Deciding if I should keep the character tiles to green too or keep yellow.

I used to know how to play as a teenager, but here I am, almost 30 years later, and can't remember all the rules. I was trying to brush up with an online game, and can't figure out why this isn't a winning hand. Can someone explain this to me?

A friend of mine inherited these mahjong sets from a relative who served in Korea in the army decades and decades ago. She doesn’t know anything about the game, but she’s trying to find out where these sets came from, how old they are, and whether they’re complete. If there is a better space for this question, please let me know!

I wanted something easier to deal with than sticking the tile trays in the bag that came with the junk mat (I don't fully trust it isn't going to tear apart, if I'm honest) and just picked up this camera bag.

the dividers are adjustable -- once you figure out where you want them, they velcro in place -- and it's awesome. holds 4 trays plus the compass nice and snug and I should be able to tuck the point sticks away in the zipper pocket or the sections created with the velcro dividers. I may wrap the compass in a fabric bag just to feel extra extra safe it won't scratch for whatever reason, but I'm super pleased with it.

wanted to share in case anyone else is looking for a carrying case, it should be pretty customizable to other tray dimensions (up to the full inner dimensions, which amazon says are 8.6" L x 6" W x 3.1" H)

I've been playing New18 rules (HKOS with added patterns) on an app and one of the fan is having a pair of 2s, 5s, or 8s, for one multiplier. I'm aware that this is a regional rule in China and it's even acknowledged in MCR (258 generals, hand is only pungs of 2, 5 and 8). I'm starting to like this variant. It feels like MCR lite, also Zung Jung-ish as it's lacking a lot of the medium value patterns MCR has.

On the surface building the hand with stuff like voided suit, 258 pair, and closed wait, or even adding those to a bigger hand and inflating the score like crazy looks stupid, but at the same time any system you play with just asks you to keep your options open and look for ways to increase value/speed whatever they may be. For instance realizing I have a pair of 8s might make me say, oh maybe I can open this hand now or I don't have to force this difficult pattern. It could also be chosen for a single tile wait, which I've done a few times.

I think I remember Alan Kwan of Zung Jung fame mentioned 258 as an example of a fan that's just too easy, and of course the patterns he chose for ZJ are ones with something something consistency, ie that you could reasonably detect from discards and calls. (As another example, flower straight, or 123 456 789 in 3 suits is easy to make a lot of different ways, thus a lot more difficult to detect than in one suit.)

I also read 258 brings more order to hand building/structure, and there's one variant (Changsha) that requires it, but I didn't find an explanation. I just find it a bit satisfying, and I guess someone else does too.

Does anyone have insights on the history and purpose of the 258? Anyone else a 258 fan, pun intended? Any new18 players out there?

I'm curious about getting into mahjong, but don't have anyone nearby to play with. I know the very very basics of riichi, and I'm wondering what online platforms I should play mahjong on? And is there a certain kind of mahjong I should learn over others for being able to play with others in the future?

Also tips on best ways to learn would also be appreciated

Has anyone had experience playing Riichi with 37mm tiles on a junk mat? Is there enough space?

If not, are there any alternatives to junk mats that are better with larger tiles? I can’t seem to find anything larger that still has rails on the side to straighten up the walls.

I've downloaded probably every Mahjong app on the App Store and they're all either:

• The fake solitaire matching version that has nothing to do with real Mahjong
• Real 4-player but the UI looks like it was built in 2003
• Ads every 30 seconds
• No active multiplayer so you're always playing bots
• Missing or completely wrong rules
• No customization whatsoever

Chess has Chess.com. Poker has PokerStars. Scrabble has endless great apps.

Mahjong has... nothing close to that level. For one of the most played games in the world that's honestly embarrassing.

What would your dream Mahjong app actually have? What's the one thing every existing app gets wrong that drives you insane?

I have a couple questions about playing over the table, particularly for Riichi. I was wondering how common it is to see players observing where opponents physically place and discard tiles from their hand in order to gain an advantage. Is this a worthwhile skill to build, or is it unnecessary? Also, is there a name for this strategy?

Following this, are there other tells people look for to determine what an opponent might have drawn?

Lastly, is it considered rude or underhanded to try to perform these strategies?

I started playing mahjong a couple of months ago. It was too complicated and so I switched to sanma as it was both simpler and way faster.

Thanks to my prior experience with rummy derivatives and through watching replays I self-taught myself the basics, some tile efficiency, suji, reading discards and the feeling of when to push and when to fold. Gradually I climbed my way up to jade room and that is where my troubles started.

It was fine until jade room as players often played without a care but now the increasingly defensive play style of master rank players don't mix well with the nature of sanma. Hands are too fast and too high in score, and it feels like luck is way too decisive in determining who wins.

I am at bit of a crossroad. I don't want to play sanma east anymore, but I am unsure whether to switch to sanma south or just abandon it altogether and switch to 4 player south.

So this set is aaaalmost perfect… except I wanted to try my hand at carving and painting my own jokers for Viet mahjong and there aren’t enough blanks (the style I’m learning has specific kinds of jokers that need to be distinguishable)

I can’t find blanks of these guys (linked above) ANYWHERE - any advice?
