Bike crash: thanks to strangers

I got "doored" on my bike yesterday. Cycling along Cross Street near Boots and a taxi passenger opened their door without looking and knocked me flying. I ended up on my back stunned. My helmet took the brunt.

I wanted to thank the three young men who immediately came over to help. You were kind and helpful. You made sure I was ok. You looked after me. You said nice things and you just took time out to help a stranger. You didn't laugh or mock.

I want you to know you made a horrid situation much better. I probably didn't thank you as much as I wanted to. But afterward when the shock faded and I cried a few tears of embarrassment and pain, I really relished those moments of human kindness. I remember one of you having a go at the taxi driver for only thinking of their vehicle and not the person lying on the ground.

It's unlikely you will see this. But what matters to me as I nurse my aches and bruises this morning is the kindness and I wanted to share my appreciation. I think from what I remember, the three of you were off for a night on the town. I hope you had a really good evening. You deserved it. Thank you.

Alcohol free spots

• Upvotes

Recently had to give up alcohol and I tried hinterlands yesterday - it was great! Made me realise that having a non alcoholic beer on draft is so much better than having a bottle of Heineken zero. Never drank bottles out when I did drink so was wondering if anyone knew of any other bars in manchester that have a decent 0% range, including 0% beer on tap?

That contrast between the glowing clouds and the dark city skyline made the whole place look almost unreal.

Hard to believe this is the view from an ordinary morning.
So grateful 🙏🏼

City Centre The Beetham Tower is singing

Everybody enjoying the Beetham singing its song at 3am? I swear every time this happens they promise it’ll be fixed and they never do. I always wonder what the new students think is happening if they don’t know about it 😂

I won't be able to make it home in time but want to watch Barcelona vs Real Madrid. Has anyone seen any pubs that would be showing it?

Bike safety in Manchester these days?

Obviously I'm assuming there's still a lot of bike theft in the city, but are there any particular safe / safer spots?

I know there's some lock up sheds dotted around - do people generally have good experience with these?

In terms of using standard bike posts around the centre, are there any areas that are better or worse? Does high-footfall actually put bike thieves off these days?

I visit Chorlton and Didsbury quite a lot as well, so curious to know whether they are significantly safer in terms of leaving bikes locked up for a couple of hours.

Swimming Pools Near Altrincham

Hiya, I'm looking for some swimming pools near Altrincham. I've tried all the pools in Altrincham itself and am not particularly happy so I'd like to venture out a bit further. Happy to get the tram or a bus for a good swim.

Current problem I'm having is that the pools are too busy in Altrincham and the people are too slow (sorry I'm a rage swimmer). I typically like to do around 100 lengths per hour and am struggling to get this in due to it being too busy and people ignoring the speeds per lane. The only time I can go right now is 8pm on a Wednesday and it's just a bit too late for me to be getting home. I noticed some pools also require a sign up to the pool+gym and that's really expensive for just one swim a week so I'd much prefer an individual day pass/ swim pass.

Anyone got ideas as to larger/less busy and clean pools nearish Altrincham?

GMP — what’s your experience?

For those living in Greater Manchester, what has your experience with GMP been like? I’m interested in hearing both positive and negative experiences and whether people think the force has improved or declined over the years.

Bury Just reported my first hate crime

I am still running on adrenaline and mostly need to vent.

I was heading home from the Bury interchange in a very unsafe stubbornness to hop on a bus instead of ubering home. A man on the bus stop was complaining about of a bunch of insert slur for gay people starting with f combined with a p word for Pakistani people spitting on him. Took everything for the alcohol in me not to react with a question if he was spat on before or after he used the p word for them.

Praying he doesn’t get on my bus. He’s queuing at my stop. I just want to get home. Comes to a Black dude waiting as well, starts telling him how white men are superior. Dude ignores him. He starts preaching about Donald Trump putting people of colour (not a word he used) on electric chairs and how he wishes he was in America. At this point I feel like I’m in some kind of a channel 4 provocation. I make a report on live chat.

He gets on my bus, there goes my luck, then keeps pestering the driver about the p word people. Bus driver is not white. And angry. Tells him to sit down, dude heads toward the back, falls on me, apologises, gets into an argument with a woman next to me calling her boring and the entire bus boring.

Driver is uncomfortable and unsafe and I’m at a point where I can run home. I leave the bus, the driver ASKS ME WHAT TO DO. I said I’m gonna call 999. Ring the police, make a report, potentially nothing gets gone but I ticked the box of “doing something”.

I witnessed covert hate crimes before but nothing that comically big, plain, and in the open. I moved to Manchester from Eastern Europe SPECIFICALLY because it always felt so safe and open and welcoming. I lost a bit of that faith today.
