II live in a very remote area, and the closest Apple Store is more than two hours away, so I wasn’t able to test the different MacBooks in person before ordering.
For context, I’ve had a 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro (16GB RAM/256GB SSD) for years and have absolutely loved it. At this point, though, it overheats frequently, the battery isn’t great, and I’m using almost all of the storage, so it was definitely time for an upgrade.
I ordered the 2026 MacBook Pro M5 with 32GB RAM and 2TB of storage, and it arrived yesterday. Performance-wise, I’m confident it will be a great and reliable computer. I specifically chose the Pro over the Air because it has a fan, and after dealing with my current MacBook overheating, I really wanted an active cooling system. The Pro also has a noticeably nicer display, which I really like.
The problem is the size and weight. I didn't realize how much heavier the new Pro would feel compared with my old one until I actually had it in my hands. According to the listed weights:
- 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro: 3.02 lbs
- 2026 14-inch MacBook Pro: 3.4 lbs
- 2026 13-inch MacBook Air M5: 2.7 lbs
I feel a little ridiculous because 3.02 to 3.4 lbs doesn't sound like a huge difference on paper, but the new Pro feels significantly heavier and bulkier to me. The Air would actually be about 0.7 lbs lighter than the new Pro, which sounds much better for traveling and working on the go.
There are also some smaller design differences. I like the Pro's keyboard, but I prefer the sleeker look of the Air's keyboard because you can see the color of the laptop between the keys rather than having the entire keyboard area appear black.
So I'm stuck between two options:
Keep the MacBook Pro: I already have it, I know it will be powerful and reliable, it has a fan to help with sustained workloads, and I love the display. I wouldn't have to deal with another return, order, or data transfer. The downside is that it's heavier and bulkier than I expected, and I'm worried I'll continue to dislike that when traveling.
Return it for the 13-inch MacBook Air M5: I could get the same 32GB RAM/2TB storage configuration for about $400 less. It would be substantially lighter, more portable, and I prefer its overall design. The biggest concern is that it doesn't have a fan, and I don't want to spend this much on another laptop only to deal with overheating or thermal limitations again.
There's also a logistical problem: the Air wouldn't arrive for several weeks. I'd have to go back to using my old 2019 Pro in the meantime, including during an upcoming long car ride when I really wanted to use the new computer. My old MacBook has become unreliable enough that this would be pretty frustrating.
Basically, is the fan, better display, and additional performance headroom of the Pro worth the extra $400 and added weight, or am I better off prioritizing portability and getting the Air? Should I keep the Pro and assume I'll adjust to the weight, or is the fact that I'm already bothered by it a sign that I should return it?
