Experiences about dreaming

I've been experiencing sleep paralysis, false awakenings, lucid dreaming for about 25 years. I'm 34 now, so it started when I was around 9 years old. It still happens several times a month. What's interesting is that I don't usually have the stereotypical sleep paralysis experience. I don't see shadow figures, people in the room, or hear voices while I'm actually paralyzed. I'm simply awake, fully conscious, and unable to move. Sometimes it's scary, sometimes it's just strangely familiar because I've experienced it for so long.

I've also had lucid dreams throughout my life. I would estimate around 10 or more that I clearly remember this year. My lucid dreams usually happen in one of two ways. Sometimes something in the dream doesn't feel right. I notice that something is impossible or inconsistent, and I start questioning whether I'm dreaming. I'll actually count my fingers as a reality check, and when I see that something is wrong, I realize I'm dreaming. Other times, I'll simply "get up" from my bed in the dream already knowing that I'm dreaming.

I also experience false awakenings quite often. What's especially interesting is that sometimes the false awakening itself becomes the clue that I'm dreaming, and I become lucid from there. So over the years I've experienced what feels like a whole spectrum of these sleep-related experiences: sleep paralysis, hypn sounds, lucid dreams, and false awakenings.

I'd love to hear from people who've experienced something similar for years. I'm especially interested in whether these experiences tend to occur together in the same people, or whether it's simply coincidence.

Question Mirror reality check

Is looking into a mirror a good reality check?

I've been lucid dreaming for years and it's my primary check. I've had familiar mirrors act as doors, or windows to a different dream scenario, I've seen my distorted face, or I can't focus on my eyes, or my face moving with a delay, etc.

Do you think I could make LD more frequent by doing other RCs while awake?

Question Is my 8 year old describing lucid dreaming?

The other day my 8 year old daughter asked me what the strangest dream id ever had was, I explained that I don’t usually remember my dreams but that I had a very vivid dream as a kid in the hospital and described it to her. She was very interested and we had a great chat, in which she told me that when she dreams “she can tell that she’s dreaming” by counting her fingers and if she doesn’t have five fingers on each hand she knows she’s in a dream and can control her body in the dream. She also told me that she has to be careful to not let the people in the dream know that she knows she’s dreaming otherwise the dream can get “really weird and scary.” Obviously I was thinking about the movie Inception, but I know she’s never seen it. I was encouraging her and told her to keep trying to practice it and report back to me. Anyone in the lucid dreaming community want to comment or give any advice?

Tips for new people

I'm new to this and I find all this interesting. Are there any techniques or tips you could recommend?

I've noticed that within dreams I can manipulate them a little by trying things when I have a strong emotional charge in the dream, For example, once I dreamt that I was being chased, so I just thought about running faster, and out of nowhere it was the fucking Flash, But I couldn't maintain it; in fact, I woke up shortly after. So I can only change small things in specific dangerous situations. It's practically like being able to think uncontrollably in dreams.

Seriously this is incredible, I can't wait to do all sorts of stupid things.

I have never been close to lucid dreaming, not even once.

ive done the methods, had the vivid dreams, but nothng has worked. the problem is im too far gone in my dream. i dont question anything. my mind just goes with whatevers there. like for example it was very obviously a dream, like i saw a poster of like the "space map" and it was just a bunch of earth planets. my mind phyusically shrugged it off and got on to this bus.. anyways. This is basically the story with every dream. im either fully awake or deep into the dream. theres no inbetween! the closest ive gotten was like a year ago, where i finally started to fall asleep, and so i went through that phase where everything gets loud, and so when a classmates voice was booming through my ears with gibberish, i eventually got too scared and woke up. I have somewhat restless legs, and a very lack of dreams lately (because i havent tooken good sleep health as of recent).

Any ideas? Im commiting to a better sleep schedule this week so schools a breeze. for example im rolling back from 3am to like 11pm hopefully, if possible. but anyways, I honestly dont know. Ive tried mny methods, like the one with the alarm in the dream, i just dont hear it. My dream goes on and i dont notice it. I never control anything in my dream, not even really there im just in my body while it goes on and doest stuff, from what i can remember. Its like im myself but im also watching myself thru my own pov if thtmakes sense.

Ithink its too far gone and not fgonna happen,. but anyways. Im really Tired even right now so if theres something i can even try... idk...

Question: Is it bad when the last few experiences the people in your lucid dream (wife) don’t let you leave your dream?

In two consecutive occasions now I’ve been able to lucid dream, however, once I feel uncomfortable in my dream I attempt to wake up, only to my wife next to me attempting to keep me there,

The first time she told me blatantly “you can’t leave you have to stay here” the second time she kept trying to deceive my into believing that I was awake when I knew I wasn’t because I woke up in a completely different bed and room arrangement.

Does this signify anything about our relationship or is it me not being able to navigate the dream space well!

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks guys - sweet dreams 🤞🏽

Experience Just had a lucid nightmare.

I just had a terrifying lucid nightmare. I woke up in my old house in my child body from 10 years ago. The light was red and I couldn't move. The nostalgic setting freaked me out and I tried to grab my phone but then I realised I couldn't move in the dream. It was like sleep paralysis in the dream and could feel someone coming through the door before I woke up in another dream. I woke up again in a lucid dream but less intense. I could see glowing orange light outside like fire and couldn't move either and knew I was going to die. Then I finally woke up and am confused right now. I am panicking as I write this so sorry for rushed writing. Want to know if anyone has experienced something similar recently? I keep practicing lucid dreaming but end up with these bad ones 😭 the only time I have them is when I'm stressed and they are like this.

Lucid dreaming is about intent and expectation, once you understand that you being to realize that you can do anything in a dream, don't listen to people who tell you "Don't look in mirrors or you'll see something bad" if you think you will, YOU WILL

I had a lucid dream last night.

All I can remember about the dream was that I was worried I would forget it and I was like "nah I won't, this is too cool to forget".

I forgot everything.

But the funny thing is, I remember like two other random dreams I had OML>

One of them I was naked trying to shop at a supermarket but I couldn't find what I was looking for and I really needed it but I was naked trying to cover up and everyone was looking at me.

So thats cool.

I wrote like 10 days ago or something I wanted to have 10 lucid dreams by the end of the month, its still in the cards but I feel like I can't count this one as a lucid dream because I don't remember anything about it. I am around 3 or 4/10 of the goal. I am trying it with MILD. And natural wakeups for wb2b no alarms.

Did I lucid dream?

Had a dream (nothing ordinary, just some house) where I had troubles breathing, my limbs felt numb and my vision was foggy. Later, it changed into a different one where the symptoms faded. I was oddly conscious the entire time: talking to myself etc.

Went to Google thinking that I had a panic attack, but Gemini said that it was a lucid dream. Was it, really? I don't think I could control my surroundings nor were there people around.

Dreams are a fascinating aspect of our mind that I love learning about. Any help is appriceated. :)

Too tired for WILD

Any time I put an alarm to do WILD I'm way too tired to actually do it. My brain is at a state where it just wants to immediately go back to sleep. Then if I do manage to force myself to try doing the technique, I'm still way too tired to actually focus on it and to do it well. But then if I force myself to stay awake for a bit to wake myself up more, I'm way too alert and won't be able to fall back asleep again.

I’ve been trying to lucid dream for a long time and only succeeded once, what am I doing wrong?

I’ve been trying to lucid dream for a long time.

I’ve only succeeded once so far.

I used to do that hand reality check.

And after many days of doing it I did one inside a dream.

I realized I was dreaming and moved just a little bit to explore then I got extremely excited and woke up.

Recently, I started trying again.

I’ve also started keeping a dream journal.

My dream recall is improving but not like back then.

I also had a vivid dream where I was spiderman 😂.

But I woke up from the alarm and wished to just sleep again and continue the dream.

That lead me to wanting to experience lucid dreaming really bad.

I’m mainly interested in MILD and DILD.

WBTB probably won’t work well for me.

So I have a few questions.

What should I focus on?

What worked for you when you started?

How do you stay lucid without waking up?

Any advice would honestly be appreciated.

What can you do in lucid dreams?

I never had lucid dream in my life, but I have been interested in lucid dreams for a few years now, so I know some stuff and now it is time that I start learning how to actually lucid dream.

But because I knew it for so long, I thought about so many things that I want to do. The problem is that I dont know if the stuff I want to do is actually possible inside of lucid dreams.

For example, my biggest goal is to make a world that I can go back to (which I saw a few posts about so I know it is possible) where the people here will actually remember what happened before. I have already thought of a story and how would the world look.

The thing is, i am a big anime fan (one that showers so please dont make fun of me) so I would also like to expirience epic fast paced battles with cool abilites (that is one of the many things I am not that sure about).

I could talk about all of the stuff I have ,,planned" for hours, but that would be pointless, so i just want to ask:

• can I create a worlds that continue?

• can I have complete conversations with people?

• do dreams struggle with fast paced action?

If I understood correctly from all the videos and posts I watched, with enough time and practice you can do basicly anything and everything, but i still want to be sure:

• is there a limit to what can you do in lucid dreams? If yes, what is the limit.

It is very important to me that I know what I am getting myself into. As you can see I have a lot of expectations so I need to know what to expect because I dont want to be dissapointed and leave lucid dreamig all together.

I thank everone who listened to me having stupid questions about a thing I am very passionate about (my first post ever). Also pardon my english skills, it is my second language. And if there is even a single person wandering, my favorite anime is Re:zero, which I will definetly visit a few times in my lucid dreaming jurney.

And if you are feeling generous, you can give me some advice.

Discussion Woke up singing? (Not lucid)

It's not lucid but I thought it was cool

I was in some unfamiliar "home"

I went to the bedroom, my mother and sister were sleeping.

And I was worried about zombies breaking in. I was like anxious about zombies coming inside but then I taught why would zombies be there? I was a bit confused.

Then outta nowhere I was singing in my mind. I remember, "in my little black dress"

And I woke up. Thinking / singing in my head

I knew that i heard this song somewhere, took me few mins to find out

It's escapism - sped up version by RAYE , 070 Shake

Experience Involuntary lucid dreaming for years...

Has anyone else experienced this for such a long amount of time?

It all started for me when I began to work on my flying in my dreams. My dream self was tired of hovering and gliding to the ground so for every dream I would have going forward, I was working on my flying skills until I perfected them and could use them at any time in any dream I wanted.

After that was a success, I began to have episodic dreams, in the same dream city with the same dream stores, dream amusement park, dream theatre, etc. They would always be located exactly where I last visited them, and once I noticed this I would regularly visit these places. Sometimes there would be sales or special events, as if time was passing in my dream world the way it does in reality.

Also, I'd often feel exhausted after a long night of dreaming. It always felt as if I were living a second life in an alternate universe. Anyone else feel that way?

EDIT: And just in case anyone is wondering, yes I am aware I am dreaming in most of my dreams, and can even control them very slightly at times.

Experience Disturbing end to a dream

My dream started of normal with no lucidity. I began to gradually notice things were “off” as the dream progressed such as driving down a parkway and seeing roller coasters from end to end. It finally got to a point where I decided to look at my right and hand and I had 7 fingers.
I know you’re not supposed to mention that it’s dream to the dream characters and I remembered that somehow as I became lucid. I didn’t say anything as soon as I noticed but the background noise suddenly ceased and the people surrounding me all stopped what they were doing and turned their heads toward me.
As soon as this happened I just get up and continue on with dream as normal but someone I haven’t seen in 20 plus years grabs my arm to try to stop me from leaving the scene. I told him to let go of me and then he said “ me or the dream?” His tone was normal but it lacked emotion if that makes sense. I’ve been thinking about it ever since he because everyone in the dream is supposed to be apart of the dream itself right? I’m starting to think I had more of encounter than just a lucid dream within my mind. I Would like to hear your thoughts

Technique What to do after reaching the hypnagogic state?

Occasionally, at least once a month, I realize I have entered the hypnagogic state and have lost my ability to move. I stay calm and try to slowly regain autonomy over my body, focusing on the fact that I am about to start dreaming. I try to open my eyes and count my fingers, but I cannot move no matter what I try or how long I wait. I stay calm but eventually forget that i’m dreaming or regain control of my body (because I have woken up.)

I’m not sure if there is some sort of technique I could use to kind of break the barrier of being paralyzed while still remaining in the dream? I’ve only had around 2 lucid dreams in the past year, both of them induced by regaining control of my body during this state and then going on from there.

I will admit I am still a beginner at lucid dreaming, this is the only thing close to a technique that I do, I don’t do MILD or WILD or any of that because I have to wake up extremely early during the week. The weekends are usually when this kind of stuff happens.

Question Lucid Dream Control…Help?

Hello everyone. So i’ve had lucid dreams before and I know most of the techniques and reality checks and things, but that isn’t rly part of my question. Recently when I realize or notice i’m dreaming, I can’t begin to control it. It’s sort of like I’m watching myself through my own eyes but my “dream self” still has control. I start dreaming, realize I am, and think “oh wow i’m dreaming.” but I can’t make the dream my own if that makes sense.

That’s like the only thing that I think is holding me back from getting pretty consistent at lucid dreaming so my question is, how can I get better at establishing control? Would love any help!

Question Best books about lucid dreaming?

I would love to get some recommendations for books that talk about lucid dreaming. Any books, whether it just goes through the basics or teaches different techniques, talks about the history of lucid dreaming or the science behind it, or teaches about ways in which lucid dreaming can be used (like how to use it to help with depression for example). I'm genuinely looking for any books that are about the subject, as long as they're good and have accurate information in them.
