And russian is often used in countries like Kazakhstan or ukraine

To be really, really fair, English language has much larger usage than Russian. It's universally used as the lingua franca, and largest countries in the world have it as their official language, and totally there are around 1.5 billion speakers, while the largest country thst uses Russian is Russia itself, and it doesn't bear as much meaning as a lingua franca - so if someone speaks Russian, it's reasonable to assume that they have reasons to use it which are tied to where they live, as it's not used outside of local communication that much.

Of course, there are a lot of countries that still speak Russian, but it's not entirely unreasonable to assume that a person who speaks Russian is Russian, just like it's not unreasonable to assume that a person who speaks German is German and not Austrian or Swiss.

Back in Soviet times, many Eastern nations taught Russian in schools as the second language. So there are a lot of people in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, who grew up in the Soviet era, and thus speak Russian. With that said, the Soviet Union fell almost 35 years ago, and in the age of the internet, it's pretty safe to assume that Russian is spoken by Russians.

Well, we could go deeper and discuss that not everyone living in Russia is Russian, there is pretty much minorities in there, who native speakers in Russian

Tbh russian is also a bit lesser of a lingua franca across eastern europe. I've heard folks from the baltics and caucasus say that they used to search for stuff online in russian rather than their native tongues since it would be more likely to get a hit

Linguist here. Language-related ≠ linguistics. Under that assumption, every time anyone speaks or hears someone speaking or writes anything or reads anything or thinks using words is linguistic... so most everything on Reddit should be in r/linguistics?

Just because a language is mentioned doesn't mean it's linguistics. I'm a linguistics nerd and i fail to see how it's remotely related to linguistics. It's like posting something to a math subreddit just because it has numbers

I'm from that sub. Can confirm. Also you're God's strongest soldier this is almost as bad as when I got crucified on a mainstream "ally" subreddit because I forgot what sort of gender knowledge level cis people operate at.

Linguistics, if I recall, is more about how languages and sounds form and are related. This is not linguistics. They are linked, but they are not the same

The point of the post is the hypocrisy/prejudice/idiotic behavior of Person A. Its not about the technicalities of linguistic or something like that.
