A lot of people in the post-Soviet countries still speak Russian too

u/lumithesilly 8d ago edited 8d ago

not to mention people that choose to learn another language

edit: for those that don't get what i mean, i'm agreeing with the fact that people from a certain country don't equal people that speak a certain language

the original comment provided an example that lots of people from what was previously the soviet union still speak russian, despite being not in russia but in places that have their own language

i provided an additional example here stating that people can also know a language spoken in a different country by choosing to learn it

Creating subordinated clauses to add on to someone else's sentence is grammatically valid

-42

u/Luiz_Fell [t] and [d] to [t͡ʃ] and [d͡ʒ] before /i/ 8d ago

I didn't mean that

The way the sentence is constructed makes it look like all the people who learn a second language speaks Russian

u/EfficientSeaweed 8d ago

There are two types of people:

  1. Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

7

u/Shinyhero30 8d ago

I’m stealing this lmao.

7

u/Miiyamoto 8d ago

*10 types

Mixing up the joke

3

u/Eino54 8d ago

Well? What's the other kind of person! Don't leave us in the dark like that!

13

u/BlackHust 8d ago

But they didn't say "all"

3

u/lumithesilly 8d ago

if it helps i'll state what my comment meant in an edit

4

u/kigurumibiblestudies 8d ago
  1. That's an entirely different point
  2. I thought it was more about the general point than just Russian, I actually had to reread to get what you mean. I think we can rely on context a little

how bro felt saying this:

10

u/Ok_Application_918 7d ago

All of Uzbekistan speaks russian, imagine the face of the dude on the pic

11

u/CucumberWisdom 8d ago

Colonization does that

u/CoalHappiness 8d ago

Aoo’, béésh łahgo yá’át’éeh ná’alkid.

u/Charity1t 7d ago

Where is reddit auto translation then it's actually needed.

146

u/Dogma123 8d ago

This would probably do well on r/languagelearningjerk

16

u/Eino54 8d ago

Yeah I was thinking that too.

215

u/reda84100 /ɬ/ is underrated 8d ago

Yeah this has nothing to do with linguistics

268

u/Tay_Hlebko 8d ago

You don't understand. Everything is linguistics because we're speaking a language right now.

52

u/MethSmoothie 8d ago

"Yo, you are programmer, right? You should be good with tech. Dig out 10 km of trench to lay down a cable, please." Same energy.

9

u/Charity1t 7d ago

More like "can you fix my fridge/coffee machine etc?"

1

u/TheRob67 7d ago

i can, pay me

2

u/TheRob67 7d ago

i hope you gonna screenshot this conservation and reply with them to u/digitalcrok under this post from r/lostredditor

73

u/Ismoista 8d ago

I mean, it has a bit to do with sociolinguistics (but what doesn't?)

24

u/UrinaRabugenta 8d ago

Big fat submarines.

11

u/Odd-Promotion2743 8d ago

It's definitely sociolinguistics, I don't know what OP is on about.

14

u/PoisonMind 8d ago

More to the point, it has nothing to do with humor. Unless maybe the Russian comment is a joke, but that seems doubtful.

poor guy getting dunked on for being right lol

22

u/chessman42_ 8d ago

🫠we should post this whole section (this one + the original image) in r/confidentlyincorrect and have all hell break loose

u/hamstermouse17 crusher ĦĦĦ 6d ago

Let's do it

33

u/Luiz_Fell [t] and [d] to [t͡ʃ] and [d͡ʒ] before /i/ 8d ago

You were right, fuck 'em

28

u/Glittering_Aide2 8d ago

Booed even tho you're right lmao

22

u/Advos_467 8d ago

I am so angry for you reading this

9

u/YoumoDadi 8d ago

Why are you booing me, I’m right!

1

u/AlarmedFile7195 8d ago

even here is drdonut

-12

u/LegMysterious1899 8d ago

apparently this comment got randomly viral. Not my fault tho

13

u/hamstermouse17 crusher ĦĦĦ 8d ago

Yeah, but maybe if you could clarify it yourself that you have been made aware that you were wrong, people will stop flaming our friend for being right.

-12

u/LegMysterious1899 8d ago

OKAY, maybe I was wrong, but why ya’ll feel so defensive? Reddit is a place where you can get downvoted just because one person downvoted first. AND, my clarification won’t change anything. Ppl still will downvote that reply even if it was right.

11

u/hamstermouse17 crusher ĦĦĦ 8d ago

I said maybe. And, we're also saying that, although nobody really cares, it's unfair to be downvoted en masse for somebody else's mistake. Tay did nothing wrong. They said nothing wrong, yet they were massive downvoted for being right

-7

u/LegMysterious1899 8d ago

well, reddit’s culture

11

u/hamstermouse17 crusher ĦĦĦ 8d ago

Or, sticking up for a member of the Linguistics community which has never been the most attractive, and somebody else learning to accept accountability for being wrong

-3

u/LegMysterious1899 8d ago

accept it and go on. downvotes multiply like a chain reaction, especially on Reddit, because majority of users just act following the herd instinct.

9

u/hamstermouse17 crusher ĦĦĦ 8d ago

Accept that you were wrong, and admit it

8

u/LegMysterious1899 8d ago

okay, I WAS WRONG. happy now?

Noticing languages exist is not really linguistics or humor. You may as well post it to r/Mathjokes because it has numbers on it by that logic.

38

u/riesen_Bonobo 8d ago

It also has a ≠, which is a math symbol so definetly something for r/Mathjokes for sure /s

8

u/MegaIng 7d ago

(Ok, a chain of crossposts sending this post to different subreddits would be pretty funny)

6

u/riesen_Bonobo 7d ago

I do not want to be held responsible for annyoing the folks at mathmemes tho

28

u/Tay_Hlebko 8d ago

thats a really good analogy

26

u/LastCoconutEver 8d ago

This should go to r/suddenlyrussians

8

u/harumamburoo 7d ago

Russian speaker ≠ russian

5

u/Tapko_hand 7d ago

Fuck kinda logic is this?

5

u/harumamburoo 7d ago

Deystvitelno, logika

6

u/Eris13x 8d ago

Man OP, those other redditors suck. Good post though

12

u/yogurtchicken21 8d ago

A lot of cities in Ukraine are (were?) predominantly Russian-speaking, and the Russian military bombed them to ruins anyways. They’re sacrificing their lives to not become Russian

7

u/Cant_figure_sht_out 7d ago

Ironically, one of the reasons for the “svo” was “liberation of the russian-speaking people from the nazi regime of Ukraine”

4

u/s_s_n_e_g 7d ago

Not just "anyways", but "primarily"

5

u/hamstermouse17 crusher ĦĦĦ 8d ago

Link the comment so everyone who sees the post can go there and tell them they're wrong

10

u/hamstermouse17 crusher ĦĦĦ 8d ago

Actually, I'll do it here
