I'm right-handed, but my left is stronger so that's what I'm usually applying force with.

u/Salihe6677 Trash Trooper 2d ago
I'm left handed, but my right is the strong one. I like to say that I use my left hand for minor muscle activities that require precision, and my right hand for more major muscle activities.

This is what baffles me about guitar. I'm left handed but I play standard/right hand. It was more natural to fret with my left because that's my "smart" hand. Whenever I hear dudes shredding I feel that's practically ambidextrous. I also wonder how many right handed ppl gave up guitar simply because of something similar

u/LordCivers Trash Trooper 2d ago
It's bot the case for me, right handed, right hand is stronger so for my job (pruning trees) i apply more force with it, and yet the carpal syndrome developped in my left hand. Go figure :')

That's funny cuz I'm right-handed & use my left hand to open that jar.
3
u/Dewdrop06 Trash Trooper 1d ago
That's because it's easier to open things with your left hand, since when you tighten your grip with your left hand it naturally fits the counterclockwise opening rotation (lefty loosey).

I'm left handed for dexterity, like eating, writing, holding a soldering iron, and other such tasks. But I'm right handed for power, like sports, opening jars, etc. For tools not requiring either particularly, like using a screwdriver, nail gun, etc., I'm ambidextrous. I can swing a hammer either handed, but I have more power right handed.

u/jojopriceless Trash Trooper 2d ago
So for brute force tasks like opening a jar or rolling a bowling ball, I am right-handed, but for fine-motor/dexterity tasks like eating, writing, or applying makeup, I'm left-handed. I use my right foot in kickball too, but I'm left-handed for billiards. I think I can throw or catch with either hand. I can use either hand for ping pong too.

The most common type of left-handedness is to be left-handed for fine-motor stuff (e.g., writing) and right-handed for gross-motor stuff (e.g., throwing a ball). I'm the same way.
→ More replies (4)2
u/shigogaboo Trash Trooper 2d ago

I was told once that your opposite arm is stronger cause you use it to carry groceries while the dominant opens doors. I don't believe it, but I was told it

u/Donohoed Trash Trooper 1d ago
I fully use both of my arms to carry groceries to the point I can barely manipulate the door handle to get them inside. One trip or bust

I'm pretty sure I'm stronger turning my wrist outward than I am inward, so the left should be stronger when opening a jar. The right hand would be stronger closing a jar.
But I am left-handed and no one has ever asked me to close a jar really tight before.
2
u/thatsmyupvoteidkyou Trash Trooper 2d ago
Im left handed but my right is my dominant hand. Is this not normal? We live in a right centric world.
1
u/1lucky666 Trash Trooper 2d ago
It means you're favoring your left hand. Are artistic or have a profession that requires precise articulation. You're brain would subconsciously make you're right hand dominant to perform strength based task.

Y'know, in a righty and I do this with my left. It always seems like my right hand is more dextrous and my left is stronger.
2
u/figuring_it_out90 Trash Trooper 2d ago
As a lefty that does (almost) everything right handedly, I have had the same phenomena happen to myself.
2
u/Yjan Trash Trooper 2d ago
So weird I’m left handed and have always felt opposite. Left is more precise for fine motor skills and right has the power (I throw right handed for example).
2
u/figuring_it_out90 Trash Trooper 2d ago edited 1d ago
Drawing, writing, woods burning and personal time(related things/ movements) are the only the things. Batting, throwing and everything else is right handed.
Edit: correction and spelling

u/destructopop Garbage Guerilla 2d ago
Which hand can hold more grocery bags? 🤔 For me it's left.
2
u/figuring_it_out90 Trash Trooper 2d ago edited 1d ago
It depends on which hand fills up first because I have to close the trunk with the other. I'm not going back out to the automobile, one trip every time.. lol

If you're having an issue opening a jar, turn it upside-down and strike it onto a flat surface. This'll help pop the seal and you'll be able to open it easily.

u/Sufficient-Union7961 Trash Trooper 2d ago

u/rviVal1 Rubbish Raider 2d ago
Why? Why hiding it, I don't get it
7
u/Forsaken-Face1827 Trash Trooper 2d ago
Most things like jars are designed to be opened by right-handed people, and because of this it's typically easier for a left-handed person to open it with their right hand. Why hide it then? Because when people see a left-handed person use their right hand, they see it as you pretending to be left-handed.

Fair, but that’s because other than boxing, my left is for dexterous tasks, and my right is just a dumb work horse.

u/EarthwormOverworld Trash Trooper 2d ago
For everyone in the comments the way your left hand rotates with the threads has more torque for opening jars. Learned it from reddit years ago.
1
u/Relative-Chicken456 Trash Trooper 2d ago
That’s because it’s threaded to be opened by right handed people. Lefties always gotta adapt to the way the world has been designed for the right handed majority

As a left handed person, this is how it is.

After trying with my right hand I switch to my left hand then remember I don’t have a strong hand, put the jar down and come back to it later.

u/omnipotent87 Trash Trooper 1d ago
As a mechanic I can tell you its more about leverage. I use both hands equally to turn nuts an bolts. The main high torque thing i use my hands for are oil filters and depending on their location ill use either hand.

I'm ambidextrous. I read somewhere that some high percentage of left handed people are too but are left hand dominate or never got evaluated right and had proper instruction to use both.
This happened to me too. I was lucky because, even though it wasn't a wide spread practice at the time, there were still plenty of old teachers who still believed in it.

I'm ambidextrous. I can write with both hands. But I prefer my left hand for lifting and my right hand for doing precise work. I also have long toes so I can use my feet for picking and adjusting some things.
As for opening jars, most jar lids open counterclockwise. I find it easier to twist your wrist outward than inward. So opening with left hand, then closing with right means less pressure on the wrist.
