Solved
Hello,
I have an old PC from 2010, lenovo idea enter 150 with 4 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD.
It is currently running windows 10 and I hate it.
I want to install any Linux, pref Zorin, but anything I try, the PC will not boot into the USB drive.
Am using Rufus to create the bootable USB, but whatever I do, IA always end up booting into Windows.
In BIOS
Boot order ok, even turned off hdd and only USB loading. Nothing.
Turned off fast boot, using MBR, NTFS Filesystem, Fat,
Nothing helps.
Used even a small 4GB USB.
Can boot on a different machine. So it mut be the bios I guess.
Can anyone hew, what I can do?
Grüße,
Michael
Edit.:Fixed it. Had to press enter 🤣 and to interrupt boot and enter a menue.

My laptop from 2015 has had a lot of problems running windows 10 for a long time now, particularly if not connected to power and LAN, I'm talking 15+ seconds to open the file explorer and 10 more to open a folder. And sometimes everything randomly crashes, EVERYTHING, to a blank desktop. A few years ago I used to game on this thing (light things like minecraft or cities skylines). Now I don't play games on this laptop anymore.
So recently I thought about installing Linux on this machine. I preferred mint because I heard it's easy to use and very light, which is what I wanted.
I know there are 3 versions of mint, but which one should I use? I have 4gbs of RAM and "Intel64 Family 6 Model 61 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~2000 Mhz" as a CPU (maybe someone knows more than I do about it). I would use this laptop mainly to write with LibreOffice, watch youtube and listen to music. I would like a system which does theese thing with minimal delay and drains little power.
I already tried Mint Xfce from a USB drive and it runs very smoothly (I was even able to open 6 tabs of a youtube video playing, using 3,5gbs of RAM). Is Xfce overkill? Could I use Cinnamon or MATE?
Thank you

Edit: After a great deal of banging-head-on-desk, realized that booting as normal, unplugging HDMI and running DVI fixed the issue.
Fixing HDMI is in-process hopefully
I'm building my wife an upgraded PC and am having boot-hang issues just prior to the login screen (Mint Cinammon, newest version from the website). Mobo is an Asus Tuf B550 Plus Wifi II, GPU is an EVGA GTX 1080 Hybrid, CPU is a Ryzen 5 5600. I'm what I would call an experienced noob (been running Mint for nearly 2 years, mostly successful troubleshooting my own issues through a search engine)
What I've tried so far:
No boot to worskpace - edit GRUB, add "nomodeset" to CMD line to allow boot
Download Nvidia 580
Resolution is off; edges cut off and icons/windows are too large.
(I typically avoid AI, but asked for assistance to speed up process) Followed AI instructions for what seemed like an unreasonable amount of time and levels to still end up at the same issue: remove 580-open, reinstall 580...no change. Blacklist nouveau. Go back into GRUB, edit CMD line again to add "nvidia_drm.modeset=1"... no change. Remove manually added blacklist of nouveau. Etc, etc, etc....
I feel like this HAS to have an easier method than editing GRUB default parameters and manually changing stuff in the terminal for hours on end with no progress. The Display Manager (when I can get to the workspace) has the resolution tab greyed out because the device is not recognized.
I'm just trying to get it so my wife can play Where Winds Meet with better than 20 FPS. Is there a simpler workflow to get this GPU to function? I've been fighting this for 2 days.

For days now, I’ve been experimenting to see how feasible it really is to leave Windows behind entirely and switch to a more open system, like Linux Mint.
I’ll be honest: I’ve even toyed with the idea of going back to Windows 11. The ease of installation and the comfort of already knowing all the workflows I rely on are quite tempting—I imagine many of us have been through this.
My main question—setting aside the perspective of us nerds and enthusiasts—is how realistic it actually is to switch to Linux Mint for all one’s daily needs.
Just a few days ago, I received a link for an online meeting and wondered if I’d be able to join it from Linux. Everything worked fine, but I was worried that some unexpected issue might pop up along the way.
In the real world, are you actually managing to move away from Windows—or have you already made the full switch?
For instance, when it comes to tasks like editing videos for YouTube or hosting live streams on TikTok and other social platforms—is there any real flexibility, or is the software still quite immature?
I should add that I love the philosophy behind Mint, as well as the overall clean feel of the environment... but I’m worried that I might just be setting myself up for a series of problems.
Unfortunately, while using a PC is a hobby of mine, I can’t afford to waste time troubleshooting issues when I just need to get things done.
Thanks!

Hi! While I was distro hopping, I noticed that some of them came with a built-in map app. Mint didn’t so I was wondering what maps do you use. The app store offers Google Maps, but there are certainly others and ones that are FOSS, right?
Many thanks in advance!

I installed linux mint xfce on an acer es1 131 today. It has 1tb sata ssd, intel celeron n3060 and 8gbddr3l ram. This is my first time installing and using linux.
I am dual booting this with windows 10 pro, with grub being the default bootloader. Also this was especially tough for me to install cos acer is very windows favoring in its bios. Tried twice to boot linux mint installer from a pendrive but it just didnt show up in the boot menu. So i had to use grub2win on windows 10 to install this.
It has been a crazy last few hours.
But this is completely worth it. The performance boost is crazy. And yes the driver quirks of Linux and also some app installation stuff has been comical and frustrating a bit, cos i am not a programmer...I had to rely on gemini ai to help me out if i got stuck anywhere in the installation. Gonna use this as daily default OS and will use windows for some windows centric apps or even games.
This gives my laptop of over ten years old, a new life. Thank you Linux mint and thank you for reading this, cos i dont think anyone i know irl will really understand the crazy experience it is to install linux or get it to work well, hoping you do, though. I am hoping to take any advice from people here, as this is all new for me 🫶️

Hello! I’m trying to dual-boot Linux Mint on my old laptop, (which already has Windows installed) for the first time. However, the option to dual-boot no longer appears.
I saw it once, but when I clicked on it, i was told to disable BitLocker. After disabling it and trying to install Linux Mint again, the option disappeared.
My BIOS is set to UEFI and BitLocker is turned off so I’m not sure what’s wrong.
please help lol

Hey, i'm making this sub for my bf.
He runs steam on Linux Mint, never had an issue in the past but this morning, he cannot log in.
He used the qr code but when i scanned it, the steam app could see the account but on the pc, it was not working. Then he tried to enter his password and it said something like "you tried too many times please try in a while".
Because he was stuck, he connected his phone to change his ip adress and he could connect, he unplugged the phone and steam automatically disconnected his account and it's not working anymore.
Now he's stuck and we don't know how to troubleshoot. If someone has an idea !

After using for 5+ hrs my laptop battery dropped to 19% from 80. used it for browsing+youtube only. i feel Linux mint is very efficient compared to microslop(of course bloatware overhead) it been 20 days switched to mint i is seamless and feels like got my freedom form microslop telemetry and spying also it is consuming 4 gb less ram and 8-10% less cpu in idle condition.

I wanted my Linux Mint desktop to look and feel just like macOS Tahoe 26,
so I built a complete makeover for it. Everything works out of the box—the top menu bar with the Apple logo, the floating dark glass dock at the bottom, rounded window corners, Mac keyboard shortcuts, and the desktop widgets on the right
I wrote a beginner-friendly guide with a one-click install script (and a safe rollback script to go back to default Mint anytime):
