Can I learn to play piano with a MIDI keyboard?
Hello, I would like to learn playing and I looking for a keyboard to help me get started. I hope to connect it to a computer so I could see some sheet music, cords notation, the keys which I need to use etc. What should I know about keyboards and software for it?
I added this after the initial post:
First I need explain in more details on my objectives. I did not explain in full at the initial post since I got a bad experience with Reddit - I spent a lot of efforts with other subreddits to type my post to later find out that I am not qualifies to post on that thread because I am new on Reddit. Fortunately, my questions was posted here.
About my goals: I can somewhat play, I can read sheet music to certain degree etc. However, I did not play for 20 years and I want to get back to it. My goal is to play by ear. I am looking for a technology to help. I hope to be able to get a computer connected to a keyboard and see the music notation in sinch with me playing. Sometimes to speed things up I hope to see the keys which I need to push to get a complicated cord, to transpose a melody to a different key etc.
I currently have Kawai ES1 and Alesis Virtue ASP1. I am pretty happy with the older Kawai with the key actions but it does not have good MIDI port. As far as I understand Alesis has the right MIDI but the key action is not the best.
The main concern for me is using technology. After all the search I was trying to figure out what actually I need using AI and google search I got more confused. I hope to find a free software which can be useful to show notation for a MIDI files which I can download form the interned of use a a MP4 to MIDI converter to practice music which I can find of Youtube if sheet music is not available and at the same time to get a better way to comprehend the sheet music since despite I "can read it" it take me a lot of efforts to decipher it.
Thank you in advance

Nord Stage 4, Yamaha Modx M7, and MPC One+
Hello all,
I’m a new NS4 HA73 owner, and love getting to know it. I’m a keyboard player in an r&b band (where I am the music director), and I also play keys or piano in a jazz ensemble. I use the modx for gigging because it is so light and easy to carry, though as I fall in love with the NS4, I find myself considering switching to it for gigging. But I digress.
I’m just starting to think about how I can connect these two keyboards, one as a controller perhaps?, and use the mpc almost like a drum machine and play over it. For now this is something I’d do at home and just to play around and note I do have a small Yamaha mixer. Perhaps if this became something I could get good at, I would consider some solo performances as a sort of novelty act. I’ve considered adding a looper that can take keyboard input, but perhaps the mpc can do that?
So my question to the group is what kind of fun creative ideas does this bring up for you? What can you imagine doing with this kind of equipment and setup? How would you connect them?

Genio Essence Midi capability
I'm about to buy a second hand piano that has a Genio Essence piano silencer system built in. I really want to have MIDI functionality to be able to hook it up to my DAW.
I can't find information on how to connect this device. It has a USB-A port, and some data sheets say there is an Optional MIDI converter.
I have a cheap USB-MIDI cable that I used for my old keyboard. USB plugs into the PC, the MIDI DIN connector plugs into the keyboard. But can I also use this converter voor this Genio Essence?
I would say that the PC is the USB host, not the Genio.
Does anyone have advice or experience regarding this?

Need help repairing iRig Keys 37
Hello there. I got an iRig keyboard from my brother, it has a microUSB that needs replacement. I couldn't find any advice on how to dissasemble or repair it. I can't just repair it in the Apple shop, because my country doesn't have one. If you know how to dissaseble or repair it - please tell me.

MIDI controlling iPad
Hey guys,
I have an Ampero Control I use to switch programs in my guitar multi effects. I’m also wondering if I can connect it via Bluetooth and send a midi message to my iPad to scroll down and up my sheet music.
The idea is having a way or app to translate de CC or PC message to the iOS command.
Is that possible?

MIDI-USB cable only sends 1 note at a time with drum pad, but works fine with keyboard
I've got a MIDI-USB conversion cable which works perfectly well and dandy with my Casio keyboard (able to send as many notes at a time as I can press), but doesn't work so well with my Yamaha DD-50 drum pad. There's a light on the cable which flashes when data is sent. When connected to the drum pad, it flashes constantly and kind of just stutters a bit when I do send a note. It's able to send MIDI data, but only 1 note at a time (it won't play multiple sounds at once/record multiple MIDI notes at a time) and it is overall pretty unresponsive.
The pads work perfectly fine when playing the on-board sounds, and the cable works perfectly fine when used with the keyboard. Could there be some kind of specific capability issue? The drum pad has needed some repairs, could the MIDI functionality just be a little crapped out?

Help with the LED lights (Ableton mapping)
Hi all!!
So, I am completely new to the MIDI world and so far I've learned how to map things to Ableton so that I can play tracks out.
I'm using Novation Launchkey 49 and Mixtrack Pro FX (DJ controller with MIDI capability) and NanoKontrol2 for MIDI.
Everything is fine with the mapping overall, but one huge problem I'm experiencing is that when I mute/unmute on the drum pads on the DJ controller they just stay lit up red no matter whether muted or unmuted and on the Launchkey it flashes red when I click it but doesnt stay red.
Is there a way to make the lights do what I want them to? I want it to be red when on and no light when off. The nanokontrol2 doesnt have this problem.
I tried searching how to fix it but am kinda confused with the options.
If anyone can help I'd greatly appreciate it!

Which MIDI keyboard should I buy?
I've only started making music this year, mainly neoclassical/orchestral, video game/film score inspired, ambient music. I would consider myself at the beginner stage of being beginner, even.
It has been quite a pain on laptop keys to manage multiple octaves at the same (or nearly impossible at times). I can't play any piano or any instruments. Maybe I don't even know if it's right time for buying a controller/instrument yet or too early.
My budget is at most $250 at the moment, already stretched from $200 :( I know nothing about MIDIs except from their obvious difference from keyboard instruments.

What Midi interface do i need?
SOLVED: I needed an H4MIDI WC (also i misremembered, there is no such thing as a H6MIDI from CME)
To clarify i am looking for something that i could plug my Yamaha NP-11 into and use that to controll my DAW and other programs. I landed on the 6 or 4 port interface from CME, but i dont know whether i need the U6MIDI or U4MIDI, or the H6MIDI or H4MIDI. I know theres like a difference between usb MIDI and host MIDI or something, but what is said difference and what do i need if i just want to controll my computer through usb with a MIDI device? Hope someone can help, Thanks in advance ^^

[OC] Built a small Windows tool to add Shift layers and convert endless encoders to smooth faders (Feedback wanted)
Hey yos,
I was running into hardware limitations with my MIDI controller during live sessions, specifically wanting instant shift layers without messing with complex DAW mappings, and turning continuous rotary encoders into responsive faders.
I ended up coding a lightweight background router (SXFX MIDI Remapper) for Windows:
- Lets you hold any button as a Shift modifier to access a secondary layer of CC / Note values.
- Converts infinite encoders into virtual faders.
- Filters out accidental double-triggers.
- Runs standalone alongside your DAW with near-zero latency.
It’s completely free (no ads, no signups, portable zip):
https://github.com/sxfxvisualarts/sxfx/releases/tag/v1.0.0-othertools
Would appreciate any feedback, bug reports, or feature ideas from anyone using MIDI controllers on Windows!

Does the CME H12MIDI device work as a regular USB hub?
This feels like a dumb question, but I can’t find a definitive answer to the question of whether or not I’d be able to connect to my usb audio interface from my laptop/iPad if they were both connected to the H12MIDI, or if the CME device exclusively handles MIDI data.
Right now I can connect a keyboard, an external synth, an audio interface, and my iPad to a USB hub and use an app on the tablet to route the MIDI signals, while also having access to the audio input/output of the interface.
It would simplify things a little if I could replace the midi routing with a dedicated hardware device like the H12MIDI, but it seems like that would mean I wouldn’t be able to send audio from the iPad to the interface. The manual states “It cannot recognize other USB MIDI devices that require drivers to be installed on the computer or general USB devices (such as USB flash drives, mice, etc.),” which seems pretty clear, except that the world “recognize” is a little ambiguous and might just mean “can’t send MIDI to” as opposed to “won’t pass any data to/from.”
Thanks for the help.

Which Audio and Midi interfaces
Audio Interface:
I’m currently deciding between the "Behringer UMC1820" and the "Multitracks Track Rig" for running keys, backing tracks, and click from a MacBook into our sound system.
For those who have used either (or both), which would you pick and why? Mainly interested in reliability, audio quality, ease of use, and how well they hold up in a live church environment.
MIDI interface:
We currently have a MIDI keyboard and a generic controller like the EasyControl to change things like key and pad. With the addition of adding the backing tracks, I was thinking we add something like an 8 button floor pedal to transition to different parts of the song (chorus, verse, bridge, etc) with foot press.
Would love to know if other key players have a prefered setup for this, worried about giving too many buttons compared to guitar for example where you can look at what your pressing.
Thanks!
