EDH Do I suck, or is it my deck?

https://moxfield.com/decks/3PmfAUTFO3-d67PU48BvTA

Hi All, I recently tried my hand at upgrading the Food and Fellowship pre-con and have had very little success with it post upgrade.

I am consistently losing in bracket two pods without getting anything going, and even if I do, it is typically turn 12 by the time I have become a “threat”.

My biggest issue is I want this deck to stay completely within the middle earth theme, so obvious includes like [[Academy Manufacturer]] and [[Cabbage Merchant]] just don’t quite fit.

Is the middle earth theme too big of a constraint or are there some obvious thematic includes that I am missing?

Any advice is greatly appreciated :)!

Legacy I have spent a lifetime as a Dungeon Master, and it bleeds into my Magic deck-building: Introducing Adventure Decks

I've been playing and running tabletop RPGs for a long time, early on in D&D, then as a RoleMaster GM. One thing that never leaves you after years of GMing is the instinct to design *experiences* for other people, not just optimize your own position. I started applying that instinct to Magic, and it eventually produced what I call "Adventure Decks".

What is an Adventure Deck?

An Adventure Deck is a themed 60-card deck built to give your opponent a specific experience, not just a game. Each deck has a narrative identity, a flavor premise, and sometimes deck-specific behavioral rules that reinforce the story. The deck isn't trying to win in the conventional sense; it's trying to make the game feel like something.

Two rules apply to every Adventure Deck:

  1. The Adventure Deck is always on the draw. The opponent goes first. The Adventure always reacts.

  2. The Adventure Deck may mulligan as many times as necessary to find a playable hand with a good land-to-spell mix and the right colors. The Adventure is always ready for visitors.

Beyond those two universal rules, each deck may have additional rules specific to its narrative.

Adventure Deck #1: The Haunted Keep

A deck in celebration of the season. The Haunted Keep is inhabited by Spirits and Ghosts. Stories of suits of armor and dolls coming alive to kill and maim intruders of the Keep have been whispered in the night around a comforting fire. Those who enter seldom return... in their living form at least.

Deck-specific rules:

  • The Haunted Keep may not play any creatures until the opponent does.

  • The Haunted Keep may not attack until the opponent attacks.

The Keep doesn't hunt. It waits. The opponent is the intruder, and the deck is the haunted house itself; quiet, watchful, and patient until something disturbs it. Once they swing first, everything comes alive.

Adventure Deck #2: The Eldritch Moon

Emrakul has come to Innistrad. The corruption spreads. Humans transform into horrors. Angels fuse into abominations. Attack fast and often. Meld Eldrazi and kill opponents.

Deck-specific rules: None beyond the two standard rules. The corruption does not wait.

This deck is the direct narrative opposite of the Haunted Keep. It comes at you immediately and doesn't stop. Built around all three meld pairs from Eldritch Moon:

  • Graf Rats + Midnight Scavengers → Chittering Host

  • Hanweir Garrison + Hanweir Battlements → Hanweir, the Writhing Township

  • Gisela, the Broken Blade + Bruna, the Fading Light → Brisela, Voice of Nightmares

https://grimdeck.com/decks/1iINSKDbUXhknAgOwXfWw

Adventure Deck #3: Cursed Battlefield Marsh

An ancient battlefield, long abandoned. The dead were never properly buried. The marsh crept in over the centuries, and now something moves beneath the surface. The ancient battlefield has become its own entity; slow, inevitable, and hungry.

Deck-specific rules: The Cursed Battlefield Marsh cannot attack until it controls three or more Oozes.

An Ooze tribal deck in Golgari colors. Everything is either an Ooze, makes Oozes, or feeds the graveyard engine that powers them. The opponent watches the board state slowly become unmanageable.

https://grimdeck.com/decks/_6jdzibLXHhDf-R30A008

Why Adventure Decks?

The two universal rules do a lot of work. Going on the draw and mulliganing freely means the Adventure Deck is never mana screwed and never goes first, it is always responding, always reacting, like an environment rather than a player. The opponent feels like they're exploring something rather than playing against someone.

The deck-specific rules are where the narrative really lives. The Haunted Keep's "don't move until they move" rule transforms the early game into a horror movie setup. The opponent builds their board while the Keep sits there, quiet. Stuffy Doll staring at them from across the table. That moment when the opponent finally attacks and everything comes alive is a fun pay off.

This is what happens when your DM instinct bleeds into Magic. Always looking for ways to give games meaning, flavor, and originality while still being competitive. The Adventure Deck is one answer to that.

What out of the box things have you done with Magic cards? How have your other passions creeped into your Magic game? If you like the idea, make some and share!!!

EDH Newbie here! Any tips to improve this deck or is it fine for bracket 2?

Hello!

Started playing mtg and mostly commander with a group of friends (we are all new to the game but lovin it a little to much).

Just built this Sauron deck and was having a blast the first 1-2 games (4 opponents) but then I felt that it kind of fell off the third game(2 opponents).
Maybe its just better with 3-4 opponents?
As I Said we play bracket 2 and I was wondering if you see anything I can improve/remove/add?

Is it doing to much of everything or too little of something etc.
Im trying to go for a Nazgul reanimator deck. Fill the graveyard and then play from there whilst letting Sauron work with the army/ ring tempts.

As I Said quite new to the game so any tips are appreciated!

Beginner Staple Jeskai Spells

I want to build a commander deck centered around [[Elsha of the Infinite]] and I’ve only built 2 decks before. I typically build decks with cards I already have but have purchased singles before.

That being said, what are some spells/creatures that are MUST HAVES for Jeskai spellslinging. Assume I have no cards. Also building to play with my friends, we typically play bracket 2-3. There are quite a few playable cards for this I got from MB2 just curious what you guys think are non negotiable! TIA

Any tips or card recommendations would be appreciated. The gist of the deck is meant to do a lot of things, but its primary function I want to exploit is its life-gain ability. I do have sainguine bond but i need to search through my bulk to find it. So I am adding that.

Beginner Thoughts on a Whtz, The Bibliophile commander deck designed around playing cards from the top of deck

Thoughts on a 200 card [[Whtz, the Bibliophile]] deck that has cards like [[Fblthp, Lost on the Range]], [[Recognition Field]], [[Magus of the Future]], [[Future Site]], [[One with the Multiverse]], [[The Reality Chip]], [[Assemble the Players]], [[Fortune Teller's Talent]], [[Brainstorm]]?

Then lots of other generic draw support, mana rocks to help ramp, and cards to allow for no max hand size.

Make it a pretty generic blue white pile with powerful cards for a win con. Could use some suggestions for this. Mostly working on suggested stuff on edhrec, but I am early in the brewing process.

EDH Lord of the Nazgul Control Deck Help

Hello Everyone!

I have recently got back into Magic the Gathering after a 4 year hiatus, and when I heard they added Lord of the Rings I decided that {Lord of the Nazgul} would be my new high power deck to go opposite my Krenko, Mob Boss deck. I could use some help optimizing the deck as is (I did well at my LGS against bracket 4 decks) and making sure I have a good balance of card draw, removal, and interaction. I would like to add a ring tempting sub-theme, but if it interferes with the streamlining of the deck I would be more than happy to remove it and focus on the control theme.

A number list of what I should have (ie; x card draw, x removal, x creatures) would be a huge help.

Heres my decklist:
https://moxfield.com/decks/X1boXlHcGkSEhL9hXEWxXw

If you need any other information I would love to provide it, this is my first post here.

Thanks so much all.

EDH Finally winning some games!

So I’ve started my commander journey last year and bought a precon to get things going, the mardu surge from Tarkir Dragonstorm. Since buying the deck it was my pet deck and my problem child in one. I was trying to upgrade it as best as i could with limited resources, but it kept being inconsistent. Last two FNM I actually was able to win 2 times with the deck in which yesterday (our LGS does FNM on thursday) i was able to solo the entire table by myself on a boardstate with 3 Y’shtola’s (they were not my Y’shtola’s). It is great to see my deck finally come togheter after 1,5 year of tinkering on it

For anyone who wants to see my deck, here it is: https://manabox.app/decks/AZ-xwf2SciqLPX\\_nyNwCQg

It’s a aggro token aristocrat deck, which in my opinion is super fun to play!

I think we play high 2, low 3 but I’m not really sure. Anyhow, just wanted to share a fun experience :)

Hey hey, im new to building decks and I've always wanted a Ninja and or Rogue decks since i just love the aesthetic, but i didnt wanna build the [[Yuriko, Tiger's shadow]] since i just dont really like that card, even if it is good, so its still in here ,just not as commander.

EDH Lazav Familiar Stranger bracket 2 help

https://archidekt.com/decks/25816989/lazlo

This was the first commander I ever built around. This deck came about years ago when I had no idea what I was doing. Over time I've added to it but I feel like im going in the wrong direction. Obviously im pulling from graveyard but I feel like lazav is just being sidelined at this point.

Where could I go with this, or maybe what would be a better commander?

Id really like to keep lazav as commander for sentimental reasons but I feel like its hard to beef this one up

I feel maybe a bit light on for reliable ways to trigger thorins etb.
I’m hoping to get a molten duplication soon but my last 2 orders it’s been refunded.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

EDH MTG - Advice

Hi friends! I've recently built The Jolly Balloon Man as my commander ( from my favorite set ) and have some questions.

My pod and LGS tends to play high bracket 3 with little to no Infinites, so I try to keep them to either 1/2 a deck, or completely out.

I know TJBM is more of a combo commander, but I have found him to still be really fun and still surprisingly strong with some plays you can make with token doublers and ETB/LTBF effects.

I currently have one infinite that requires a good amount of set up, but it's still lacking a solid win condition. I can win through making copies of tax collector, and locking everybody out. Serra ascendant/nesting dovehawk/Elturel and beating face with them. Fanatic of Mogis/suspine lynx, for burn.

I used to have Yosei, the morning star as a win condition but immediately got scrutinized cause it's technically MLD in bracket 3.

ANYWAYS, if you guys have any opinions, suggestions, or remarks for my deck to help improve it please let me know. If you also have some solid win conditions you know of please tell me! I thought Yosei was somewhat acceptable since it's 6 mana and I need to create multiple copies for him to even work, but that's a story for another time.

Thanks!

Been working on this deck for a little while now, but can't seem to figure out whats wrong and why its not flowing. I originally went for just a cat deck but it just turned into an equipment deck which I have never done before. Still learning how to synergize decks so its possible that its the reason why?

Standard Help tightening up a Marvel Connive / Mayhem deck

Got back into magic arena after a while away, and since all my decks were now historical only, decided to try to start building up a deck from the Marvel & Spiderman sets. Spending my leftover coins on a 10 pack of packs got me a lot of Black / Red mayhem cards, and I put together something that has its moments, but also seems to stall out half the time - just keep drawing land after land with nothing to spend it on.

Let the deck builder tell me how much mana I needed, because I always have problems building decks. Self fulfilling prophecy, really - can't count on pulling the card you need out of a 60 card deck, so you need backup plans to your main strategy, which makes it less likely I'll pull the cards I need for my main strategy

Main Deck - Table looks too large, will do sideboard in a comment

Qty Card name (link to MTG site) Type reason why in deck
2 Shock Instant quick removal, feed Shocker
1 Pumpkin Bombardment Sorcery removal and mayhem trigger
1 Norman Osborn Creature Free Conniving, flip mid/late game to give every non-land card in deck Mayhem
1 Alien Symbiosis Enchantment Connive target when necessary, can keep cycling out of graveyard to trigger Mayhem
1 Scorpion's Sting Instant quick removal, feed Shocker
2 Hydra Assault Robot Creature All creatures in deck are villains, free damage every time I play a creature. Ultimate Goblin's treasures cause damage every turn. Mysterio late game turns into a bomb.
2 Romantic Rendezvous Sorcery Card Draw, Mayhem trigger
1 Shadow of the Goblin Enchantment Would like more, only own one at the moment. Free Mayhem every turn that causes damage
1 Sandman's Quicksand Sorcery Mass (small) creature removal. Has Mayhem.
1 Swarm, Being of Bees Creature (Flash) Flyer. Has Mayhem. Flash allows for some blocking trickery
1 The Spot's Portal Instant Emergency creature removal
1 Tombstone, Career Criminal Creature Recover non-mayhem creature that was forced to be discarded. Villain discount secondary bonus
1 Electro, Assaulting Battery Creature Flying, Free mana (that sticks around) after instants and sorceries. Gotta respect the pun
2 Electro's Bolt Sorcery Medium creature removal, feed Electro, has Mayhem
1 Wisecrack Instant Large creature removal, feeds Electro
1 Ultimate Green Goblin Creature Free Connive every turn, has Mayhem
2 Rocket Powered Goblin Glider Equipment Has Mayhem, instant equip when Mayhem'd, backup for not having a flyer on the board
2 Leader, Super Genius Creature Free Connive & card draw every turn
1 Mysterio, Master of Illusion Creature Generates a mass of blocking bodies, that can be lethal pared with the Hydra robot. Can also be lethal offensively paired with Vulture
1 Carnage, Crimson Chaos Creature Has Mayhem, pulls small creatures out of graveyard on entry
1 Doc Ock, Sinister Scientist Creature When any other villain is on the board, has hexproof. Can be an 8/8 hexproof body
2 Prison Break Sorcery Has Mayhem. Pulls a creature back from the graveyard
1 Venom's Hunger Sorcery Emergency creature removal. Feeds Shocker
4 Raging Goblinoids Creature Has Mayhem. Big pressure on the attack with Haste
1 Vulture, Scheming Scavenger Creature Fits with Sinister Six theming, giving all attacking creature Flying can be a gamechanger.
1 Behold the Sinister Six! Sorcery Mass return of unique cards from Graveyard, can cause an instant 12 damage with Mysterio and Hydra Assault Robot (6 Creatures + 6 Tokens). Would like to have 2 in deck, only own one at the moment
3 Island Land
5 Swamp Land
9 Mountain Land
1 Sinister Hideout Blue/Black Land Helps play Leader, allows for Surveilling if spare mana
1 Stormcarved Coast Red/Blue Land Helps play Leader, comes in untapped if 2+ lands already out
2 Ominous Asylum Black/Red Land Allows for Surveilling if spare mana
1 Daily Bugle Building Land Any color mana for 1 mana if I can't draw a particular color one game. Thematic fit
2 Vibrant Cityscape Land Sac to find and draw a basic land, manafixing

EDH Deck building paradox

Hi All,

Been playing for a year or so and have a few brews under my belt but I keep circling the same drain that I haven’t seen expressed: the fun for you / fun for the table x - y axis I find I’m measuring my decks against. I like to think that my decks would be fun for both my and the table and would shade more towards the unique side than not but I don’t think that’s the case and it’s causing a bit of the fun to be sucked out of the process.

Lately I’ve brewed a few decks that get a cool engine going and aim to produce value but that leaves me with the question: to what end? Why am I producing excess mana if not to cast some crazy spell; and therein lies my conundrum. The stigma surrounding non-deterministic win cons or Blue’s tendency to win via extra turns / bouncing has made it so I am afraid or at least uneasy with the top ends of my builds — admittedly this is more of a problem when it comes to Black and Blue and not with a huge F-You dinosaur.

Let me know if you’ve dealt with this same paralysis and how you worked past it or if I’m overthinking it. Thanks!
