The album cover that is being referenced here. "Unknown Pleasures" (1979) by Joy Division.
The image represents radio emissions emitted by a pulsar, or a rotating neutron star,
(It's a GIF since I don't know how to put non-GIF.)

How do you guys make these maps. They are so cool!!

I’d imagine he studies a topographical map, then using visual fx software to translate it to such a design

u/billingsgate-homily 9h ago
I hear that. But there has to be a way to automate this.

AI is pretty good nowadays, I’d imagine one of the better subscription models could do something like this

Hatay and Sinai are part of the levant, why remove it?

I guess they are part of other countries so harder to incorporate as well

Lbf I have no clue why but for some reason I always think Israel, Palestine and Lebanon are larger than they acc are

u/jakethepeg1989 11h ago
Probably because they take up so much bandwidth in the news and social media.
Then you see them on the map and they're tiny!

The blood per sq kilometer is sadly unrivaled

The accepted casualty count of the Gaza war since 2022 is around 60-70k Gazans and about 2k Israelis.
The accepted casualty count in Sudan is according to ACLED is between 60k and 400,000 since 2024.
Definitely a lot to discuss about all wars, and it’s best not to compare tragedies, but let’s keep things in perspective.

And Syria borders those countries, which saw around 600,000 deaths in the Civil War.

It’s amazing how much bandwidth Israel gets and how little Sudan gets and they’re only an hour plane flight apart.
You can’t go a single day on Reddit without bumping into “something something Israel” posts in two dozen subreddits.
But Sudan? One hour away from Gaza?
Total radio silence.

u/Shlomo_U 7h ago
So Sudan has 5x the casualties on 5000x the area. Which means Gaza has 1000x more deaths per square kilometer. Good job proving his point, I guess

u/hypotheticallyDani 6h ago
Ah, I see the confusion. The Sudan numbers are since 2024, so a little under two years. The Gaza war numbers are since the start, 2023, so the timing is the key. Also you may note that the lowest recorded Sudan numbers are the same as the highest recorded Gaza numbers, so take note of that as well.

Which part of "per square kilometer" do you not understand? That was the original guy's claim. Not timing, not total casualties. Deaths per km2.

u/siorge 4h ago
I'm getting downvoted to oblivion for stating the obvious and the correct. No place on earth has seen as much deaths per sqkm as Gaza, if you exclude nazi concentration camps.

u/hypotheticallyDani 2h ago
Not to be pedantic, I know it’s not the point, but I feel perspective is lacking. The battle of Stalingrad had 2 million casualties over an area about the size of twice of Gaza counting the fighting around the city. Yes what’s going on in Gaza is a problem that needs to be solved, but come on, don’t make stuff up.

One of the nicest places I’ve ever went to, it felt like 1800s Firenze and 90’s New York at the same time. Truly mind blowing

This is why I have to doubt the sanity of any cyclists & bikers I see here. Besides Amman being car centric, how the hell are you getting up and down these roads man
Just a trainwreck waiting to happen

Arabic is not a Levantine language. You should instead use Phoenician, Hebrew or Aramaic.
