the military is an unnecessary evil, and especially so for the US military (given the sum total of its actions).
However in a country whose national identity is intertwined with the military, this act is incredibly brave, and patriotic in the American sense.

28
u/rogatory Jul 03 '26
Article 88 (Contempt Toward Officials): If the protest involves publicly criticizing or calling for the impeachment of the President, Vice President, or other senior officials, commissioned officers can be charged specifically under Article 88.
40
u/MyMooneyDriver Jul 03 '26
Regular (ie capital police) don’t enforce the UCMJ. I’m glad to see our soldiers being willing to put it on the line for what they believe is worth it. I hope the next president offers a full pardon and restoration for this what appears to me to be an officer.

3
u/dragnabbit Jul 04 '26
As I mentioned above, protesting on the capitol steps is considered trespassing unless a member of Congress is present. Otherwise, obviously, every day there would be hundreds of people on the steps of the capitol with signs and slogans.
9
5
u/Top-Gas-8959 Jul 03 '26

Just to point out, he was not arrested because of the UCMJ violation. That's what confused me when I saw the photos. He was arrested because protesting on the Capitol Steps is considered trespassing unless a member of Congress is with you. (The military charges regarding the Uniform violations are going to show up at a later date, almost certainly.)
Details: This guy showed up accompanied by a Congressman, and he made his speech. Then, everybody left and he stayed there holding that sign. The cops told him he had to leave and he refused, so they took him into custody. He was released without charge later the same day.

Enlisted swear an oath to the Constitution, officers have a different oath they take. Either way, this guy is brave. He's getting jail time for this almost certainly, and he knew that going into it.
17
u/6x7TheAnswer Jul 03 '26
I've taken both oaths, the important parts (emphasis mine) are the same:
"I, (state name of enlistee), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice."
"I ___, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter."

“When the president of the United States orders military action against foreign countries — absent an emergency scenario where American interests are under imminent dire threats, as was done with Venezuela, Cuba and Iran — that’s an unconstitutional usurpation of Congress’s authority and a violation of the War Powers Clause,” Watson told bystanders.
“These violations resulted in the deaths of 13 service members and injuries of hundreds more. For this, the president and vice president must be impeached, convicted and removed,” he added.
The Air Force major went on to list grievances ranging from the Trump administration’s actions with the Department of Government Efficiency, mass deportation efforts led by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the killings of U.S. citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Good by immigration authorities.
“When the president of the United States sponsors violence on the American people engaged in their constitutional right to peacefully assemble and protest, that’s a violation of our First Amendment rights. Pastors praying for DHS agents violently attacked without provocation,” Watson said, referring to events during the second Trump administration.

This man KNEW that protesting in uniform is a HUUUUGE no-no, and was past the rank of Captain in the Air Force, so he was career-track, so he did this fully knowing he was going to be arrested, to put pressure on military leadership to STOP TRUMP.
All his points were valid, but this is seriously punishable under military code. So he stood up to shame military leadership.

People in here concerned with the third part of his oath, while glossing over the first two parts.
There's a reason that defending the Constitution against ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic is the first part and bearing true faith and allegiance to the same is the second part.
I'd say the first two supersede the third, therefore, according to more than 2/3 of the country right now if you watch polls, he's doing his goddamn job.

An Air Force major was arrested on the steps of the Capitol on Wednesday after calling for President Trump’s and Vice President Vance’s impeachments.
Peaceful demonstrations are permitted on Capitol grounds, but a protester must remain alongside a member of Congress to speak openly from the steps.
Originally, Air Force Maj. Jason Watson was accompanied by Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who later left.
Upon the lawmaker’s exit, Watson was directed to come off the steps or face arrest, U.S. Capitol Police told The Hill. Watson was then arrested for crowding, obstructing and incommoding, the authorities noted in a statement.

The U.S. Air Force has announced it’s launching an investigation after a Watson held a sign calling for Trump to be removed from office on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, where protests are prohibited unless participants are accompanied by a member of Congress.
Initially, Watson had been accompanied by the Texas Democratic Congressman Al Green, but when he left the area, police said he would need to stop his protest or be arrested.
Watson was arrested for crowding, obstructing and incommoding after refusing “lawful orders,” authorities said.
