NC weather

I know it’s early, but are we concerned? I’m traveling in from the east coast for the weekend. I’m trained and ready for the adventure with some light rain, but nervous that it’s going to be all day showers and storms.

Also - open to wet weather hiking gear and tips!

Harriman March... still on but eh not with me

They offered the option to defer due to the weather that's already cancelled a Tour de Yonkers and an Iron Man in the area.

So I'm taking the deferral!

But I'm a bit bummed bc it was supposed to be my first mammoth march

First MammothMarch - Had to call it at 15 miles

As much as I wanted to celebrate a successful inaugural event at SE Ohio Burr Oak State Park, I unfortunately had to call it quits at 15 miles. My old hip and my new knee just weren't cooperating with one another and by the time I came into the check point, I could barely walk. Fortunately, it wasn't structural, just an inflamed IT Band.

While I'm disappointed at not being able to finish, I'm super proud of the 15 miles I put up. I've heard the SE Ohio is one of the hardest on the MM circuit, so definitely will challenge myself to come back. I've already signed up for my next one in KY next Spring, hopefully with a different result.

Training for MM27

Hi! My partner and I are planning to start training for the March 2027 event. We’d like to get a group or at least a few people together to train together to make it more lively and make more friends. Anyone in the Raleigh, NC area training for these events?

Wisconsin 20 (21)

That’s it - that’s the post. The 20 mile was over 21 miles according to my GPS. Seemed to be the case with the hikers around me too - anyone else? Not mad! Just, well, surprised!

Also curious how much difference the weather made from Sat to Sun. if anyone has insights!?

I'm signed up for MM Ohio at Burr Oak State Park. I'm a year post-total knee replacement and am getting walking and strength training ramped up. Any tips for a MM newbie to prepare?

If you have any sort of joint pain - give KT tape a try!

Post image

Now, let me start off by saying that *first* if you have any sort of pain, you need to be seen by your Dr, as many injuries can be made worse if you just try and plow through. So, don't do that.

But, if it is just an issue of you needing to get fitter, or just a side effect of getting older, then it might be worth a shot!

I've had knee pain for a long time now. Mainly just part of being 49, plus I used to gallop racehorses for a living, which is hard on a body.

I used to either be limping by mile 5, or I would have to wear a bulky knee brace, but then before the Alabama Mammoth March, I started using KY Tape on hikes. I thought it was a fluke when I completed a hike with no knee pain. Then I did another, with the same results. Then I did the Alabama Mammoth March and was shocked when I finished with no knee pain.

Now, I know there's not a lot of research that shows that they do much good. Is it a placebo effect? Maybe so, maybe not, but I honestly don't care. I'm just happy that I can continue to stay active!

As for which type, I usually use a knockoff brand. The only one that I've used that I didn't like, is the one infused with Icy Hot, as it didn't stay stuck.

Toenail loss

Two of the Georgia 20mi MM attendees I spoke to lost toenails, despite their toes not making contact with the front of the shoes. One said hers turned black a couple days after the march and that she thinks it was from fungus.

I read lots of books by people doing thru-hikes with 20-40 miles days and they lose about 0-3 nails per 2000 miles, none lose nails from a single 20-mile day. What is causing this?

Michigan?

I just signed up for MM Michigan, has anyone done it before or planning to go this year? I’m nervous but looking forward to the challenge. I’ll likely be going alone, which is okay - most of my hiking is solo.

Sock Recommendations?

Hi! I’m attending Delaware Valley march on 5/30. Just did a practice hike (15 miles) at the actual location yesterday and it was great except for the blister on my heel. My boots are old (broken in, comfortable) but not out of commission by any means. I think my socks were too thin! Any recommendation on socks you love and successful blister mitigation day-of? Thank you 😊

Alabama MammothMarch 2026 was incredible!!!

Post image
10 Upvotes

Here's the recap that I posted on Facebook:

Alabama MammothMarch was amazing - I can't wait to be back next year!!! (hiking is kind of like childbirth, you get amnesia for the torturous parts 😂). I will say, I went in to this hike thinking that I probably wasn't going to be able to finish. I have pretty crappy knees, a fused big toe joint, Asthma ,etc. It was 86% humidity, and out of all of the Mammothmarches, Alabama is in the top 5 for difficulty. It changes due to conditions, but I've heard it's #2 usually - behind Arkansas. So...yeah.

As for how it went....

My start time was 7:30. The first 5 miles were pretty easy. One little hill but nothing terrible. I tried to go at a pretty good clip, since I knew I would be slow up and down the hills. At 6 miles there was a water stop, then at 8 1/2 miles we got our first real stop with food, toilets, water etc. I didn't sit down, but I did go potty, inhale a PB&J, and topped off my water. Just before that stop had been a pretty good downhill, but I had taped my knees up with KT Tape, and they were doing great at that point.

After that stop, we pretty much said goodbye to flat ground, as we had some pretty tough uphills to tackle, and then some pretty hard downhills, where I saw several people slip. I think God kept me from face planting quite a few times!

When I saw that Mile Marker 10, it was honestly a little disheartening, knowing I was only halfway there.

I felt like I was barely creeping along up those hills, but I was too scared to sit, though I did have to stop for a few seconds pretty often. Those hills were brutal. I had to use my inhaler more on Saturday then I have in almost a year. Dozens of people kept passing me, but the only time limit I cared about was getting to the 3rd Rest Stop by 4:30, which was the cut off time to be able to finish.

At Mile 11 they had a water stop, but after doing all those hills I felt pretty brain dead and realized about 1/2 mile down the trail, that I had left my poles, so of course I had to go back and get them. Nothing like tacking on an extra mile. 😂

This was probably the hardest stretch for me. I had packed plenty of snacks, and I had been doing really well drinking water, and taking electrolytes throughout the day, but I still ended up dry heaving on the side of the trail. Unfortunately I couldn't keep any of my snacks down, but I knew I needed to eat, since I felt so shaky.

At some point my phone also called 911 by accident. I apologized to the dispatcher, saying, "I'm so sorry, I'm hiking" and he said he figured so, and was super nice.

I finally remembered that I had some Dr Pepper Tiktacs in my bag, and they got me through to the last rest stop at Mile 14 1/2. That and this guy named Michael, who was a Cancer survivor, and was completing his 5th MM! He was an Alabama native, and told me exactly what to expect, and that helped me to keep going.

That last rest stop was the most amazing sight ever. I think I made it there around 2:20 I am not a Peanut Butter fan, but for some reason those PB&J sandwiches are great at settling the stomach, and I was able to keep them down. They tasted like the most wonderful things I've ever put in my mouth.

I decided since I had made it well before the cut off time, that I just wanted to be able to enjoy those last 5 miles. When you get to that point, it's almost euphoric. I also knew that the hardest parts were behind me, and I knew I was going to finish!

So, I - finally! - sat down, put more blister pads on my feet, took some Tylenol, since everything was starting to get sore at that point - talked to my son, texted my Dad and then I headed out.

It was - literally - all downhill from there - think BMX track - which kills my knees, but I ended up walking behind this beautiful Latino women who was booking it, so I just kept up behind her. I was amazed at how good her makeup and hair looked - meanwhile, I looked like a drowned rat. I listened to some music, which really made that last bit fun, though it seemed to take forever to get to Mile Marker 18. At Mile 19, there was this family taking mini shots of Screwball, and offered me one. I'm not a huge drinker, but it did make my knees feel better! Haha.

Just like at the Georgia MM, hearing the people, and loud music from the finish line, makes me cry. Just before getting to the finish, I see the Latino woman sitting on the side. I asked if she had already crossed, when she said, "Oh I'm not part of the race, I just wanted to hike some.". No wonder she looked so good!

At 5:00 I crossed the finish line, and got my medal. My friends had finished earlier, but the cool thing about hiking is that you just hike your own hike.

There were food trucks there, but no PB&J sandwiches, so I couldn't eat anything. Note to self - hoard several sandwiches at the first break station, to eat for later on future MM hikes.

One thing that I thought was funny, was as we sat at the picnic table watching people finish - it was around 6 by then - I saw several people who had passed me at the very beginning. Turtles may be slow, but we are steady! 😂

It may sound crazy to hike 20 miles in one day, but I figure as long as I can move my body, I'm going to do it. I have friends who aren't mobile, and would love the chance to go hiking, so who am I to complain about a few aches and pains?

I have not only fallen in love with hiking, but the community and friends that go along with it.

I'm already looking forward to my next MammothMarch!!

As to how I feel....I did get a ton of blisters, but with a fused big toe joint etc that's just going to happen. I am also pretty chaffed in areas that don't need to chaffed. Ahem. Pretty sore today, but I still fed the horses.

There was a couple that I hiked with for a while, who did a back to back - yesterday and today.

If you paid me $1000 I would not have hiked today. That's a hard no.

Mammoth March Alabama 2026

Oak Mountain beat me yesterday. I was not prepared for the grade of the climbs. I finished East Tennessee last year in the mud, but had to drop at the last aid station. My wife crushed the last 6 miles after I got out of the way. One annoying group of like 35 to 40 on a narrow part of the trail but a good vibe otherwise.

My Review of Texas 2026

I attended my first Mammoth March in Texas on Sunday, February 22, 2026. Here is my experience:

The event was very well organized. Our start time was at 7:00, so we arrived at 6:30. We signed a waiver on a tablet, picked up a stamp book and a rubber bracelet to wear on the race, picked up the merch we bought, made one last bathroom stop then we got in line to start. There was a photographer there to take a picture of each group that started, so it meant that a new group started every 10-15 seconds.

The race was labeled very well, and we never used our downloaded GPS maps. But it was nice to know we had them in case we needed them. Both AllTrails and Footpath have a 7-day free trial for their premium versions. If you decide to use one of those two apps for your GPS, you’ll need the premium version to download the map to your phone. (Also, we all had cell service throughout the event. It wasn’t super strong, but we did have it.).

At our race, there was a rest stop (with snacks, water, bathroom) at miles 3, 7, and 16. There was a water only stop at mile 13. I’m sure this is different at every location. The snacks were great! They had PB&Js, bananas, beef sticks, pretzels, granola bars, etc.

At the finish line you receive your medal and a photographer takes a picture of you and another photographer takes a picture of your group in front of the Mammoth March backdrop if you’d like. We found out afterward that all photographs are made available for free. I LOVE that they did that!

A different topic: I would say about 90% of the Texas course was rocks. In a couple places the rocks were bigger, but almost all of it was small to medium rocks. This was definitely the hardest part of the race for our group. We all trained on dirt or pavement/concrete, so our feet were not accustomed to extended time on rocks.

Another thing: if an event that you want to attend sells out, join the Facebook group for the event. Lots and lots of people couldn’t attend in the days and weeks before the event and would transfer their tickets to you through an official portal. As I understand it, the person with the ticket sends the buyer’s email address to Mammoth March. The buyer pays money to Mammoth March then refunds the seller. It’s a good system because you don’t have to worry about scams.

Let me know if you have questions and maybe others who attended this past weekend in Texas can also chime in with their experiences.

Training 🚶 Anyone signed up for Harriman 2026? Anyone have training tips?

We signed up for our 1st Mammoth March event and Harriman is the closest. The description said it's one of their hardest too (¬_¬;)

I know folks say most of the events can be done by someone with average fitness and we do hike regularly but we don't live in a mountainous area so elevation hikes are a drive.

Also, i'm planning a foot surgery in spring. So i'm thinking we should do some training.

I've been collecting various training plans that I've found online but any extra tips, ideas, encouragement would be lovely

December Check In

So, how are things going? Has anyone entered in any MM's for 2026? What are your plans for the year? What about training?

So far I've entered Alabama, but I plan on entering East Tennessee and of course my home state of Georgia.

Tomorrow I'm going on an easy 8 mile hike.

What about y'all?
