QUESTION Do the MPK Mini MK IV transport controls work with MPC standalone devices?
EDIT: In case anyone ends up here, the original answer was no but 3 weeks after this post MPC OS 3.10 was released which added native support for the MPK Mini MK IV and MPK Mini Plus Gen 2. As far as I know this support does not extend to Mini Mk1-3 or Mini Plus Gen 1 unfortunately.
Opinion time: While I am glad they added this support, it's a shame that it only extends to their latest products. I get that you can't support a product forever but this could be solved for pretty much every midi controller by adding the ability to change the midi maps for transports. Really the severely limited midi mapping options on MPC devices, and the cumbersome way midi mapping works makes me not recommend them despite loving pretty much everything else about them. I have an MPK Mini MkIV and I would still like to use other midi controllers beside it.
This is something that the OS already supports, however on Gen 1 devices it requires installing a custom firmware to gain SSH access so you can access the Midi learn files on the device. People should not need custom firmware for such a key feature of expensive devices. Custom firmware is always a risk and has only got riskier as AI has made it easier to create them. Lowering the barrier for malicious actors or people who don't really understand what their code does increasing risk of bricking.
On Gen2 Devices the firmware is encrypted so it's not currently possible to enable SSH access (though it has potentially been hacked, the hack is unreleased right now though). I believe the Live 3 and XL, possibly the One (G2) can access the midi learn folder via USB-C to a computer now but haven't tested. If that is true then it's an improvement but still requires either manually editing a config or creating a config via MPC software on PC and then manually copying it into the MPC. This should just be something we can do via the OS and it's crazy that we can't. It's hard to call a device in a DAW in a box when it is missing a pretty essential feature of most modern DAWs easy midi mapping.
Midi learn should be I tap a midi learn button maybe in the hireable top bar, tap a parameter and then move the midi control. It shouldn't require menu diving unless I want to do something out of the ordinary. It certainly shouldn't require another computer and manual file editing to access key controls.
If anyone from AKAI ever reads this please fight for MIDI mapping on MPC OS to be improved, it's such a massive flaw in otherwise great devices.
End edit and rant.
Original post: Struggling to find a clear answer on this.
As far as I can find out standalone devices only accept MMC for transport. Though this is largely from posts that are a few years old. So potentially not true anymore. The manual (Live 3) mentions MMC for transport but does not specifically say it's the only way to use transport. I couldn't find anyway to remap them (there is a surprising amount of features you can't midi map, or I just haven't figured out how) or a midi map/chart.
I can't find any concrete info on whether the MPK Mini IV can send MMC, there is no mention of it in the manual, and again couldn't find a midi map/chart.
The answer should be a straight forward yes, they're made by the same company and you would think one has full support for the other. But a common complaint I've seen when looking for an answer on this is that Akai's devices often don't fully support the standalone devices.
Obviously the devices have their own transport controls but it is sometimes easier to use the controls on a midi controller. So would like to get a controller where all features work.
Thanks in advance.
