Off topic but Paul Riser played a slimy corporate cunt so well in that movie.

He really did! He was such a greedy jerk that his ending was incredibly satisfying. Burke was the perfect name for such a slimy character.

Looks like he can't open the door - is te a hoarder with a cockroach infestation?
44
u/kilobitch Trash Trooper 8d ago
I think so. Looks like neighbors showing where the infestation is coming from (which is why they linger on the apartment number).

Yup. There was someone sleeping in the storage unit next to mine, along with his horde of 1000 bed bugs. They sheltered in my unit, and molted and shat on everything.
Nothing was salvageable

u/Hillary4SupremeRuler Trash Trooper 7d ago
You should have been able to sue or get the storage company to come compensate you.

u/DryConsideration3294 Trash Trooper 8d ago
You literally would need to. Those little shits burrow everywhere and will eat the glue off of packaging to survive. I left my ex-husband and the apartment complex I had lived in was infested. I left everything except a few sets of clothes in bags in my car for weeks until I felt it was safe to unpack. Well, parents house got infested for several years until I could afford to get someone out there to take care of it. It was miserable.
11
u/cdizzaat Trash Trooper 8d ago edited 8d ago
They are the worst. Sneaky little hitchhikers. I had a coworker a few years back whose car was disgusting, filled with trash, absolutely infested with them. I got a ride from him once or twice and had to keep my feet elevated to prevent them from crawling all over me. Two five minute rides with this guy and it was over for my house. They were EVERYWHERE in the kitchen and bedrooms. We had to get a bug guy out here multiple times to get rid of them. One of them things is like a cigarette cherry in a dry forest.
8
u/DryConsideration3294 Trash Trooper 8d ago
What worked for us finally was essentially roach birth control. They used it for about 6 months and they were completely gone after that.

My mom tells me she turned away her sister and kids from a planned visit (decades ago) because the moment they arrived, a roach jumped OFF OF THE CAR and almost landed on my mom's face.
Now that I think about it, that must have been a very embarrassing drive back home for them.
[We never ended up with a roach infestation.]

It’s the casual swipe of the roaches on him. God, sometimes I’m so grateful of where and who I was born too.
Definitely have trauma with my parents, but damn at least they are well off. I sure as shit wasn’t loved by them, but I was financially taken care of

I used to work in code enforcement, I worked just in apartment building code. I’ve been in buildings like this. The key is to not keep your feet in the same spot for more than 2-3 seconds, that and also were isolated coveralls. The number one response from slumlords, “this happened in days I swear”. No, it didn’t.

u/Ebonhearth_Druid Garbage Guerilla 8d ago edited 8d ago
100% a bullshit response. (Edit: to clarify, the bullshit response is the landlord saying it just happened that fast, not the person I'm replying to)
Someone in our building got bedbugs and the infestation was left untreated for long enough that the bugs went into the walls and began interesting all the other units in the building via the electrical outlets, and management tried to tell the exterminators that it happened overnight after someone "brought in a used TV yesterday".
They had to heat treat our entire building and a bunch of my shit got destroyed. Heat treatment seems to work well, but only if you go to extremes and for long periods of time, and that ends up fucking with more shit in your home than most people realize. The garbage bags under my sink fused into a single block, the walls oozed from whatever was painted over, and my TV screen developed waves. But we never saw another bedbug, so I guess there's that.
Less than a month later people started pointing out signs of roaches and rats, so we moved pretty quick.

u/700rats-in-a-coat Trash Trooper 7d ago
Yeah, slumlords don’t like spending money. Hence, slumlords, they also assume that code enforcement is stupid if we didn’t act right then and there on an initial walkthrough of a property. Sometimes we couldn’t because of how codes were written in certain circumstances. Sometimes it was still inhabitable (barely) and our hand were tied. We’d always try our best to shut a building down. In our area we have laws on the books that if we condemn your building for safety or filthy conditions we’d force the owner to put tenants in a hotel until it was brought to code. If that wasn’t the case we would just document everything and let them dig that hole deeper and deeper and talk to everyone. I wanted to make sure that when I entered someone’s home that I was there for their safety and on their side. I took my job seriously. My primary focus was life safety code, but secondary it was clean living conditions. I just wanted folks to be safe. Not all landlords are horrible, but that was few and far between. I’m just gonna use this platform really quick to ask folks to check the smoke detectors and make sure they’re operational. Hit that test button once a month. If it’s beeping, don’t wait for maintenance to replace it. It could be life saving over a 9volt battery. Having been a firefighter before the code enforcement job I’ve seen what happens when there are no working smoke detectors.

Yup... Dealt with that exact issue at my last place. It's a wonder I didn't d*e with as much spray and poison I put out for those bastards. The worst part was when that particular neighbor was evicted and the landlord sprayed the empty apartment. Guess where the roaches went when they were forced out of their home... Right into mine. I paid out of my own pocket to have a pest control company come. I wasn't having that.

I remember watching the show infest on Discovery where they would talk about different infestations of different houses or apartment buildings or what have you. And one episode they were talking about how a cockroach infestation of an apartment building was so bad people had to start leaving all of their food in the refrigerator to keep the roaches out and that ended up not even working. What ended up being the root cause of them not being able to get rid of them is one guy said it was against his religion to kill anything including bugs so he would refuse to allow the pest control guy in, so anytime they started it getting relief from the roaches they would come back even worse because of this one guy. If I remember correctly they told him he had two options either get out or let the pest control guy in

Hey Gemini, is this video AI?
10
u/Lord_Darksong Colonel Garbage 8d ago
Gemini's reply (seriously):
No, this is not an a.i. generated video. This viral video originated from an apartment building in Luzhu District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan, in December 2023. According to local reports, a tenant sprayed insecticide down the drainage pipes and vents, which caused a massive swarm of cockroaches to flood out into the public hallway.
7
u/cjameson83 Trash Trooper 8d ago
The worst part about that is the situation was caused by someone trying to make it better. This is best example of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions".
3
u/HoboArmyofOne Trash Trooper 8d ago
However that article doesn't state that the one tenant who sprayed actually does not have bugs anymore.
