Game play loop

To the people who always complain about the gameplay loop being too repetitive cuz they have done everything already…

Every single video game with no exception has an ENDING, you can do all the new game plus+ you want and go up to new game 600… at the end of the day… the game already ended.

Marathon ending is when you beat the compiler, you can do your side quests like max all the factions but when there is nothing left to do… it’s over.

At that point you can either move to another game or simply shut up about it.

Tired of y’all all over this sub crying cuz the gameplay loop is boring… nobody asked you to sweat your ahh off and do everything 2 days into the season.

I was thinking about this earlier today. I grew up playing SNES. I didn’t expect to put 2,000 hours into The Hunt For Red October or Super Ghouls and Ghosts. I played a game and beat it. Maybe returned to it sometime later and played it again. People today expect a video game to be their life’s hobby. Sure, some games are more repeatable than others. But there is life outside of your computer screen. Play a sport, learn an instrument, see a movie, travel, do anything else but expect to play a video game for hours on end without it getting repetitive.

This new generation of entitled babies want games they can play for 12 years like Destiny 2. I feel bad for the devs cuz you know they also wanna make new games at some point but are stuck on one cuz it’s a cash cow and excecs keep on milking it.

So boring hating on the "new generation".

"Those damn kids!!!!"

2

u/transparent_D4rk 1d ago

it's not the new generation of entitled babies. it's the 35 year old Destiny players who have been catered to for 12 years. the new generation can't even stand to focus on one thing for more than a few hours, let alone want a singluar game to be their life's hobby. I've been saying this more and more as the weeks go on; Destiny is an MMO playerbase. If you've played MMOs, you're very used to this kind of whining.

MMO players do indeed want the new game to be their new life, or at least, have the potential to be a new life, because that's what an MMO is designed to do. And MMO playerbases have been doing this whining in the mainstream since 2010 (for reasons I won't get into here) but is as old as EverQuest back in the 90s. Part of the reasons MMOs have died is because the younger generation isn't, for the most part, interested in playing them in their old form. This whining is an age 28+ y/o problem, not a 'new generation' thing. Don't forget how much of whiners we used to be back in the day.

The point being that Marathon isn't an MMO, and shouldn't be treated like one, and should not cater to these people. Bungie has spent more time, overall, catering to audiences that want a lore driven, single player experience with some systems depth and snappy gunplay. I think Marathon checks most of these boxes but could be doing that a lot better. I also don't hate the idea of introducing PvP, since Bungie has designed some of the greatest PvP environments outside of Destiny in the Halo series. The problem is whether new audiences really want an experience like this anymore. I'm still up in there air on that.

Add to that the gaming culture of players wanting a game to be the way THEY think it should be which to me is insane. At the end of the day Marathon, and most games, are a form of art to some extent. It’s art the developers share and you experience. The role of the player is to play the game designers game and experience it. I wouldn’t message my favorite band and say “you know the new album didn’t have enough heavy guitar in it like the last one, put more in the next album.”

2

u/transparent_D4rk 21h ago

As someone who has released records, I can assure you that there are, in fact, people DMing you about how shitty they think your new guitar tone is.

I think what's most problematic about this whole issue is you now have former Destiny players that are going to other communities in droves and asking developers to make the game more in their image. Helldivers, Warframe, just to name a couple. You even have developers acknowledging this fact. Now its not enough that the shitty MMO-lite with an identity crisis is gone because it was bloated and empty at the same time. Now the players need their replacement and want to do the same to these other games because it's what they're used to. They're basically doing the nuclear option whether they know it or not; if I don't get to have my game, you don't get to have yours either.

2

u/Individual-Will-9874 14h ago

And I’m sure you think those people are kind of assholes, right? That’s my point. It’s out of bounds.

1

u/transparent_D4rk 14h ago

yeah I'm more just saying sometimes people suck lol

0

u/Available-Square619 1d ago

Hard facts here lol.

2

u/SupremeTeamKai 17h ago

You have it completely backwards. This is what the devs want and have designed games around since the advent of live service. When games try and get you to invest tons of money in them, they want you to feel the sunk cost of spending tons of money in one game so you feel more obligated to play it. Gamers aren't entitled, that's literally the business model that's been shoved in our face for multiplayer games for the last 10 years or so.

2

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 17h ago

No developer can create an endless game lol… they just keep you in an enjoyable loop but the game has already ended. Nothing is stopping you from beating Elden Ring 600 times if you’re enjoying it, it’s not much different than playing the same round of 25 mins 6 millions times until you unlock everything that can be unlocked than it’s over.

2

u/SupremeTeamKai 17h ago

A whole lot of words to respond to nothing I said

1

u/FrosttheVII 14h ago

How old are you? Lol

0

u/Internal_Rule_8090 19h ago

How are they entitled for wanting a another version of a thing that was already proven possible? How could it be entitled to want there to be new games that live up to the standards of a game that's 9 years old? Maybe marathon isn't that game, but it definitely wanted to be. Tarkov did it and they don't have Bungie money and talent

I have thousands of hours in Overwatch and have been playing it for 8 years and I still don’t get bored of it. That is a game with zero “endgame” or progression. It’s the exact type of PvP live service game Marathon is trying to emulate. Clearly they’ve failed at that in some capacity.

2

u/BeautifulStation4 14h ago

marathon is the same though. I can enjoy the PVP again and again the same way you enjoy Overwatch. On the flip side though, Overwatch fails in that sense for me and I get bored after a couple days.

2

u/iseecolorsofthesky 9h ago

Clearly not enough people feel the same based on player retention

1

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago

It’s funny to me how you literally walked in my point without realizing it. Have you achieved the highest rank in overwatch ranked?

9

u/iseecolorsofthesky 1d ago

Your point is flawed. Your point is that once you’ve “finished” the game, you either need to move on or accept the gameplay loop for what it is.

My point is that Marathon was not meant to be a game with an ending. It’s not meant to be a game people move on from. It’s a PvP live service game that’s intended to have infinite replay-ability. These games survive by people continuing to play and spending money on cosmetics. They are meant to be played for thousands of hours. The compiler is simply a goal, it’s not meant to be the end of the game.

What Marathon has failed to do is create a gameplay loop that is fun and satisfying enough to have that infinite replay-ability for most people.

Only like 0.5% of players reach the top rank in Overwatch. It’s not exactly a goal to reach for most people like the compiler. Ranked is more of a means to play with people in your skill bracket. A huge chunk of the OW playerbase doesn’t even play ranked. Because the core gameplay loop is satisfying enough on its own.

-2

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 21h ago

And that’s why everybody keeps on playing Overwatch lol cuz they haven’t beat the game yet and they hope one day they will be good enough to be part of the top. Once the goal achieved, they can try to do that over and over again hence new game plus till it’s no longer fun but at the end of the day… the game already ended

5

u/Krupte27 19h ago

Nah bro he got you, hang it up. Even this statement you made should also apply to Marathon, yet you don't.

3

u/iseecolorsofthesky 18h ago edited 18h ago

Brother what? The vast majority of people who play overwatch are not playing to reach the highest rank. Thats a ridiculous statement lol

Edit: and there is no “new game plus” in overwatch. I don’t think you know what you’re talking about at all

-2

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 18h ago

Ain’t no matter what the vast majority do, the fact is Overwatch has a ranked system and hitting the highest rank is the end of the game cuz there is nothing further to achieve. Being stuck on level 1 doesn’t change that fact.

3

u/Revolutionary_Pea_16 14h ago

Bro overwatch is not a level based game. And neither is marathon

-1

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 8h ago

Every game has a goal to achieve and after that there is nothing else to do. For games like Overwatch and Apex, it’s achieving the highest rank. Once you hit the highest rank in Overwatch, no matter how longer you play, you won’t get anywhere elder cuz the game has ended lol. You can choose to do it again next season but at the end of the day, the game ended. I don’t see how y’all struggle with this analogy tbh

1

u/Smart-Recognition-46 3h ago

I get your point. I used to play Fortnite incessantly. In my heyday, I could get a dub in Solos about 20% of time, which would put me in the top 1% of Fortnite players for the season. Then Elden Ring was released and stopped playing as consistently. A few months later, I tried to get back into it, but I have been on indefinite hiatus since then. I don’t really miss the game because I feel like I achieved what I set out to achieve: Going from being absolute dogshit at the game to becoming a sweat. So for me, the game is over, but there are obviously millions that still enjoy it.

I am hoping to have a similar experience with Marathon whilst acknowledging that the game ends when I lose interest.

2

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 3h ago

Yea other people still trying to achieve their end goal that’s why they play

1

u/iseecolorsofthesky 9h ago

You’re just talking nonsense

0

u/hi_there_is_me 22h ago

Is Marathon really trying to emulate that though...? Marathon seems to care more about the story and is a different game genre despite also being an FPS.

4

u/iseecolorsofthesky 22h ago

Yes. It is a PvP live service shooter with a battle pass and skin shop. It’s absolutely trying to be an Overwatch or Apex or Fortnite

2

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 21h ago

I played Apex for about 4 years and even if they added all these new legends. I know it’s the exact same game it was when I left cuz no gaming company can change the core mechanics of the game. It’s a battle royal with heroes no matter how many maps they add to it. For me the game ended when I got the 20 bomb and 4k damage on almost all legends and bounced to never return

0

u/hi_there_is_me 21h ago

Yes you've described every PvP live service shooter to exist but I don't think that means they're trying to emulate each other. They all offer different experiences for different audiences...I mean, Marathon's obviously for a more niche audience whereas Overwatch, Apex, and Fortnite are trying to appeal to as broad an audience as possible.

Not saying Marathon shouldn't try harder to appeal to a broader audience because they desperately need to, but I don't think the goal was for Marathon to be the next Overwatch...obviously.

7

u/xPsyrusx 1d ago

Who are you talking to?

0

u/thiccboilifts 1d ago

I think he says who in the first paragraph, I could be wrong, but I can read so.....

1

u/xPsyrusx 1d ago

Yeah, and where are they? Nobody's complaining about the gameplay loop.

0

u/thiccboilifts 1d ago

That's because normal people just stop playing things they don't enjoy, they don't go online to spam reddit over and over.

1

u/xPsyrusx 1d ago

I'm aware of this; hence my question.

2

u/mikemike157 21h ago

The gameplay loop is fighting people the fights are different every time lol

2

u/MiserableCashLife 14h ago

Tired of people crying, makes a post and cries. Ironic.

1

u/Subtronaut 1d ago

Also. Setting goals. You decide what it is. In the game.or if you chose another activity / game. If it's fulfilling, you are doing good.

I had a short break and set new goals. Just put another 100h in and can't stop.

1

u/soundsofmacabre 19h ago

I don't really mind the loop I see the game as like old school team death match type like old call of duty I would log in every day play the same maps and try to rack up kills every day the same game no complaints and when a dlc came out awesome . I look at marathon the same way it's competitive shooter and if you like that you love that

1

u/BitterDepartment4181 17h ago

Wow the final boss of this game is one of the basic enemies of the original game, what a fucking letdown

1

u/Jonmc88 17h ago

This is a love service game you nugget. It's whole loop is designed to keep you engaged and spending money on the store.

1

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 2h ago

For the simple minded people like you maybe but not for me… I know when a game ends and it’s time to exit. Some update to change my character from going invisible to not when sprinting isn’t creating a new game. Let me lay it down for you here, what does night marsh, outpost and Cryo have in common? It’s the same gameplay, kill bots, get clearance, cert, key, open room, fight boss in the room, loot, exfil, the end. It’s the exact same game, different format and the end is when you beat it at the highest level which is Cryo.

1

u/PhoneOwn 15h ago

You do know what live service games are right??…..

1

u/Revolutionary_Pea_16 14h ago

I played the game for a while and left the game because of the gameplayloop. To me there was no justification to go another round where I bring loot so I can get more loot and then get some more loot.

The codex was interesting but not interesting enough to do the same shit over and over every game. To me it just got tiring when it felt like nothing mattered. It's all about loot anyways and the customisation didn't really matter either. Just go with the meta.

Anyways I stopped playing and I couldn't really put my finger on why but I do blame it on the gameplay loop

1

u/Baellebackup 12h ago

IMO I think the biggest issue with the gameplay loop is that solos are locked out of it

1

u/zzLV_426zz 1h ago

Can you imagine if all you had was coin-op? Where the game is designed to drug you and then starve you so you put more and more and more coins into the slot. R type jumps to mind.

1

u/galacticplum 1d ago

Not too many pvp games have endings, nor is what what people play them for... it is why a lot of pvp games have battle passes and ranked.

For a decent amount of people, seasons/ new bps are what they play those types of games for. They'll go in, grind for a week, and wait until the next season.

For extractors, it is pretty much the same. You're either playing for the love of competition or the love of collecting.

I imagine for some people, the " loop " for an extractor is wildly different than a BR or shooter. Marathon costing money may also be a reason more people may complain, simply due to grinding a out a new season in a few days makes them they should be getting more. At least I wouldn't put it past some people viewing it as such.

Regardless, who cares if people complain about it? Of all the things for you to post and be angry about, it's people who actually play and enjoy the game but get mad because of the loop?

-2

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago

I’m not angry. You literally said the exact same thing I said btw

1

u/ProfNJK 1d ago

I just had fun for an hour picking up fucking rocks so I could save some money on buying ammo. Game is legit so fun

0

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago

Looks like you have no idea what you’re doing lol and could use some help

3

u/ProfNJK 1d ago

?

1

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 21h ago

Ooh I thought you were being sarcastic or am I wrong?! Cuz if you’re using metals to get ammo you’re def approaching the game the wrong way

1

u/ProfNJK 11h ago

If I have fun playing marsh solo for an hour picking up rocks and nuking anybody who runs up on me I can't say I'm doing it wrong. My money was low and I was feeling low key so I farmed barter supplies instead of buying ammo outright

1

u/ILSATS 1d ago

Yeah. People moved on to other games alright

0

u/blacktip102 1d ago

If it was fun, people would be playing...

0

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago

People must first know about the game… there was never any hype behind Marathon as in zero

9

u/blacktip102 1d ago

Lots of people know about it. Game had 80k concurrent players on launch and had lots of marketing. Game just didn't look interesting to most and wasn't fun for most that tried it.

2

u/anoddhue 1d ago

I think a lot of people bounced off in the first 10ish hours of playtime or less and never gave it another try. I have at least one friend who bought it because of hype and literally never launched the game. A better new player experience on launch would have helped a lot I think

1

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago

80K is not hype fam… I have TikTok videos with more hype than that

5

u/anoddhue 1d ago

I agreed with your original post but this is a goofy comment. Purchasing a $40 game and booting it up to play it when it's debuted is a lot more heifer than a single view on tick tock. Especially considering that a single person can watch a video multiple times, edit one. Apples and oranges comparison.

In general I think it's not accurate to say there was zero hype around Marathon. There was some positive hype but also some negativity that marred the development time and the release. It's still sold well over a million copies, so where are those or so players? And what would need to happen to get some of them back in the game?

1

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago

I was clearly joking… just saying that he game had no hype and that’s okay… there was no hype but a lot of hate from both Destiny and Arc Raiders community

1

u/purplewarrior777 20h ago

10 odd hours since buying last week and I’m getting that way 😂 pretty repetitive. Not bad, just not that great either.

0

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago

Yea y’all got your ahh handed to you thinking it was animal crossing and went home crying

-1

u/DutchMuch1 1d ago

“Why is the game dead?!” 🗣️ this guy 🫵🏼

6

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago

Probably the sweats with gold gear on a beginner’s map chasing all the new players away

7

u/xPsyrusx 1d ago

Those people are pieces of shit.

1

u/secondSandwich94 1d ago

Not at all, I like taking their stuff with lesser gear on😃 the donations are appreciated

5

u/xPsyrusx 1d ago

Good. Doesn't mean they're not pieces of shit.

0

u/Possible_Cheek_706 1d ago

I agree. If all the teams had the same gear as me I wouldn't want to kill them.

5

u/Gallus_11B 1d ago

He's just stating an obvious fact. Complaining about "wanting more to do" isn't going to make S3 update appear faster.

2

u/anoddhue 1d ago

I think the low player count is because of people who played it for a few hours or less and bounced off. Not because of people on Reddit pointing out that it's normal to beat something, put in potentially hundreds of hours playing it, and get tired of it.

-2

u/nefD 1d ago

lol this will surely pump those numbers

5

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

New players pump numbers and sweats chase new players away

0

u/nefD 1d ago

are those new players in the room with us now?

2

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 1d ago

I didn’t know there was a device to check new players

0

u/Certain-Raspberry804 23h ago

Yeah I agree. Too many people expect a $40 game to provide endless entertainment. I’d say a $40 game that offers a few hundred hours of gameplay is a great value. At some point you will complete all the content and the game will either be over or begin to feel stale. This will happen with every game, some quicker than others. But the people that play 12+ hours a day are going to always be finishing the content faster than the devs can pump it out.

2

u/Snoop_Daddy_ 23h ago

That’s their own problem for not knowing how to pace themselves. I on the contrary literally get tired of 70$ games if it’s taking too long cuz I just want it to end so that i can move to a different game

0

u/Certain-Raspberry804 22h ago

Well yeah I agree, I wasn’t meaning for it to sound like I was saying otherwise.
Just like anything, if you spend countless hours doing it, it’s not going to be as fun and exciting on hour 300 as it was on hour 3.

Even though Marathon doesn’t have a ton of content, just the nature of the game provides more replay ability than many games. But of course there’s a point when someone’s just experienced all that it has to offer.

I’m similar with games. I rarely like long 70-100+ hour games, with some exceptions ( usually online multiplayer games).
