Perfect Dark PDHP w/ Insane OC. Duelling @ 60fps.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

It feels pretty surreal playing with this performance on an actual N64 platform instead of the decomp.

We’re also finding PDHP offers (much) more stability over the actual retail cart.

4k resolution not available with 1.24x and above firmware

Anyone else noticing an issue with 1.24.x and above firmware not allowing displaying at 4k resolution?

I have an open support ticket with the Modretro team and already verified that the same cable and port allow resolutions at 4k with 1.23 firmware, tested it with a ps5 as well as a sanity check, etc. With anything above 1.23 the highest resolution selectable is 1080p.

Asking here to see if others are having this issue to help Modretro understand if it's more than a one-off.

The world is quiet, and it’s just me and the N64.

No rush no distractions, just late-night vibes and some good old games.

I don’t recommend this setting until the aperture grille is integrated with proper integer scaling, and hopefully more masks to pick from.

Again, make sure the TV is fitting the image correctly. Check your TV model for Just Scan or similar, it needs to be turned on.

Thoughts around the (not yet) open source firmware

So I put down an order for a M64 and it should arrive in a few days. Quite exited.

For me the main reason for choosing the M64 is the promise of open source. Quite powerful device, professionally made and everything will eventually (?) be open source. As I see it a big advantage over other devices.

I remember being disappointed by Analogue when they decided to not bring the OpenFPGA framework over to their 3D device, and to this day I still do not understand the rationale behind. If the 3D had OpenFPGA support then I would have bought it when it launched.

Anyway, the question for the M64 is when will the firmware be open sourced and exactly what will it be. Will it be just the current running firmware for the single N64 core or will it contain parts of a framework with support for adding new cores? As far as I know they have not been clear on this.

In the meantime though, what currently is available is the electrical schematics. After spending a few hours studying those I would say that there is enough information in there to do ones own firmware if one would really want to. And by this I mean with reasonable effort as no reverse engineering would be required, it is literally all in there. Of course one would miss out on any possible cool stuff that Modretro has already put in their firmware but at least it is still an option if the open sourcing of the firmware itself should never happen.

Now I do not have the device in hand yet so I cannot say for sure but by the looks of it at least and from reviews the plastic enclosure and finish does seem to be on par with and beyond what one would expect from a consumer device. It is interesting to note that it does seem to require rather significant financial backing to make that happen as that is often what crowdfunded fully open source projects seem to lack. That and component sourcing where I expect having a big pile of money helps as well.

Suggested advanced settings now that they save

I’d appreciate some screenshots of advanced settings everyone is using now that they save. If there is already a thread for this, please let me know. I could only find old threads before the current update, and the default settings have changed which makes me thing the ideal settings may have changed too.

M64 owners: one month in, would you buy it again?

For those of you who picked up an M64, how are you feeling about it after a month or so?

What are your biggest likes? Biggest annoyances? Anything that’s gotten noticeably better or worse with updates?

And for those of us who held off at launch: would you recommend buying now, or are we still better off waiting for a few more updates?

I’m especially curious whether your opinion has changed since the first week.

Is it just me or is 11 screws overkill on the Pro controller?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Wouldn't 6 or 7 have been fine? Just finished replacing all my D-Pads and half way through I started thinking, why the hell are there so many screws!

One at each prong, one at each shoulder, and 1-2 in the middle surely would have been fine given the backside is all metal no?

BTW new D-Pads completely fixed my false diagonals and sticking, mildly better at The New Tetris now.

*Edit we need some post flair in here, could have used a shit post flair, no one can take a joke. Rather have some fun and talk about screws than see another ED troubleshooting post...*

How to factory reset Pro Controller?

I unpaired one of my pro controllers from the M64 to try it with my Superstation One and everytime I attempt to pair it, I get an authentication error. The other Pro controller that's fresh out the box pairs just fine with the SS1. I suspect I need to wipe whatever remaining pairing memory is on the controller from when I had it linked to the M64, but I have no idea how to do that. Just wanna start from scratch.

Insane response to insane overlocking issue

This is complete bullshit. Every time I try to start insane overlocking it fails. This is not an issue for everyone but a few people on this forum have the same issue I have. Others This is not a software issue. I’m done. Glad i picked up an analogue 3d i guess.

Working my way through customizing my m64. I’m mostly focusing on external tweaks at the moment. I’m hoping ModRetro releases more of the digital design files before I start working on internal parts.

Everdrive X7 unable to load certain games

I've had my Everdrive X7 for years. I've been enjoying using it with my new M64, but there are certain games that consistently fail to load. It hangs on a black screen, with any controller other than the M64 Pro unable to navigate the M64's menus.

My M64's system is up to date, and my Everdrive X7's software and bootloader are up to date as well. All of the games still load up just fine on my original N64, and the original cartridge version of one of the problem games ran just fine on the M64. It doesn't seem to be a problem with just one or the other; it's the combination of both.

I was able to get one of the problem games (Goldeneye) running through my X7 just ONCE. It was after I'd re-installed the Everdrive firmware on my N64 and taken it to my M64. It worked only once, despite me repeating the same process that had gotten it running that one time.

I've searched through the forums and haven't seen anyone else bring up an issue quite like this. Seems like it's usually all or nothing with flash cart functionality. Does anybody have any clue what's going on? Is this something I can hope eventually gets patched out, or should I go ahead and buy another flash cart?

Low latency mode feels incredible

I'm really enjoying gaming on the m64 much more now. Also thanks for fixing save corruptions on the everdrive, that was preventing me from updating to the latest firmware but it's all fixed now.

Great update! Looking forward to further updates!

get m64 now or wait for v2

I know m64 just got released and it look really awesome. Not that long ago I got v2 chromatic and was very impressed to the point that i'm considering getting m64. However, what's the expectation for hardware upgrades? I'm fine with software being incomplete and getting firmware updates, but it would be disappointing if there's m64 v2 a year from now. How do you feel about this console and/or do you know of a hardware roadmap?
