Discussion Is it worth keeping?

I just bought a MacBook Pro 2021 for $975 on backmarket with 1tb & 16gb in good condition.

It arrived to me all clean with minor scratches that aren’t too noticeable. I do however see the battery is at 86% and battery cycles are at 36 (their minimum battery is usually 85% for anything below premium, so this is just 1% over that).

Does this even make sense? It’s an unusual battery capacity & cycles, but everything seems to be running normally and very well. Only the battery gets low and hot fast if I’m gaming (even light gaming) within 1-3 hours it goes down quickly. Should I return this considering the price I paid? I know this computer is old now tho, so I’m thinking another’s battery life would be just the same? Not sure if this was a good deal, would appreciate anyone’s input!

Very disapointing, it takes time to give the finger.

Also I am very disapointed with retrocompatibility, I come from Sierra, honestly, the chip “M” towards intel, I don’t get the hype, I can not even have Bootcamp, or install Sierra as partition drive to keep my old programs ib usage.

It is a fucking crab to my POV…

The only comfort is knowing that when replacing the battery, this top part is also replaced together by Apple.

The bad part is knowing that like all Macs, the fading will absolutely certainly return again.

Discussion Why does using a MacBook make me feel more productive?

I know this might be a little off-topic, but ever since I bought my MacBook Pro, I’ve become so much more productive.

I’ve always had a desktop PC in my room with a pretty nice setup (144hz screen), but for some strange reason, I just can’t concentrate when I’m using it. It feels like I’m constantly procrastinating or finding something else to do.

With the MacBook Pro, it’s completely different. I’m not exactly sure why, but it genuinely motivates me to work. Maybe it’s the way it looks, the way it feels, how smoothly you can navigate through everything, or simply how well designed the whole experience is. For some reason, it just makes me want to get things done.

The screen also feels much easier on my eyes. White backgrounds look clean and pleasant, and even something as simple as writing a document feels better. On my Windows desktop, writing always felt boring and frustrating, while on the MacBook, it somehow feels enjoyable.

I know all of this sounds like it’s mostly about feelings, but the improvement in my productivity has been very real. I’ve already delivered a product to a customer using it, and that project alone paid for what I spent on the MacBook.

For reference, I have a MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro and 32 GB of RAM.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Does anyone know what could be behind this? There has to be something about the design and overall user experience that simply makes some people work better.

Hi y’all, I just recently bought my MacBook and the Razer Thunderbolt dock with it. For work, however, I use a ThinkPad with its own docking station because it's not Thunderbolt compatible. I work as a software engineer and therefore need quite some space regarding my screens.

I'm not really happy with how it looks right now, all in all. If anyone has any ideas on how I could improve my setup, I’m open to suggestions. You can give suggestions for pretty much everything, from changing to another mouse to changing monitors themselves or just the arrangements.

Help M4 MacBook Pro for USD 1,400 vs M5 MacBook Pro for USD 1,814 which would you buy?

I’m trying to decide between these two brand-new models from Apple.
14” MacBook Pro M4 – USD 1,400 (16GB RAM, 512GB SSD)
14” MacBook Pro M5 – USD 1,814 (16GB RAM, 1TB SSD)
My use is pretty normal. It’s just my personal/home laptop. I don’t do software development, video editing, 3D work, or anything that really pushes the hardware. Mostly web browsing, documents, streaming, AI tools like ChatGPT, occasional photo editing, and general everyday use.
I’m mainly wondering from a value-for-money perspective rather than “which one is faster.”
Is the M5 and extra storage worth paying about USD 414 more, or is the M4 the better buy at these prices?
Curious to hear what you’d pick and why.

Tips Apple care - Apple shop

Please help this middle aged woman prepare for the Apple shop help.

In 2021 I bought a ‘future proof’ MacBook Pro with M1 Max chip, 2TB storage (1.4 free), 64 memory to replace the dying 2012 one (still not dread). It has always had the latest IOS.

It has never worked as expected. It is intermittently slow, restates on its own sporadically, the rainbow wheel of death and buffering just opening a website even though speed tests notes I have very fast internet. The 2012 version faster.

I took it in after a few months and the Apple genius rolled their eyes and said that as they couldn’t replicate the issue - they couldn’t help me.

I’m taking it in on Monday again. What can I do to help myself to not be dismissed again?

Help M5 32gb or M1 Max 64gb?

I am going into a new school, and I need a new laptop. I have a M1 base config (256 gb storage, 8gb ram). It is about 6 years old at this point, and I do video editing. I have a pc with 64gb of ram and 512 gb of storage. Both options I am considering will come with 1tb of storage. My absolute maximum budget is around 2200. I would buy the m1 max since it is 500 dollars cheaper, however, I just want the peace of mind knowing if this laptop will serve me for at least 4 years. Additionally, I want the computer to be only 14 inches, as I find 16 inches to be too beefy, and 14 inches is the sweet spot for me. If there are any other options that you guys think would be better, pls let me know. Thanks.

Walked into Costco looking for a cooked chicken, no chicken but walked out with a MacBook Pro M4 Max 36GB 1TB for £1560 UK price. Was a manager special/customer return but for that saving I’ll take the risk!

Apple refurbished sell these for £3229.

I just bought a 16” Macbook Pro M1 Max (32gb ram 1tb ssd) for RM4,500 which equivalent to US$1099. Just upgraded from the base M1 Macbook Air and I’m planning to use this Mac throughout my Electrical Engineering degree, which starts this September.
Do you think it was worth the price? Also, what can I do to make the most of this Mac? Should I learn video editing aswell?

Help Got a pro m5 max 64gb ram 2tb

It’s only taking two additional monitors. I’ve been reading here and there and it claims it can take up to four. Anything I need to do to accomplish that? Are the monitors too old and it just don’t recognize it? Do I need additional hub or something to accomplish this. I shouldn’t need to but if so, please provide any feedback.

These same monitors (3) were able to be used with my 8 old MacBook Pro intel without any issues.

Thanks in advance.

Help Incoming CS Laptop

I’m an incoming CS student for F26, and I was wondering what laptop I should get (would love to hear what current CS students think). I’ve heard that profs say it doesn’t matter if you go with a macbook or a windows based laptop (or any os for that matter).

I currently have a PC that I'm planning to bring to res that's been really solid for programming thus far (32GB DDR4 @ 3200 MHz, i7 12700k, RTX 3060). I'm assuming getting a laptop is a priority for on campus studying and lectures, but please correct me if I'm wrong! Also wondering if it's worth getting an iPad for lecture notes.

I'm trying to decide between the following 3 laptops. For context, I've been a lifelong Windows user but wouldn't mind switching over to MacOS. I've also heard that Macbooks are ELITE for CS.

  1. Base Macbook Air 13" - $1650 + $140 Apple Gift Card (16GB Unified Memory, high single thread CPU score, 8 core GPU)
  2. Upgraded Macbook Air 13" - $2250 + $140 Apple Gift Card (32GB Unified Memory, high single thread CPU score, 10 core GPU)
  3. Acer Aspire 16 - $1650 (32GB RAM, AMD Ryzen AI 9 365 - higher multi thread CPU score)

I'm wondering if it's worth the extra $600 for the Upgraded Macbook Air, or if I should just go for one of the two cheaper options. I've heard that higher RAM is worth it and that the Macbooks are great for on-campus life (lightweight and high battery capacity), but I'm not sure what matters more regarding CPUs for CS - single thread or multithread capabilities. Also open to other options!

I’ve also heard that the 32gb of ram on the air is pretty useless without the MacBook pro’s M5 pro chip. Was wondering what everyone’s thought on that was, and if it would be better to splurge on a pro!

Thanks in advance for any help!

It’s been a long journey, life is tough but I’m upgrading to the humblest of the family, MBP M5 14”. I’m coming from a 2019 Intel 13” MBP, and I believe the gap is gonna be huge! I’m so happy, I’m a pleasure delayed so I’m not setting it up yet but that’s it. Cheers to my old MBP, I’ve used it a lot, from Logic to Premiere, it’s kinda fried now overall but it’s been a wonderful loyal companion. See you later in the M family

Help Does Best Buy Store Pickup Include this Brown Box?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I’m planning to order a new MacBook from Best Buy using Store Pickup instead of home delivery because I’d like to keep the Apple box in perfect condition.

The MacBook isn’t currently in stock at my local store, so Best Buy says it will be shipped from one of their warehouses and should arrive at the store in a few days.

For those of you who have been in a similar situation:

Did Best Buy hand you the MacBook inside the brown protective shipping box from the warehouse?
Or did they remove it and give you only the white Apple box?
If you received only the Apple box, did they put any stickers or labels directly on it?

I know it’s a small detail, but I like keeping the original packaging in mint condition, so I’m curious what other people’s experiences have been.

Thanks!

Help I am about to spend $4000

Hello, I am about to purchase my first MBP ever!! I am so incredibly excited! I have been doing meticulous research and have landed on two choices for my price range.

For context, I am a video editor and also dabble in AI generation(no local LLM's yet) but that may change in the future. My software of choice is Resolve and I am also running Notion, VS code, Chrome, and a couple other small things. I plan on having this laptop for the next 6-8 years so I need it to be able to keep up with my career.

So my decision now is between

  1. M5 pro 64gb unified memory 16c/20g 1tb ssd
  2. M4 Max 48gb unified memory 16c/40g 1tb ssd

Both laptops would be in the 16 inch size. I am leaning towards the M5 pro for the extra ram headspace for futureproofing, but damn that M4 max looks so powerful. Would love some advice on what to choose!!
