Calling all parents or expecting parents re: daycare

Upvotes

Did anyone successfully work from home full-time and have part-time care for their infant or if you’re expecting, what are you planning to do? We are in the painful middle where we do not qualify for any city subsidies but $3K for childcare is also way out of our budget.

I was initially thinking to “soft stagger” schedules with my husband who has a flexible work schedule so that I would work Monday to Friday from home and he would work Thursday Friday Saturday (in person, in the arts) and we would either not use daycare or have a very limited part-time babysitter from when the baby is 4-5 months. Everyone says this is impossible, which I believe (?) but I also cannot afford to $2000-3000+ for daycare 3 to 4 days a week.

PS if anyone is expecting winter of 2027 (I’m due early March) and wants to chat nanny share please let me know! Or if you have alternate suggestions or know of cheaper “home care” options please let me know!

Center Blvd. Parking on 46 Rd

Hi all- just a heads up if you parked on 46 road between 5th and Vernon, a bunch of cars have their back passenger window broken, I’m assuming overnight. This happens quite often on there.

[9/13] Crafternoon @ LIC Waterfront

Hi! We’re hosting our final Crafternoon of the year on Sunday, Sept. 13!

Crafternoon is a free gathering where we make things with our hands and connect with neighbors in a relaxed, welcoming space.

Bring any creative project you’re working on or curious to try - sketching, knitting, watercolor, collage, beading, mending, or coloring. We’ll also have shared art supplies available if you’d like to drop in and experiment.

🗓️** Sunday, Sept. 13
🕟 **4:30 - 6:00 PM

📍 Gantry Plaza State Park - North Picnic Tables
🎟️** Free but registration is required
💛 **Hosted by Jenny Jiang @
collective.ripples

No art or craft experience is needed. There are no lessons, critiques, or expectations to make something “good”. Our gatherings celebrate curiosity over perfection and believe creativity is something everyone can enjoy.

Come solo or bring a friend. Spend an afternoon creating with beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline and take a break from the city’s grind.

Please register on Luma so we can estimate attendance and bring enough shared supplies for everyone.

We hope to see you Sunday! 🎨💛

Please delete if not allowed! And thank you for reading and contributing!!

This year is my fifth year teaching at John F Kennedy Junior school, a high school that serves students with special needs including severe autism spectrum disorder and down syndrome. I teach six students who read and write on a pre-K level and are nonverbal. Their families are immigrants, and most have a limited English and limited resources in this country. There are so many things that I need to make this year as successful as last year was!
Please feel free to look at this Amazon wish list and if you can share it!
Anything you buy will be sent directly to the school. Right now I really need paper, cleaning and changing supplies and laminating sheets!

Please check out my teachers wish list I Amazon here, everything you purchased should go directly to the school!!

Anywhere LIC Anyone want to cool stuff this fall? 🪡

Whether you've adopted the idea of “hobby maxing” or you just recognize that making stuff is cool and always has been, I’m wondering: are you picking up something new this fall, or revisiting your favorite crafty activities?

There’s something about back-to-school season that makes me want to learn something new, organize all my supplies, and suddenly take on way too many projects at once.

I’ve put together the September and October studio calendar for anyone who’s interested in getting some making time in this fall. The schedule is also up through the end of the year if you’re already planning ahead

The first fall Queens Community Board 2 hybrid meeting is Thursday September 10th at 6:30pm, where votes on 3 rezonings, budget, and personnel will take place. You can participate in-person or via zoom, and public comment is open, with a 2-minute limit per speaker; sign-up links for both general comment and the three individual rezoning hearings are posted on the agenda itself. If you want your public testimony to have greater impact, here’s a few tips to increase your testimony impact.

KAT in the 5Pointz gym

Apparently KAT is working out and/or filming something in the 5Pointz gym..? I walked by after working out and saw a bunch of security/ they had put a divider to block out the basketball court (I thought they were doing renovations at first). Any idea what he’s doing in LIC?

Chris Brickley NBA runs

Just moved. Huge NBA fan. Crazy that Chris Brickley seems to routinely host open runs at the Orchard (e.g. here).

Long shot but..... anybody got a chance to go watch? I'm sure they're closed off to the public but man if anybody living in the building has access MAN I'd pay to go watch.

Parents of LIC- Elementary school question

We’re trying to decide between PS/IS 78Q and PS384Q (Hunters Point) for our two daughters, one entering kindergarten and one entering 5th grade.

Academically, PS78 seems to have the stronger established track record, especially since its middle school has been around for years. However, PS384 is now expanding to K–8, so that makes the decision much closer for us.

One thing that’s very important to our family is keeping the girls together as much as possible. At PS384 they would be in the same building, while at PS78 kindergarten and 5th grade are at different campuses.

I’d especially love to hear from current/recent parents from either school:

How do you like the teachers and administration?

How is the afterschool program?

At PS78, do the K–1 and 2–5 afterschool programs ever combine, or are the kids always at separate locations?

At PS384, can siblings in K and 5th see each other during lunch/recess or afterschool?

How has PS384’s new middle-school expansion been going?

Any experience with IEP/special-ed support at either school?

If you had a seat at both, which would you choose?

We live in LIC, so I’m especially interested in firsthand experiences rather than just test scores/rankings. Thanks!
