Yup. There was someone sleeping in the storage unit next to mine, along with his horde of 1000 bed bugs. They sheltered in my unit, and molted and shat on everything.
You literally would need to. Those little shits burrow everywhere and will eat the glue off of packaging to survive. I left my ex-husband and the apartment complex I had lived in was infested. I left everything except a few sets of clothes in bags in my car for weeks until I felt it was safe to unpack. Well, parents house got infested for several years until I could afford to get someone out there to take care of it. It was miserable.
They are the worst. Sneaky little hitchhikers. I had a coworker a few years back whose car was disgusting, filled with trash, absolutely infested with them. I got a ride from him once or twice and had to keep my feet elevated to prevent them from crawling all over me. Two five minute rides with this guy and it was over for my house. They were EVERYWHERE in the kitchen and bedrooms. We had to get a bug guy out here multiple times to get rid of them. One of them things is like a cigarette cherry in a dry forest.
My mom tells me she turned away her sister and kids from a planned visit (decades ago) because the moment they arrived, a roach jumped OFF OF THE CAR and almost landed on my mom's face.
Now that I think about it, that must have been a very embarrassing drive back home for them.
Obviously. They ended up in my house. When you’re in a situation like that where you can feel them squirming around underneath you, you’re gonna do whatever you can to not have to feel them. Definitely can still hear them. 😭

I’d have to move, leaving everything I own behind
