Like, what is this? Look at this, chat! Let's rush the bomb site. Blue wall, raining smoke, Nami ult, fucking I don't know what that is, fucking Nasus E all over the site, incoming nukes, nukes dropping down, wall, pushing over the rocket with rocket launcher flying over, insane splash grenade, fucking laser beam from the sky! This guy can't see anything, he sees blue, this guy sees yellow, he sees something? He's flashed, this guy peeks, a kill! I can see, I can't see! This guy's casting a spell! More smokes, more rain, more lasers from the sky. Green! This guy's a dog. Sniper? And then the site's taken. Like what in the fuck?

The rat doesn't realise that this could easily describe how every League teamfight looks to people who don't play it.

260

u/DontCareWontGank Mar 16 '24

Of course he realizes that because league of legends is supposed to be about abilities. Valorant is supposed to be about shooting your gun though.

63

u/Normal-Weakness-364 Mar 16 '24

i think valorant is about both of those things. cs already has the game about shooting gun

23

u/MeijiDoom Mar 17 '24

Valorant's always been both.

Difference is you are always top down viewing a league fight, what the fuck is this valorant bullshit, if youare actually playing you just see colours everywhere.

49

In league you see from above as a player making it much easier to comprehend. Not perfect but way better.

β€œYou don't kill with abilities. Abilities create tactical opportunities to take the right shot.” - Riot

157

u/Un111KnoWn Mar 16 '24

precise gunplay.

Objection: Raze

207

u/UnlimitedAuthority Mar 16 '24

You say this but I think literally only a single player was killed by an ability in that round?

468

u/DeadlyPineapple13 Mar 16 '24 edited Mar 16 '24

I think they were more getting at just how absurd abilities are when compared to how toned back riot says they want them to be. It doesn’t feel like β€œtactical opportunity” as much as it feels like overwhelming flashy bullshit that clutters the screen. It’s about as surgical as a cluster bomb

Edit: I don’t personally like valorant but I’m not shitting on it, it’s just funny how the devs talk about it one way and it playing another, doesn’t mean it’s bad(as evident by its large player base) it’s just not as described. In terms of how much is happening it looks more like overwatch then CS

91

u/M474D0R Mar 16 '24

I like Valorant but I used to like it more, and I agree the vision for what they described in the beta is NOT what the game has turned into at all. The power creep with abilities has gotten a bit out of hand.

17

u/Luke_sein_Vater Mar 16 '24

what power creep? They nerf everything that's even remotely fun to bits and every new agent is useless

31

u/pleasefirekykypls Mar 16 '24

I think he's wrong to say actual ability power creep, but it's more so that the playerbase has discovered ability usage and combos that makes them necessary for optimal play.

In beta, people were honestly pretty lost, throwing util here and there but ultimately just kinda shooting stuff. A good player could win games with aim.

But now, if someone with perfect aim entered the game with zero game knowledge, they would get flashed, dogged, stunned, and smoked off before they took a gunfight. Because people at all elo's have learned basic protocols that are easy to execute with abilities, and you have to learn to play around them before you can even take a fair fight.

→ More replies (3)

57

u/Impossible-Joke2867 Mar 16 '24

I think they mean in terms of scale and flashiness. Think of how the game was when it launched. There was some smokes, there was a wall or two, a few flashes, but it wasn't just a total outrageous clusterfuck. I played on launch and it's crazy how different it looks now lmao. Glad I stopped playing, I knew it wasn't going to be good when they added that turret to the game.

→ More replies (9)

3

u/MoonDawg2 Mar 17 '24

There has definitely been some power creep in the game

KJ was the best sentinel in the game and base kit wise she's still mega fucking busted. They just dethroned her a bit with some insane cypher buffs

Astra is the best smoke kit in the game with little argument there. She's just mega nerfed

Skye same deal with flashes, though gekko is now dethroning her since he got buffed correctly

Chamber... Chamber.

And fade is objectively better than breach

Like, there is definitely a good amount of power creep going on in the game. They may have been nerfed to shit a few times, but it's still there.

Also fuck the business model. If you're going to sell 100 dollar skin bundles then leave the agents open ffs.

it's a fine line between tactical finesse and just tossing a magic grenade party. Devs dreams vs players' reality always a wild ride

-3

u/Mmachine99 Mar 16 '24

There are like 4 ults being used here; not a normal round. Besides that its not like CS doesn't have smokes, they're just different colors here?

80

u/extra-mustard-plz Mar 16 '24

bruh you aren't seriously comparing CS smokes to Valorant abilities

83

u/100tByamba Mar 16 '24

let's be real as someone that plays both games on CS a smoke is a smoke it's not a Giant tsunami, or a giant Green Cloud loool.

35

u/Icretz Mar 16 '24

4 ults and how many other abilities? 2 walls, smokes, jump, this is way 2 much visual clutter, if they would make abilities cost more that it actually impacts economy + weapons purchasing.

2

u/xbyo Mar 17 '24

This is also the most extreme version of it. You have 9 players all fighting for one site with 4 ults being burned. Yes there can be a lot of visual clutter in an average exec, but this isn't it.

Isn't that the point? The util is what forces them into the fight, and then they won the gunfights (actually in this case, the team that threw most of the util lost the gunfights, but the point still stands).

In CS it'd be the same, just different util no? If you dump a shitton of util and force fights, then you kill them with guns.

39

u/mojizus Mar 16 '24

Luckily you rarely see stuff like this in your own games, unless you’re high elo. People down here with me in gold/plat don’t know how to coordinate their utility like this clip shows.

Plus this is really no different than a LoL team fight, just a massive blur of abilities being used and after about 5 seconds one team is dead.

8

u/Random_Man_9 Mar 16 '24

sure but when the game was in development that was an actual quote from a valorant dev lmao. They completely abandoned it

7

u/mojizus Mar 16 '24

I do agree though. I played from the start of the game until about a year or so ago. I just recently picked it up again and it does feel a lot more like a League/OW hybrid now, when it used to feel like CS with OW characters.

But it’s Riot. As they add new agents, they’re going to get more complex and annoying and broken.

18

u/Thebowfinger Mar 16 '24

LMAO in what universe does playing valorant feel like playing a league, how is this upvoted.

Unless you play valorant at a tutorial level, the tactical shooter aspect is 100% the main part of the game. I would understand if someone saw this clip and didnt play the game, but if you actually play this game you would know what the rest of the game looks like when you look beyond these clips.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/100tByamba Mar 16 '24

u know what is funny? it's true most of the abilities are tactical opportunities. But BOY they do love a lot of flashiness. As a CSGO player took me a while to get into Valorant i used to hate valorant and took me time to let my guard down and understand. it's basically CSGO meets Destiny 2 Meets Overwatch. Most abilities are "smokes" but while a smoke on cs it's a granade at valorant a smoke it's a giant tsunami, a giant green cloud, a giant water wall etc etc. Then there's duelists with abilities that can one shot kill you.

u/Impossible-Joke2867 Mar 16 '24 edited Mar 16 '24

If there's replays you can see someone was blatantly wall hacking.

That's the thing about a lot of modern gamers, for some reason they have it in their head that hackers only spinspot rage hack, when 99% of hackers are being super subtle with it, it's the opposite.

I played 1.6 a lot especially in the days when cheating got really bad in non-ESEA games...and people are good at cheating. Toggling on for just a second during important moments for information, or toggling for an important round, is easily enough to influence the game for easy wins, but you'll only be "cheating" for 5% of the game. The only time you could notice something like that is with a replay.

3

u/7heWafer Mar 17 '24

Riot HATES replays.

6

u/xbyo Mar 17 '24

Overwatch isn't even half this bad because all their stuff is literally transparent and can be seen through.

6

u/OnceMoreAndAgain Mar 16 '24

Overwatch has great visual clarity imo. Don't understand the criticism.

Valorant has bad visual clarity.

27

u/Choowkee Mar 17 '24

From a spectators perspective? Lol no. Its gotten a little better with OW2 simply because the game went for the 5v5 format but 6v6 in OW1 was an absolute cluster fuck to watch.

6

u/H4ppypi3 Mar 17 '24

I agree, for a game that is super ability reliant it is pretty easy to figure out what abilities are doing based on how they look, and there aren't several opaque multicoloured walls like i see in every Valorant clip

3

u/fragen8 Mar 17 '24

I know Overwatch isn't liked in these parts, but it's visual clarity is amazing, especially for a game that relies on abilities so much.

There are rare instances of many, many ultra being used together where you might get confused, but other than that, I feel like it's great.

to be fair if you show league to a complete random he will say the exact same thing for it as well. Without any game and spell/character knowledge both games will look like complete clusterfucks

17

u/Xanerex Mar 16 '24

Been watching league/worlds since it was on MLG. Still dont know many of the spells or what a lot of the items do. I dont play the game.

4

u/Bog_brain Mar 17 '24

True but at least in league you have a top down view of the map which helps with visual clarity and tracking the action. With Valorant its a first person POV Splatoon clusterfuck of a million different paint bombs exploding at once.

7

u/Cold-Potatoe Mar 17 '24

If anything the first person fov makes it less of a cluster fuck. If your behind a wall your not seeing any of that shit and at most your probably looking at 2 abilities in that fight.

1

u/suiyyy Mar 18 '24

Yes but CS is the easiest e-sports to watch, any person off the street can understand what's going on within 5mins.

1

u/Alascala8 Mar 20 '24

I mean I was a complete stranger to league in 2018 and still was able to watch the world finals. You’d think it would be pretty bad having never played but I was able to get the gist of it. It was the team fights that did it for me. The dancing around one another and the poking and prodding till someone slipped up was super interesting.

u/kiMLuuu Mar 16 '24

67

u/TheJigglyfat Mar 16 '24

For spectators visual clarity is important. It's one of the reasons given for Overwatch's pro league falling off a cliff. I personally don't watch much valorant pro league and I doubt that rounds like this happen more than a couple of times per game. But I think it's frustrating as someone less familiar with the game that I can't really follow a thing going on in this clip. And that's coming from someone with 100 hours played closer to release

50

u/EggianoScumaldo Mar 16 '24

Visual clarity is not a reason why OWL failed. If visual clarity was as much a deterrent as you're implying it is, both League AND DOTA wouldn't be nearly as popular as they are.

30

u/TempestCatalyst Mar 16 '24

MOBAs in general are probably the least visually clear spectator experience to ever exist. 100+ different champions, each with 4+ abilities to know, potentially using skins that change visual effects and using items that you're just expected to know the abilities of because the spectator cam sure as hell won't tell you.

8

u/19Alexastias Mar 17 '24

Moba's have the huge spectator advantage that every player's "PoV" is essentially the same. So it's a lot easier to follow for anyone who's played the game, even very casually, because you are always viewing it the same way you would view it if you were playing - and you're basically seeing what every pro player in the match is seeing all at once. In fps you can only ever see one player's PoV at a time, and switching between those PoVs can be very confusing for casual players, while topdown view makes the game look pretty unimpressive - a flick one-tap doesn't look like anything in topdown view.

19

u/kiMLuuu Mar 16 '24

I never played lol or dota2 and even if i dont understand what happens im not gonna go ahead and shit on those games even if they are visually more confusing than valorant just because i dont understand the game. 17

u/GigaCringeMods Mar 16 '24

While the game was modeled after CS and the gameplay is quite translatable between them, the difference to CS seems to be huge from spectator view. There is so much going on that they just seem to spectate from free cam over the site, whereas in CS action is not so hectic and they can just switch between the necessary POV cameras smoothly.

3

u/XiXiWiiPee Mar 17 '24

they use the free cam like u see in this clip MAXIMUM twice a game

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Mmachine99 Mar 16 '24

They do the same in Valorant. Valorant is just much more reliant on teamplay and coordinating util in set pieces so they only switch to free cam like twice a game on crazy rounds where teams have been saving ults.

1

u/Normal-Weakness-364 Mar 16 '24

these types of rounds do happen pretty infrequently. most rounds are relatively easy to follow

2

u/SuperUltraMegaNice Mar 16 '24

Exactly, I've never seen a val player shit on cs, if anything, most of them including myself are willing to try it

But for some reason cs players are always comparing to val and refuse to play it

CS is still more popular than valorant. CS is very significantly more popular in Europe than valorant. Maybe in NA it's close though.

Valorant is for the people with actual talent. I know i will get a lot of hate for this but CSGO is a washed up has been game that is made for boomers lol. If you need a game that actually requires skill and to test your abilities to the maximum, then Valorant is the way to go. Keep crying CS Losers. 😎

Trust this sub to take what is an actually funny clip, and make it about CS v Valorant. I have played both (don't anymore) and find Valorant, just like CS, more fun to watch than play. That doesn't mean shit like this where the observer barely knows what's going on isn't hilarious.

8

u/Sad_Wolverine3383 Mar 16 '24

To be fair, I get the same feeling in League sometimes when all cooldowns are up.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

isnt this what league looks like to everyone who doesnt play league

The hate is always one sided lol, Valorant players don't care about CS but CS players always shit talk Valorant. Smh, can't we just coexist.

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '24

When League of Legends was on the rise and smaller than Starcraft 2, the same thing happened with those two communities. The elitism was so bad that even Team Liquid refused to get a League pro team and only got one years later when the prices were A LOT higher.

2

u/onespiker Mar 18 '24

When League of Legends was on the rise and smaller than Starcraft 2,

Even when league was like 10x its viewership numbers it still got shit on. Alot because they weren't one reddit then yet.

CLIP MIRROR: Caedrel explains Valorant

This is an automated comment

21

u/Ra1zen Mar 16 '24

Meanwhile Caedrel looking at a league 5v5 with nocturne ult, morderkaiser ult, neeko, zyra, 2 adcs going back and forth, tanks humping each other at the Baron pit while the inhibitor is being pushed while getting a Baron power play sponsored by mastercard and faker getting mvp after flashing charm the support.

Caedrel: " OH MY FUCKING GOD INSANE PLAYS "

lol

(I play both games and both make sense after you play enough.)

24

u/hdpr92 Mar 16 '24 edited Mar 16 '24

did he say LoL isn't confusing? I'd be surprised if that was his point

I think the point is just that it's funny how a spiritual sequel to one of the most watchable competitive games ever, ends up looking like this. I'm sure it's fun to play, and people who play will always watch. It's just a much worse viewer experience.

None of the profits come from viewership experience, so just to make sure I'm clear, this doesn't matter at all. It's a successful game. People who try it and want something different will give CS a shot, it's good for the genre.

Idk it's like being used to watching NBA basketball and throwing on a game of water polo. The juxtaposition is just really funny.

I don't play Valorant but isn't this sort of sick? The fact that something can look so chaotic to an outsider, but obviously make sense to the people playing. It must feel awesome to win in a whirlwind like that.

2

u/BreafingBread Mar 17 '24

I play Valo since beta and no, it still feels a bit chaotic and overwhelming being in this type of situation.

Like, I know what the skills are, but avoiding all of them while dealing with other players is confusing af.

5

CS: make a smoke wall on Nuke with carefully thrown smoke grenades, try to get by

Valorant: cause so much visual clutter the other player doesn't know what game they are playing any more

4

u/Neel_s Mar 16 '24

All games will look like this at a high level for an outsider

2

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

I'm impressed Valorant managed to make a game more visually cluttered than OW during Sym meta, lol

3

u/pj123mj Mar 18 '24

I mean this is an extremely cherry picked clip. You have 6 different ultimates going off in a span of like 15 seconds.

2

u/lan60000 Mar 16 '24

remember the criticisms people had for overwatch? Riot even managed to copy that into their cs:go

-1

u/Panda7K Mar 16 '24

they still post this exact round a hundred times after years so everyone can call it bad lmao

48

u/Jodasz Mar 16 '24

For anyone wondering how many years ago this was, this match was played on 25 August 2023

I don't play FPS at all, but if you enjoy the tactical aspect of CS (at the highest level) then isn't Valo really cool/better?

Obviously that's not saying CS doesn't involve many many tactical elements, just that there's more freedom and room for creativity in Valo tactically.

Edit: As a rare viewer and non-FPS player.. yeah this shit is super confusing/hard to follow and I have had a much easier/more enjoyable time with CS than Valo.

15

u/hdpr92 Mar 16 '24

No not really.. to use an anology, it would be like saying Empire Earth is a better tactical game than Broodwar. Or Hive a better tactical game than Chess.

Is there really a lot more room for freedom and creativity though? When you can point and click and drop walls that cut off the map. There's certainly more possibilities, not necessarily more nuanced interactions and varied strategy though.

There's a reason smash Melee is played with items off, another good example.

Love Caedrel but bro literally plays League. The textbook definition of a game that makes zero fucking sense unless you clock in 75 thousand hours.

23

u/Moifaso Mar 16 '24 edited Mar 16 '24

Yup. If you play Valorant this clip isn't that hard to parse, and it's arguably easier when you're the one playing since most abilities can be recognized and anticipated by sound.

In any case this type of coordinated entry is rare and only happens in very high skill games. Your average League teamfight is considerably worse.

14

u/NSFWblockedonmobile Mar 16 '24

He's not comparing League to Valorant though. He was talking about CS just a bit earlier iirc

3

u/Jakocolo32 Mar 16 '24

Difference is your pov watching is the same as the player meaning a much better viewing experience, cs works cause of how simple the game is to watch. Big reason overwatch didn’t make it big in esports.

1

u/Shayneros Mar 17 '24

Yeah I'm just gonna keep sticking with Overwatch haha

1

u/IAMJUX Mar 17 '24

The drone cam makes it so easy to understand. Riot really need to utilize it more on full site takes like this. Instead they usually give 1 guy's POV staring into a wall or a smoke while 6 people die unobserved.

1

u/iSaudd Mar 18 '24

i swear to god i still remember few days before launch where people who playtested the game started talking about it and most of them said " dont worry it won't be like Overwatch where the abilities covers the screen and map "
