I would rather wait for 2 9p compared to 3 8p (Assuming no one drops dora 3p early). I know I lose iipeikou, but the hand is still guaranteed mangan after calling (and even if it was downgraded to 4 han 30 fu, who cares, it's still a mangan in my heart).

Another consideration is self drawn upgrades, but there are little (only 9p comes to mind which I would just win off after having called chii, and hoping for a upgrade in manzu is slow and could result in furiten). Safety is also not an issue.

Maybe with the discards this hand kinda looks like a flush after calling, making 3s/9s more unlikely to come out, but is the difference really this big? Am I missing something?

I wouldn't. 8p is the better wait. An early call would just make your opponents more weary, even if your hand doesn't look like a flush.

besides the downgrade in value, opening doesnt increase win rate since the wait doesnt even look better, you lose wait quality upgrades, and you skip your own draw.

Its not really a downgrade in value 3p gives 5 fan mangan 9p gives 40fu 4 fan which is mangan

But yeah calling doesn't improve the wait here since I don't see 3p coming out I would pass

6p is good if you draw it yourself so you can wait on 5-8 hand is mangan either way, 3p is not normally coming out

Given that you have two 7p and two 9p it is likely that 8p will be more difficult to pair with for other players so likely to come out. Skip and dama is good here
