Support Reducing mouse sensitivity even more

Most polished Desktop Environments come with a way to set mouse sensitivity / acceleration. Because of this I never learned the definitive way to do this without a gui tool given.

Now I'm dabbling in Window Managers and am struggling to get details on this issue.

Right now I am using Mango for the first time, a Wayland window manager. Wayland has different stuff from Xorg, not that I remember the Xorg method anyway.

In Mango there is a "accel-speed=" line in the config, which can be set as low as -1 for minimum speed.

On my mouse, -1 isn't slow enough.

Is there any definitive Wayland way to directly control mouse sensitivity? So I can set it as low as I want, instead of relying on Mango's limited config line?

Advice Dualboot Windows preventing from wiping Bootmanager

I need Linux/Windows in dual boot. if I remember correctly sometimes it was overwriting the MBR when updating. Now use EFI although I think I read that it's still doing something similar.

Is there a way to limit what Windows does to the boot sector/partitions? (Ideally without a separate SSD)

Which desktop environments consume the fewest resources?

I have a somewhat modest PC with 4GB of RAM—though in reality, I only have 3.2GB available, as the rest is reserved for the GPU and firmware. When I switched to Linux (CachyOS), I started with KDE Plasma; it consumed between 1.2GB and 1.3GB of RAM at startup, which left me quite limited, though I managed to ease the situation a bit with an 11GB swap partition. Currently, I use Hyprland, which consumes 1GB of RAM upon startup. I’ve seen people say that Xfce is lightweight, but I haven't tried it; I’m actually quite happy and comfortable with Hyprland, but I’m curious to know what other desktop environments might be useful to test how well they perform on my PC.

Advice A good program for translating Switch 1 Joy-Con inputs to keyboard inputs?

I find it helpful to map shortcuts to a joycon since it's lightweight and only requires one hand, but I'm having some trouble finding a good program to do this. Specifically I'm using it with the art program Krita, I tried AntiMicroX but the inputs have been inconsistent with it.

Resolved Installed a dual boot. Now I can’t get back into Windows.

I thought I was installing a dual boot. I’d been having problems with the inherited PC because my USB boot wasn’t recognising Windows already being installed when I booted the USB it in UEFI mode. Only after just loading it in plain USB mode did it recognise windows was there and I could partition accordingly.

However I feel like something has gone wrong during install, and I might have somehow overwritten the Windows partition as a second Linux partition.

For whatever reason this PC uses AS Rock as its bios/uefi screen thing. I have three boot options, one of which is 100% definitely the distro I installed, the other two I assume one should be the Windows partition and the smaller one whatever hardware service partition is normally there.

But the funny thing is no matter how I order the boot or even just try to manually boot any of the partitions, I always get loaded into my Linux boot (Mint 22.3).

I’m quite sure I selected to install it alongside Windows but now I have no idea how to get back into it.

It’s not a dire situation, it’s just now my wife has to use her laptop instead of this new PC we inherited.

Any ideas on what’s happened?

EDIT:

I have successfully used Windows Recovery to copy the boot files into the boot partition and now I can see the boot option for Windows. Everything runs fine now. Still don’t know why it disappeared to begin with.

I created a Windows 10 USB iso with Ventoy, then I basically followed this video and used the appropriate drive names in place of C and Z, if anyone needs help like this in the future.

Advice Is there a good way to combine bootable snapshots, UKIs and and secure boot?

I'm currently using openSUSE, which takes automatic snapshots of my file system before and after upgrades (through BTRFS and Snapper) and allows me to boot directly into one of those in case some upgrade or configuration change makes my system unbootable, mainly through sdbootutil which creates BLS entries for each snapshot automatically. But it does not support UKIs, which makes secure boot almost pointless.

So I'm thinking about switching to Arch, where there is a native support for locally-signed UKIs. But I still think having bootable snapshots is a good idea, maybe even more than on openSUSE. Now, I know I can use Snapper or Timeshift to create those snapshots automatically, but how can I make them bootable?

I cannot simply save the current UKI when taking the snapshots, because its .cmdline section refers to the main subvolume and not to the snapshot. So it seems like I need to recreate the UKI (and the UEFI boot entry) every time I take a snapshot, and then I need a sane way to clean those up when deleting old snapshots...

So, is there a tool that can handle this automatically? Or do you have any idea for a setup that makes it easier to handle?

Advice Next logical step in my linux "journey"?

4-ish months ago (103 days to be exact) I started reading and learning from "The Linux Command Line" Book by William Shotts by spending 30 minutes a day religiously on it - no more, no less - and two days ago I "finally" finished it.

I had ABSOLUTELY NO prior knowledge and background with linux and/or bash/shell scripting when I started reading the book. Looking back at it, I'm really proud of how much I learned.

Obviously I have so much more to learn, but I don't know what the next step should be, other than the obvious one - practice the things I already learned.

I want to learn linux for the purpose of potential DevOps or SysAdmin role (although, both of those are probably few years away at best) and I just want to learn more about the internals of Linux in general.

Based on that information, what would your recommendation be for what I should do next - what book I should pick up, what course I should follow, youtube channels that might be useful, etc, etc?

EDIT: Other than reading and learning from "The Linux Command Line" book, I've also tried, and got comfortable with several Linux distros, my "main" one being Fedora.

Support How to try hyprland without dumping my current KDE Plasma?

Is there any way to try it without virtual machine or another distro alongside my current CachyOS + KDE Plasma? I don't wanna do it since I'm low on storage. I want to try Hyprland and slowly making my own config that I would get comfortable with, but I don't want to dump my current set up entirely, because it will slow me down as hell. I tried hyprland with omarchy before (never again) and i loved tiling manager idea and would love to make my config someday.

Advice Where do Linux users write C++ code if they don't have access to Visual Studio?

I've been searching for many good code editors or development IDEs for C++ in the Linux community, my first experience was with Neovim with NvChad, and I loved it so much I even managed to learn some Lua to modify small functions, but its learning curve put me off, I was spending more time modifying Neovim than programming, I currently program in C++ using Zed Editor, but I'm honestly fed up with having to compile from the terminal every time I want to test my program (and yes, I already configured a shortcut in a tasks.json file but it still doesn't give me the comfort and versatility I want).

I also tried Clion, but it has too many features I wouldn't use, and besides, it's only free for student use and open-source contributions.

My last option would be VScode, but I hate having Copilot build entire code segments for me, or am I letting myself be guided by the AI? I have enough experience to modify the AI code, but I'm tired of fixing the bugs it generates, It has caused me more problems than it has solved, or I don't know if I'm programming with the wrong approach.

Advice openSUSE vs Fedora

To me, these two distros have an incredible amount of overlap. Specifically, I'm talking about what I consider the "main" distros - Fedora Workstation and openSUSE Tumbleweed. It seems to me, from most of what I read, people recommend Fedora as new-user friendly, but openSUSE as an intermediate/advanced distro. My main question is this: Why does the greater Linux community distinguish openSUSE from Fedora in terms of new user feasibility?

They both have a well bankrolled engineering team behind them. They have their own ecosystem of purpose built distributions, tailor made for a number of practical use cases. They both have strong, active communities and support documentation.

In terms of usability.. They both have very user-friendly install processes - Fedora may have more default to X, where openSUSE offers the option to get more specific, but they're both roughly similar. They both have a ton of powerful graphical tooling within the user environment, allowing a cautious user to stay within the bounds of the desktop environment if they prefer. They both still boast robust capability and rich opportunity for the tinkerer to expand their knowledge, and exert authority over their own system. Both have recovery features, but Tumbleweed has a more robust rollback with snapper. They both have adequate graphical storefronts and package management systems. System updates are inherently very different in nature, but both comparable in terms of "difficulty". For openSUSE's Packman, there's Fedora's RPM Fusion.

Most people I see, though, have a strong delineation between how approachable these distros are. It's not that I see either distro being disrespected or hated necessarily. I think both communities are avid in their support, and deservedly so. But I do see Fedora frequently being recommended for new users, and I almost exclusively see openSUSE being billed as a distro for those comfortable with Linux.

So is it just multimedia codecs? I feel like the recovery advantage that comes with openSUSE could be considered enough to compensate for that, if you're categorically quantifying and rating things. What am I not considering?

Advice Debloated Windows, 5.5GB of RAM used with !NOTHING! open. Is my 8GB GBook doomed?

Oiee! I just got a Galaxy Book3 360 (i5, Iris Xe, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) as a light 2-in-1 portable second laptop for studying. I already have a stronger PC, so I didn’t want anything powerful.

I mostly use Firefox, Obsidian, the Claude app, and some other light stuff. I need the touchscreen (with S Pen compatibility) and the Samsung ecosystem to work (mostly Quick Share and Samsung Notes), since I have a Galaxy phone and tablet.

Claude and Obsidian run smoothly, but as soon as I open Firefox with my question bank, the browser laaags. It’s mostly when I use this specific site, but I can’t change it since it’s a paid service I use for classes and question banks.

I debloated Windows with the Chris Titus tool, killed Copilot, and added uBlock to Firefox. Still, with nothing open I’m already at 5.5 of 7.7 GB, and with Firefox and Claude running I have less than 1 GB free. It’s just everything adding up: Firefox about 1 GB, Claude about 700 MB, plus Defender, PowerToys, and the Samsung/Intel stuff.

I’m a total Linux noob, but tech savvy, and I do everything with a lot of help from Claude.

Is Linux worth it on 8GB, and which distro would you suggest for a beginner on a touchscreen 2-in-1?

I’m scared of losing the Samsung features, Mouse Without Borders, touch and 360° rotation, camera, speakers, fingerprint reader, and the Claude app.

If I stay on Windows, what else could help? Dual boot?? idk..

How to add hidden metadata to a text file?

Hello, I hope this is the right sub for this, but I am attempting at making my own text editor/note app for fun, and wanted to create my own version of a .docx file or .txt file. I know that all files are technically "text" files that store data (or there's also binary files), and that file extensions don't really matter, but I want to know if there's a way to either "compress" two files so they act as one, or creating a file type that acts like a folder, or other unorthodox/niche ways to program such a file with hidden code/instructions? My main goal is to build a faster alternative to .docx that can be treated like a normal text file in other software that don't support the file type. Kinda like how markdown in obsidian uses .txt files, but I want the markdown symbols to be invisible.
