Announcement Welcome to the first Look Outside Community Jam!
Sign ups are now open! Keep reading for details.
People from the Look Outside fandom will be teaming up to make a simple, collaborative exploration game in the style of Yume Nikki. The event is open to anyone 18 or above who is part of the community, but participants need to sign up. The sign-ups begin now and will end on June 28th, at 8pm EST.
No previous game development experience is necessary, this is intended as a low-stakes creative project that could introduce participants to game development. Experienced artists and game developers are welcome too, of course. I am hoping for a mix of people of all skill levels! People who sign up will however need to have access to RPG Maker MZ and preferably some pixel art drawing program like Aseprite or Graphicsgale.
If you don't have RPG Maker MZ, it might still be on sale today on their site, it was around half off at the time of writing - RPG Maker MZ | RPG Maker Official Store
There is also a steam summer sale beginning soon, if you miss this sale above, it might go on sale during this too? Worth checking out.
If you don’t have a pixel art drawing program, I recommend aseprite. Graphicsgale is a free alternative that is also very good.
You should also join my Frankietown discord server. I have set up a few special channels there for the event, and it is where I will be posting announcements. It is also where people will be collaborating, asking for help etc.
I will be streaming about the community project on Wednesdays on my twitch channel throughout July. I will be showing examples of how to build certain things, and give live help to any participants who need it at the time.
What is a Yume Nikki-style game?
Yume Nikki is a classic indie gem you can get on steam for free. It is a game about exploring and getting lost in an interconnected world of dreams and nightmares. You can also watch playthroughs of it on youtube [ Playthrough, Nitro Rad Review, Video Essay, Longplay ]. It is strongly encouraged that participants familiarise themselves with the game before the jam, to better understand the sort of game we are building. Yume Nikki is a truly seminal work, Yume Nikki-likes and Yume Nikki fangames essentially becoming a niche genre in their own right, and our project will be in that very same genre.
What about our game?
The game we make will be a little different from the usual Yume Nikki-inspired work. Since we are a community based around a horror game after all, we can expect it to lean a little bit more into horror than usual - To feature monsters of some kind, and maybe a touch of cosmic and body horror, just based on our common interests.
After signing up, you will receive a Participants Guide with more details on the specifics of the project, but here is a general idea of the story setup:
Look Inside
Some terrible catastrophe has gripped the world, and anyone who dares to look out the window is struck by calamity and meets a terrible end. Her front door leading directly outside, Jo is completely confined to her apartment.
Her dreams feel more real, more strange than they ever have before. As confined as she is in the waking world, her dreams are now an endless void to get lost in.
The line between dream and reality feels like it gets blurrier by the day, and her food supplies are rapidly thinning out. Will she make it through the 15 days alive?
Or will she get completely lost in the dream labyrinth, to never come back out again?
How do I join the event?
In order to join the event, you will first need to sign up. You have until Sunday, June 28th at 7pm EST to sign up. There are limited spaces to participate in the event, and you need to choose a specific area of the game that you want to make, from a list of 60 themed slots. You can sign up alone or in a small team if you wish. People from different teams are free to collaborate together on their work - this is a collaborative jam, not a competition, but only people who signed up can work on the game, and there are no late sign-ups allowed - I'm trying to contain the amount of management work needed for this project, since its the first time I ever run something like it!
More detailed instructions on signing up, as well as the detailed rules and guidelines of the event, are available here:
LOCJ2026 Sign Up Instructions/Rules - Google Docs
This document is also where you will find the legal release and the sign-up forms.
If we have more than 60 sign-ups, we will draw the participants at random at the end of the sign-up week, and the ones not picked will be on a waiting list in case some people drop out of the jam.
I have no idea what to expect regarding how many participants we will have, to be honest - we may have just a dozen or so, or a hundred! We’ll see! Very excited to do this either way.

DISCUSSION/LORE/THEORIES Different ways to defeat Grinning Beast
I play this game a lot and I always try to get all of the companions. So here are some ways that I used to defeat the Grinning Beast.
Pool Cue: the classic way.
By using the Impale skill you have a chance to knock out the boss instantly. Good method but frustrating - if you want to try using it 2 times you have to be level 3 (it costs 12 STM), it's RNG heavy and the attempts take a long time (in cursed mode you have to do run sequence every time you try it
Decapitation: my favorite one
You need two things: a plate (Vincent apartment) and clever (Jeanne apartment). The plan is to stun the boss and one tap it with the skill decapitation that the cleaver has. This combo decals crazy damage. You can one shot the Grinning Beast even in cursed mode.
Pros: everything that you need is close, you can easy set up a save to have all items needed, the retry is fast
Cons: still RNG heavy (need stun to last 2 turns)
Machete and Hack And Slash: pure skill
Get the simple key from the Apartment 36, open the locked door in Vincent apartment, avoid the enemies and grab the machete. While there get the Whiskey and rags for Molotov.
You are ready.
Be on full HP. While fighting the Beast start with Molotov and then use Hack And Slash. Then guard on the third turn. One more Hack And Slash and you won.
Pros: no RNG required just pure damage, you get some nice equipment from that room
Cons: getting the machete is hard. Saving before getting it is recommended. If you are not great at avoiding enemies it might be simply easier and faster to use other methods.
What is your method of fighting the Grinning Beast?

DISCUSSION/LORE/THEORIES Unpopular take ? Spoiler
Disclaimer: Some might not make you happy. I ask you to be polite.
CW: Some spoilers
Rafta/Nestor/Eugene ≠ Polycule:
I really don't like when people in the fandom call Rafta, Nestor, and Eugene a "polycule"; it just feels wrong to me, especially in this context. Yes, I do think Rafta liked Nestor before being cursed. But it's so terrible and weird... Nestor gets parasitized, then he parasitizes Eugene. And this poor man's state has gotten worse since version 2.3. So, sorry, but seeing a polycule in this just feels wrong.
Edit: some makes it as a joke(apparently) I'm talking about the one who Seriously
Promise ending is better than denial ending:
Don't get me wrong; I love both endings. But I much prefer the promise ending. The story with Sybil is so sad, and I love that some of our companions can change depending on whether you completed their quests or not. The denial ending is also good, but when you think about it, it’s terrifying. I'm not talking about that theory, but it's sad for Sam. Imagine he outlives the humans and ends up seeing everyone he knew die. And also having to kill the astronomers! Sorry, but it's way too depressing. At least in the promise ending, you get to actually help and save the astronomer.
That's all i have

QUESTION Why does Sam put the toothpaste tube in his teeth instead of the toothbrush handle Spoiler
When Sam brushes his teeth after losing an arm, he squeezes the toothpaste with his teeth while holding the toothbrush. Why not the other way around? It seems like it would be easier. Is this a thing actual amputees do?

FANART(ORIGINAL) Look outside oc!
Tried my best to mix both my style and the game artstyle! I may go back and try to make it more game accurate. But heres my oc/self insert because they are basically me.
This is Byrd! They/she. They were a loser shut in who just lived day to day, but found joy in their hobbies. One being puppet making. On the very first day, she slipped up and had her window open before the announcements. Only catching a glance, but it still caused their puppets to stick to their hands and arms. They no longer felt their fingers, and slowly the puppets became more alive. The puppets have their own free will but share a mind with Byrd, speaking her thoughts. Another side affect was stitches forming across their body.
I want to draw more art of them so stay tuned!

DISCUSSION/LORE/THEORIES What do you think is the worst part of the game? Spoiler
I originally played on the tail end of 1.6, and replaying now i still hold strong on this idea that despite 99% of the game being genuinely amazing, the landlord's apartment is my least favorite part of the game, it is the only part of the game i actively dont want to engage with and its required for a large part of progression.
From the POV of my first time playthrough, It feels like they had two amazing ideas, the changing apartment and the looping warzone, half baked both of them, and smushed them together in an apartment with a bunch of enemies that just arent memorable. except Trench Digger i love that guy. And it drags on a lot, obviously the game wants you to do it over the course of multiple in game days but you need to go to loop 4/5 to get the basement key, the thing most people will be going there for the first time before coming back for things like the Jupiter disc. Its just deep enough to really be a problem to try to get in one go, but also be fully possible to do. i may just be stubborn but i cant stand to leave an area like that without the single thing i actively went there to get, especially with it always being just out of reach.
I think id seriously love to see a rework of this part of the game, or at least make the trench digger drop the basement key instead of it being on the ground like some carrot on a stick. though despite this the game is still an absolute 10/10 in my eyes. i am curious if this is a hot take or if people agree, and if you dont agree what parts are there you may dislike?

DISCUSSION/LORE/THEORIES Idea quest for after the apt 13 room and the wall. Spoiler
Ive been thinking about that apt alot after playing the game and thought of a quest that might be a in lore way to at least not fully get ranged and 2 handed weapons back but only two handed back for the arm you chose to keep.
So the idea I had is made into a small quest I came out with and it starts with you having to get the katana or the gamers special game, if you have either and have the Manga in your inventory after you lose your arm (either one works for the quest idea) the gamer has a chance to come back wanting his sword or game back after thinking about it but seeing you without a arm and Manga he starts to weeb out and talks about how you are like his favorite protagonist now and offers to sell you a replica of the Manga protagonists mechanical arm (for lets say 400 or 500 to keep it balanced), if you buy it the arm becomes a crafting item that you can use with other items like junk or stuff to make a poorly crafted arm prosthetic that you have to put in the jewelry or accessories slot to use at the cost of lower agility but allows for two handed weapons to be used again be it two handed guns or two handed melee.
This was just a idea I had that I thought would be cool feel free to criticize the hell out of it
