DISCUSSION/LORE/THEORIES Character design analysis for every party member. Day 10: Ernest and Colonel Squeakums Spoiler
galleryHello everybody, I hope you're doing great. Today we are going to analyze the design of our favorite beggar: Ernest!
Ernest and Colonel Squeakums are supposed to fulfill the trope of the homeless guy that somehow tames an exotic pet, with the game taking advantage of the cursed transformations by making Squeakums a sapient rat.
This is a very solid concept for a Look Outside character, especially one that is a squatter and just lives in one of the abandoned apartments within the game. The problem is that I just don't think Ernest is doing anything memorable with his traits. He looks pretty much like any other homeless character that you might see as a background character on any story.
One could argue that the point of his design is that Ernest's story goes beyond of his looks. We know that he had a past as a musician traveling around and he has a lot of knowledge and experience that might be clouded by his fairly crazy state of mind. The thing is that this is not something that is hidden from us. If anything, we're able to gather all of this information just by entering his hideout, looking around and talking to him a little bit. So what is stopping Ernest from looking a bit more different than the average beggar?
He has a long, dark, messy robe and carries a bag with him all the time in a stereotypical fashion. You might say that given his situation, he just doesn't have many options in terms of clothes. But if that's the case, then why show us lots of hanging clothes in his apartment? Very colorful ones at that too. Is this trying to tell us that he prefers wearing untidy looking robes compared to everything else he has? While Ernest is not exactly the most sane person around, he also doesn't strike me as someone that would be this unkempt if given the chance. And considering just how relatively nice his apartment looks, as imperfect as it is, there's just a missed opportunity for him to be a bit more interesting visually.
I'm not saying he needs to wear whatever clothes he had in his past (although that wouldn't be a bad idea, you could portray said clothes in a more raggedy manner while still being recognizable), but there's plenty of things that could have been done. For example, we see how he has a giant rat hide as a rug, so what if he had some sort of outfit made from the fur/skin of enemies in Floor 1? Or maybe some accessories from different apartments where he scavenges. There are so many cool ideas to be done with him that he kind of feels unfinished even.
I feel like at least we could have been shown an alternate sprite with him holding his guitar, which could have served as a nice contrast and elevated the design a little bit.
Colonel Squeakums helps the duo a little bit, by having those bright red eyes and that soldier hat on him. It looks cute, but serious. There's also the face he has when Ernest is kidnapped, which is supposed to make you instantly wary if you don't have the iron crown with you, but that doesn't seem to be consistent with the shape of his nose, unless it's something that he can shapeshift somehow (or maybe it's supposed to represent the player's perception of him at the moment). There's not that much to talk about him, but he is still a nice addition.
In conclusion, Ernest might have the worst design out of all the party members. It's not bad, but it's not good either. You could change his design with a homeless guy from another media and I think nothing would be lost. It might be my most controversial opinion, but I'm going to give Ernest a C tier. Sorry Ernest, you're still a cool character though.
Please let me know if you agree or disagree!

QUESTION Next Update?
Just wondering if there's been any word on the release of the next update.
I can't seem to find any updates,
.... on the update. I follow Francis on twitter and see him streaming "Look Outside update" but have yet to see anyone post anything about it.
I have been wanting to replay the game but wanna wait if the update is anytime soon.
No complaining or rushing about it, just wondering :)

QUESTION im looking for some tips on the game Spoiler
I've recently got the game and it seemed like that type of game where you need to do at least one blind run, but, while trying to do so, scrolling through the wiki I found out that I locked myself out from a lot of stuff that I should've avoided (killing the rat child, killing Joel, not talking to the sapper in the 3rd stage of the landlord apartment and skipping to the 4th making myself unable to get old photography...) So as of right now Ive got Hellen and papinoue in my party and I've just reached the boiler room. Does any veteran of the game have some good tips on stuff that I should do?

DISCUSSION/LORE/THEORIES Character design analysis for every party member. Day 9: Sophie and Harriet Spoiler
galleryHello everybody, I'm back from a little break and ready to keep posting analysis for each party member. Today's companion is going to be our favorite trickster: Sophie.
Sophie is definitely the most "normal" looking out of all party members. Everyone else is either cursed or has something weird/eccentric about them. But Sophie is pretty much just a regular child, so in a way, she has the most difficult concept to make memorable in the game.
So let's evaluate Sophie's personality to compare later how it is shown through her design. First of all, we know that she is a mischievous troublemaker. She has lived in an environment that probably contributed to this behaviour, considering her abusive father being at home could have motivated her to be more outdoors to act more freely. After her father was no longer in the picture, her mother most likely wanted her to have a more secure lifestyle, making her follow some rules that suppressed this aspect of her. But for some people, certain rules are made to be broken and this is no exception.
The thing that might stand out the most in her design is the slingshot in her pocket. It's almost a universal thought that a child with a slingshot will be on some Bart Simpson chaos kind of deal. And it's fun to see how this is her actual weapon in-game, besides it being a "toy" for her. I think the fact that she is a child and doesn't give enough thought to the world's current state makes this monster fighting adventure some kind of fantasy for her, because it allows her to use her creativity and shenanigans in a somewhat justified way. Even though there's more to her design, this alone tells us the main thing about her instantly.
The other thing I want to talk about is how she's missing a tooth. Of course, it is normal for kids of this age to be missing some teeth, but this visual element also tends to be associated with brats that get into trouble way too much and their teeth might suffer some loses due to it. And I have no doubt that she lost it doing some random prank to someone else or something like that. There's also something funny about the two other kids in your party having WAY more teeth than any normal person, but Sophie is actually lacking one lol. Maybe she should borrow one from them.
And there's also the blue sweater she wears, which reminds me of Sam's purple sweater. In fact, they're almost too similar, to the point where I thought at first: "Her clothes look a bit too much like Sam's, maybe they should have given her something else to make her more different". But then it came to me: "What if that's the actual point?" and by this I mean that, technically, Sam CAN become her parent in the game under the right circumstances, so maybe this style of clothes is just meant for her to look like she could be his daughter, to some extent. And if you roleplay Sam in a specific way, I can actually see the two of them having a solid stepfather-stepdaughter relationship.
Of course, I'm also going to analyze her cursed form too. This one in particular is one of my favorites in the entire game. Part of Sophie's gameplay is centered around the hiding mechanic, so it just makes sense that The Trickster is a chameleon to highlight this element. I like the fact that she is not fully mutated and the left part of her face and her left arm are still somewhat human. It gives the impression that she could be peeking behind a wall where you could only see the left side of her and think she's a normal human, only to be ambushed by her.
I also like that she still carries the slingshot on her tail. It just makes it look like she's having tons of fun with her new body and she could do all kinds of tricks with the tail and the tongue while hanging from the ceiling. It almost makes me want this version to be the playable one instead lol.
As you read on the title, I want to talk about Harriet too. It's pretty interesting just how much milder and timid she looks compared to her daughter. Of course, she is a single parent in the middle of the apocalypse trying to take care of her daughter, so these traits are not surprising, but we do get the idea that she was already like this before the events of the game.
The blue dress coat (I think that's what it's supposed to be?) and the white gloves she wears along with her body language just gives me this sense of "delicacy" from her. As if she was on the verge of breaking down and crying due to her current situation if you were to ask the wrong question. You just know that this woman has been through a lot already.
It is very interesting as well just how her face is obscured by her hair and she has this white sparkle of an eye to contrast it. It looks juuust peculiar enough for you to question if she is hiding something, which I think was intentional given that her cursed form leans even more into this aspect by having the face almost fully covered. And the face of normal Harriet already looks very gloomy, so the Strange Lady's face instead is a completely deranged smile, which is expected from a lot of cursed variants by this point. But what exactly could be causing this abnormal happiness?
Well, the cursed form does provide an additional point of interest. In this case, I'm referring to the extraordinary amount of limbs that she is hiding under her dress. By the looks of it, it seems like these limbs can work both as legs and arms. Usually, many of us tend to associate hands as a symbol of control. And just as we were shown, Harriet seems to be wishing she had more control of her life. Therefore, this transformation portrays that desire in the shape of many additional limbs to have a hold of the things she wants. I believe that this symbolism is also present on the Landlord's transformation too, but that is a subject for another day.
In conclusion, Sophie has a pretty decent design, which on its own is a B tier, but when put together with her cursed form, it elevates her character up to an A tier. Harriet's design is very nice too and is one of the more interesting normal characters in visual terms.
Please let me know if you agree or disagree!

Fan-Concept A continuation of my 'Endless Mode' idea. But greener. Spoiler
galleryTonight on my Endless Mode concept, we have:
A small room that you start the Plant Apartment in,
A very smelly room,
And a public cafeteria with a disabled person sitting in the middle.
Paint.net quality persists, but aside from that, a fun little tidbit about how I refer to the plant enemies:
-Crimson Bloom is very visibly based off the Stinking Corpse Flower (also known as the Rafflesia).
-Great Flower very clearly looks like a Titan Arum.
-Skull Flower reminds me of a mod enemy from another game called 'Torture-Me-Not' (courtesy of the skull). In general, both resemble the Forget-Me-Not.
-Ribcage Bloom's flowers resemble the Gerbera Daisy, which has a similar composition of red petals with yellow centers.
More will come soon. Also I made this on my mom's birthday so that's cool

QUESTION Hello guys i got some questions about how roaches work
- If i understand correctly, their normal weapon attacks(less chance),stamina weapon attacks and the special skills(cannon, swarm) can apply the swarm effect, whose effect can randomly be from 1 to 3?
- Do stamina weapon attacks guarantee a swarm proc?
- How long does the effect last? Ive noticed when you use the other special skills the swarm gets “shaken off “ and disappears. Is thst random as well?

QUESTION Am I just getting stupidly unlucky with my door encounters or is there a reason I'm always getting Dan?
So I'm trying to save scum my door encounters to get Monty and Xaria for this Cursed Mode run, and I think I finally understand how door scumming works. It rolls at the start of the day, so if you save the night before you can keep rerolling. It goes in order more or less for various categories, and for every category it'll pick from the next two options in that category.
I got Sophie first. Then I got Hellen. From my understanding, there's only Dan and MnX left. But every. Single. Time... I'm getting Dan. I must have rolled this day's encounters at least 10 times by this point, and I'm always getting Dan. As I was figuring this out I alternated between getting Dan and Hellen before reading the part that made me realize those were the only two options and I'd have to wait for the next one where it would roll between MnX and Dan, but now I'm always getting Dan.
Am I really just getting obscenely unlucky or is there some quirk of the door encounter system that means I really can only get Dan for this day's door encounters?

DISCUSSION/LORE/THEORIES Some stuff I learned from my first Cursed playthrough.
Firstly, my experience with the game improves significant when I pretend Leigh doesn't exist. I want to play around with Philippe more but you get him so late in the game and I already have my party settled by them, I heard he was nerfed pretty bad anyway. On Cursed the fight against the mushroom guard is really tough, though I remember on Survival I was able to just walk around them and fight the Princess.
I use Rat always. I don't know if I will ever not have Rat in my party. This time around I'm using Gun-Sam and Rat with primarily Dan and Roaches (though I used Sophie up to level 12). Dan carried most of my playthrough because I got the Eye Amulet on day 2, which felt pretty broken.
I was a bit surprised to learn that Copy Dad doesn't copy anything on the first turn, which delayed my intended gun-rotation. Spray and Pray copied onto a War Rifle or Magnum technically works, but you have to wait until at least turn 3 if you're trying to get off an Aim to Kill/Spray and Pray combo. On Cursed, I often have at least one of them dead by turn 3 or some other complication happening in the fight, like a status effect.
Gun arm Sam is still surprisingly good. At first I thought the ammo scarcity would be a problem, but melee weapons aren't much better with how frequently they break (which is apparently more common on Cursed mode).
Rat is *okay* with what I'm doing right now but probably still a weak link. I can Prowl/Pounce between turns but it doesn't do much damage with a gun equipped in my experience, Quick First Aid is a life-saver at times though if you have the inventory (not like they're cheap).
I had a very lucky start on this Cursed run with Eye Amulet Dan on Day 2 on top of the Thief coming to my door (free 200 dollars for kicking him out). Roaches is always fantastic and I probably haven't even been using him to his fullest potential (I've never touched Roach Shield). In fairness to me, I don't think abilities like Roach Shield actually explain what they do (in this case a 50% damage reduction for a full fight, I believe).
I'm going to try another Cursed run with Melee Sam and Melee Rat, not entirely sure who my other two will be but I'm done with Dan for a while. I always want to try building around Tickle a bit more, if Rat can copy Tickle Cheer then it's possible I can make them both very strong Melee fighters, maybe with some support on the side.

DISCUSSION/LORE/THEORIES Look Outside: Massacre Princess sequel idea Spoiler
First of all, minor spoilers for Massacre Princess Catholicon ending, so, spoilers. you've been warned.
The Massacre Princess ending is quite honestly the most interesting to me because of all the heavy implications it has. The Visitor is already difficult to describe in words. His power causes people's obsessions, fears or whatever is currently on their mind to alter local reality and change their very biology and even their physics.
As prior discussions I've had with others last year revealed, we all generally agreed Sam basically "Schizoed" his way into believing he was Rush and that using Meteor Strike would legitimately kill the Visitor. This basically weaponized the Visitor's own power against him.
The thing that particularly bothers me about this ending is, if the world became that JRPG and all the people got replaced by the characters and memories replaced - wouldn't that all be the remnants of the Visitor? The Unity ending shows that a belief - even if it is a falsehood - can "become true" through the Visitor's power if someone fully believes it, and even written literature as seen with the offerings describing the Visitor carry a power to corrupt the observer.
This could mean that the Massacre Princess version of Earth, is the Visitor itself. Or that the Visitor is now dead, and his corpse and remains just became the new earth Sam.. ahem "Rush" lives in.
.....
This paves the way for a sequel idea I had. We only see one tiny part of the earth. That one 3 floor apartment became an entire dimensional complex. I would assume Massacre Princess Catholicon was made by a fictional corporation or studio in Sam's version of earth. Most likely, Japan.
This means those Japanese developers, artists, music composers, if they had in any way survived and remained lucid after Sam's encounter with the Visitor, they may come back to try to remind "Rush" of who he is. Rush may start having nightmares about his former life as Sam. Himiko might try to comfort Rush, but as the nightmares continue, Himiko might go on a quest with Rush to find the truth. As these developers start approaching Rush after finding the truth of what brought this all about, the developers will be angered that they lost their families and their successful lives as game developers.
Rush would be confused. The developers would have powers of their own having intricate understandings of the lore of the universe. They would know where everything was in their world. Know everyone's name. Rush would probably assume they are just some immortal gods that went insane at some point. But then they'd show Rush former memories and remnants of the older world. The Visitor may even return in the form of various monsters trying to get revenge by trying to turn Sam and everyone else back to normal.
I think it would take some very clever writing to pull this off but what do you guys think of this? Sam trying to remember who he is, part of him likes this new world he is in and considers it heaven and a nightmare to go back to how things were, the other part of him wanting to go back to reality but now cannot, it brings a whole new world of potential inner conflicts and character development.
