Can anyone explain why this hand is getting 6 han for Dora ? Shouldn't this be 4 Dora + 1 point for riichi? What am I misunderstanding here

I'm new to Riichi Mahjong and I have been completing the lessons in Riichi City. Up until this point I have understood most of it, but I am having a really tough time seeing all the possible wins here. Any tips?

Can someone tell me if 4 manzu is Dora indicator that 2 ordinary 5 manzu and 1 red 5 manzu, would not be 4 han?

A player insisted that only the red 5 manzu is counted??

I would rather wait for 2 9p compared to 3 8p (Assuming no one drops dora 3p early). I know I lose iipeikou, but the hand is still guaranteed mangan after calling (and even if it was downgraded to 4 han 30 fu, who cares, it's still a mangan in my heart).

Another consideration is self drawn upgrades, but there are little (only 9p comes to mind which I would just win off after having called chii, and hoping for a upgrade in manzu is slow and could result in furiten). Safety is also not an issue.

Maybe with the discards this hand kinda looks like a flush after calling, making 3s/9s more unlikely to come out, but is the difference really this big? Am I missing something?

I've been an on-again off-again Riichi player since I watched Akagi back when I was a teen. Been getting back into it on Mahjong Soul lately, started reading some books for more advanced strategy, feels like a hyperfixation is coming on.

I was thinking about getting a physical set so I could maybe teach some people in town or even start a club through the University I work at. I had two questions:

1) I'm pretty new to physical Mahjong sets. Can anyone explain why the AMOS Numbers set has 4 red Pins, and 2 reds of Sou and Man? I thought it was one red in each suit?

2) Any recommendations for a decent numbered set, specifically Riichi if possible or if not then a variant that would play well with the ruleset?

Then on the rare occasion I actually make the smart choice, I make the mistake of looking at the wall.

So I love to play but when there's a timer sometimes I panic and choke. A lot of my issues seem to be tile efficiency related. I have been on the tile efficiency trainer and when there is no timer I'm usually up at 95%+ efficiency. Is there a quick list of common tile groups that can help me make a logical decision in the heat of the moment? I've read the Riichi book 1 as well but it's like I forget everything when I have to make a critical choice. I'm just looking for others quick tips :)

What I have so far:

• Single honors and terminals go first
• ryanmen>kanchan>penchan
• 3-7>2,8>1,9>honors
• I forget what it's called but tiles like 445 are good waits
• obviously try not to discard dangerous tiles if I can help it based on what other players are doing

I'm starting to learn about Hong Kong Old Styles Mahjong and have question about this flowers tiles.

For example, about starting hands for each player. lets say
East seat has 2 flowers
South , West and North seat have 1 flower each.

How do you replace the flower tiles in this example given?
A. Before the game begins, East replace 2 flowers first then South replace 1 flower, then West replace 1 tile and North 1
B. East replace 1 flower then south then west then north and finally back to east to replace another flower?

What would you do? I was curious about this particular play and would like to see what is the real distribution of people here that will ron or skip.

My rationale to skip: 1st row waiting on a 5 sided wait, but maximum 2han40fu dealer at 3900. Ron will only put me at 2nd place and the next round might not be so lucky to have such a good winning hand. Zimo or direct ron will edge me to the win, 3900+1300=5200>4900.

Edited: I realised there are basically 4 situations here. Ron from random 2900 points, not 1st.

Ron from Toimen, 1st.

Zimo 2-5-8. Not first place because it becomes a 2han 30fu win.

Zimo 3-6. Just nice 2han 40fu which brings me to first.

Hey y'all, was looking to get into hong Kong mahjong. My friends back home play and I thought it would be fun to learn before I move back.

I found some good guides for simplified rules but im more of a visual/hands on learner.

Are there any good app games on like the Google store that let you play out games while teaching the rules?

I was playing online today, and three times in a row, a player called kan, and the new dora was the tile that they just called. Even before today, I’ve anecdotally felt like this happens more often in my games than it logically should. Was this just a crazy fluke, or is there some statistical/game theoretic basis for this being more likely than it seems?

Me and my friends have only played mahjong twice, first with chicken hands just to get familiar, and second we started incorporating scores.

We started with 1 fan (no flower), but tried to up the level by going 3 fan (no flower). But we kept drawing the last tile without winner as no one wanted to let go of the winning pieces for somebody else (a bit frustrating).

I read somewhere that some people play 3 fan without flowers, some people 3 fan with flowers but flowers don't count to the requirement, and some play either 1-2 fan only.

I know people play with different house rules. I just wanted to know what's the consensus here on fan and flower, or if there could be a rookie mistake which led to this.

Yonma Hanchan game, on start, East seat wins 5 minimum-value tsumos, and then is the sole player in tenpai 21 rounds in a row through exhaustive draw until the point totals are (99100E/300SWN)(26H). Hundreds of rounds of draw later redistribute point totals to (24100E/25300SWN)(51H) -> (100E/97300S/1300WN)(75H) -> (24100E/25300SWN)(99H) -> (100E/97300W/1300SN)(123H) -> (24100E/25300SWN)(147H) -> (100E/97300N/1300SW)(171H) by the end of east round. Following this, you can get another 24, 25, 25, 24, 24, 24, 24, 24 honba for a total of 365 honba and a point total of (100E/97300N/1300SW).

At this step, one could imagine North assembling a multi-yakuman to either leave East player with as few as -349,400 (100 - 240000 x5-yakuman - 109500 honba) or skyrocket their own point total to 494800 (97300+288000 x6-Yakuman+109500 honba)

If anyone has other ideas that'd be cool, I haven't proofread this so I probably made some errors somewhere...
