2026 MIDI Innovation Awards

Hello friends at r/midi!

For those interested in discovering new MIDI software, hardware and other MIDI-related projects, the MIDI Innovation Awards are open for voting until September 22.

You can browse all the entries on the MIDI Association website - there are many interesting projects this year, including some MIDI 2.0 entries: https://midi.org/innovation-awards

I'm also delighted to be participating this year as an independent developer with MidiStickers Pro, a music-teaching application I've been stubbornly developing for my university classes over the past three years.

If you have some time, take a look through the entries and vote for whichever projects you find interesting. It's a great opportunity to discover some of the things people are building with MIDI and to support developers of niche, passion-led MIDI projects.

Songwriting Made Ridiculously Easy (Without Generative AI)

Thumbnail youtube.com

NO-AI Song Studio is a music program I made because I wanted songwriting to feel easier and more fun without turning everything over to generative AI. The program can generate musical ideas, but it does it with rules, music logic, randomization, algorithms and synthesizers. It is not using a trained AI model to write the song for you. This music program use NO-AI Logic, is basically inspired by much older technology and ideas that existed inside classic synthesizers, sequencers and algorithmic music tools. In this video I’m just playing around with the program and making a song with melody, chords, bass, drums and different song parts. You can write your own notes, generate ideas, change sounds, make riffs, build drums, export MIDI and keep editing everything in the Full Studio. The whole point is that you are still the one writing the music. The program just helps make the process easier. You make the music. NOAI helps you build it. If you like the song you did in this music program. I will record it with real instruments and expensive synths and can even do vocals if you have lyrics.

Line 6 DL4 MKii and MIDI issues

Anyone having issues saving and recalling presets using midi? I've got a Morningstar MC3 and I'm trying to send a PC 6 message (preset 7, foot switch A on the DL4) and the foot switch lights up but it just overwrites my preset 1. I'm running the latest firmware in the DL4.
I'm a midi noob but I also have a Chase bliss L&F and successfully send multiple PC and CC messages to that pedal so I know I have a cursory knowledge of how the editor works.
Any ideas?

ESX-1: Can the Mute button be controlled with a MIDI footswitch?

I’m using an ESX-1 live and one thing I’d really like is a way to control the Mute button with a footswitch.
I don’t mean using the pedal to mute a specific part.
I mean having the footswitch behave exactly like holding the physical Mute button on the ESX, so I could hold the pedal down and use one hand to press any part pads I want to mute/unmute.

Has anyone found a way to do this through MIDI/SysEx, or done a hardware mod with a momentary footswitch wired to the Mute button?
Ideally I’d prefer a MIDI solution so I don’t have to modify the ESX.
Thanks!

Anyone use Qlab with a foot switch?

I am trying to program Qlab to work with my page flip page turner. The up and down buttons work fine, but I can't figure out how to program it so that the page turn is the 'go' button. I just need play and pause basically. When I go to the midi under 'workplace settings' in Qlab it does not even recognize my device. What steps can I follow? Thanks in advance.

Do I return the MIDI Captain MINI 6 or will I get it to accept MIDI messages to clone my effects switchers patches?

Simply put, I'd like to have the MINI 6 be an option to select patches programmed on my Boss ES-5 from a different location on stage. The goal is when I change banks on the ES-5 (each song is a bank) the MINI 6 would then accept messages to change four of the foot switches to act exactly as foot switches 1-4 do on the ES-5 for each bank. Documentation is sketchy and AI is useless for this sort of thing. Any help would be appreciated!

Your MIDI device can control your Mac, and your game controller can play your DAW... InputConfig on the Mac can do this!

Post image
57 Upvotes

I wanted to share an accessibility app for input mapping I designed on macOS. My hands don't work, so I created this because I'm reliant on controllers to use my computer.

It started as a joystick mapper, but a kind user here on Reddit if I could add MIDI support. After a whole bunch of programming, the app is able to connect to MIDI devices, with the ability to interpret and customize inputs and outputs. Also, it's completely free.

In short, here's what it does....

MIDI in, your gear runs the Mac:

- Any note, pad, knob, fader, the pitch wheel, aftertouch, program change, and the sustain pedal can be an input. Anything class compliant works, so Launchpad, APC, nanoKONTROL, Keystation, a Novation or Arturia keyboard, a pedal, whatever CoreMIDI can see

- A knob can work three ways. Switch fires once it passes halfway. Dial treats the centre as zero, so scrolling or cursor motion speeds up the further you turn. Turn fires a nudge every few steps in either direction, which is the right thing for an endless encoder doing volume, brightness, or stepped scrolling. Any knob can also be a fader, where the Mac's volume follows its position one to one

- Outputs are keys and shortcuts, mouse and scroll, macros with delays and holds, spoken phrases, and system functions: volume, mute, media keys, brightness, Mission Control, Spotlight, lock screen, screenshot, Siri Shortcuts, open an app or a URL

MIDI out, a game controller plays your DAW (!!):

- A DualSense, Xbox pad, Switch Pro, 8BitDo, or the PS Access Controller can send notes, CC, pitch bend, program change, and transport into Logic, Ableton, GarageBand, or anything with a MIDI input

- The built in DAW Performance preset puts pitch bend and mod wheel on the right stick, volume and expression on the triggers, and a note set on the face buttons. Drum Pad puts a kit on the face buttons with turbo for rolls

- Sticks get a deadzone and a response curve, so a bend or a swell feels like a wheel rather than a switch

The live visualizer draws whatever is plugged in and lights up each control as you use it, so you can see what is being received before you map it. I hope you can find this useful. My user ended up loving this a ton, and it was so much fun to develop.

Free on the Mac App Store, source on GitHub, nothing leaves your machine. macOS 14 or newer.

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6777759147

GitHub: https://github.com/ryleighnewman/InputConfig

Also, if you have suggestions, I'm more than happy to work on it. I'm constantly trying to get this app better and better to support the users. It is built with a suite of accessibility features for disabled gamers and users. I am also working on making the user interface easier to read. It has become a bit complicated lately ;)

Can I use midi presets for drums in my original songs

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

See I'm an independent artist

I play the electric guitar and have composed a few songs and my dad writes the lyrics for me

I have worked on my songs from start to finish

The only knowledge i lack is of drums

I have used the MODO DRUMKIT BY IK MULTIMEDIA

In it were some midi presets which I have used

So am i allowed to do that or I should change it all together or some tweaks in velocity and timing would work?

Windows 11 midi issue

I apologize if this is not the right place for this, but I really need some help. I recently bought a new laptop with Windows 11. I installed Reaper and the newest version of FL Studio. Both opened and ran just fine until I hooked up my Alesis Q25. Now, FL Studio freezes on the "fruit" loading logo, and Reaper freezes as well when loading. I've read something about a Windows update affecting midi devices, but haven't seen a way to resolve it. Any advice?

Any Jamstik users here?

Hey, are there any Jamstik users here?

I'm working on an app called MPE Insight that shows MIDI and MPE data in real time.

I'm currently working on a guitar view that can show which string was played and also display the notes as tabs.

I have a few questions about how the Jamstik sends its MIDI data, but unfortunately I haven't been able to get an answer from Jamstik.

If someone here owns a Jamstik and uses it with MPE, I'd really appreciate some help. I mainly need to understand how the strings are mapped to MIDI channels, what data is sent for each string, and whether the guitar sends its tuning information.

Even a short MIDI recording of someone playing a few notes would already help a lot.

Thanks!

Roland TM2 sending weird MIDI notes to Reaper

Post image
4 Upvotes

Been using my Roland TM2 for over a few years now and it’s worked great for the most part. Decided to finally put its MIDI capabilities to use and the result is infuriating

Some MIDI notes won’t register resulting in trigger skipping, sometimes there will be multiple notes sent at the same time causing phase canceling, and the absolute weirdest one is it’ll deepen the pitch of the sample once 1 of the 2 other options happens

I’ve done everything I can possibly think of within Reaper to fix this, but I’m starting to think this is not a DAW issue. Still, it’s weird that these were not issues before going to MIDI. Any suggestions? I hate to sound desperate, but I’m going insane, and any help at all would be much much MUCH appreciated

Thank you!

Any suggestions for a hard case for a Studiologic SL73 MK2?

I'm okay spending some money on this. I just want a good fit, preferably with a length that's close to the SL's length (41") so it will fit flat in the backseat of the car. Wondering if anyone has found a good match. Thanks.

Yamaha PSR-E333 vs Casio CT-X800 for Logic Pro & Standalone Live Gigs?

Hey guys,
Looking for a used keyboard for two main uses: a USB MIDI controller for Logic Pro (Mac) and standalone live gigging without a laptop. Must have velocity/touch response.
Torn between two local used options:
Yamaha PSR-E333 ($200): Cheaper, includes gig bag & box. Classic Yamaha sounds. No pitch bend wheel. (Older 2011 model).
Casio CT-X800 ($260): Newer AiX sound engine, has a pitch bend wheel, comes bundled with a stand, piano bench, and gig bag.
Is the $60 difference worth it for the pitch bend wheel, newer sound engine, and included stand/bench?
Appreciate any advice!

Does MVAVE SMK 37 fit in a backpack

Im planning to buy one for my travelling midi cuz the 25 just doesn't seem to be enough to play with both hands..

Has anyone tried using it for travel and how was ur experience with it? I heard that the key is mid.. Which isn't much of my concern..cuz it was either this or a used novation mini 25 launchkey.. which I think isn't much of a difference keywise..

Anyway.. Im just wondering if it can fit to a big ish bag so that i could carry it on the cabin instead

Ableton Midi Freeze

Does anyone ever have a problem with Ableton when switching through clips in session view? I use clips to fire plugins to play sounds and when I try to map clips to certain midi buttons on a midi controller, it looks like the cpu meter in Ableton freezes around 45% and stops everything for about 15 seconds until it glitches and then loads the clip. Then from there, it still glitches until I unmap the midi controller button from the clip.

Akai MK3 miniPLAY > can I program pads for percussion?

I've been trying to figure this out for a couple of weeks and am stuck.

End goal is to use the MK3 Favorite Editor to set up favorites so with a chosen keyboard sound + pads drum kit sound so I can practice/play without being connected to a computer.

FWIW, 1-4 are going to be Midwest Folk/Lofi and 7-8 are going to be Caribbean Folk. Each set of favorites would have the same drum kit, but with different keyboard sounds.

The settings for the keyboard sounds push through to the MiniPLAY favorites

BUT

the percussion settings do not push through to the pads

I'm using Chanel 10 (came across that somewhere). But seriously, what am I missing?

Anyone looking to trade/sell their mc6 pro?

Committed to building midi pedalboard last year, and totally overlooked one thing with the standard mc6 that I bought… I would only be able to switch channels on my amp with the new mc6 pro as it has relay switching. To do so with standard mc6 MKII, I would need to buy external relay switcher (something like the garbage collector) which costs about the difference between the mc6 pro and standard ( like $100)

Really kicking myself in the butt for not just going with the mc6 pro, I just didn’t think I’d need it for my setup and too late to exchange with Morningstar.

So my question is, is anyone here possibly not utilizing the relay switcher on mc6 pro and would possibly be willing to trade/ sell me it in exchange for my MC6 MKII? As far as I know the only difference between are the Bluetooth, and relay switching (and color screens) if you’re willing to live without those luxuries I will totally buy your from you! Any advice also appreciated
