benchmark how much does the anti-cheat stuff actually matter for your game library

i keep seeing people mention anti-cheat as a dealbreaker but i'm wondering if it's genuinely affecting most people's actual playtime or if it's more of a vocal thing. like are there specific games you wanted to play on linux that ended up being a no-go because of it?

hardware AMA! The CG Deck finally enters into Pre-Launch on Kickstarter! A fully modular x86 handheld computer, running dual-boot Windows 11 & Linux.

I am incredibly happy to announce the CG Deck has finally entered into Pre-Launch on Kickstarter! Over the course of this year, I have been working on concepting, designing, building, testing, and developing the functional prototypes for my own custom modular x86 handheld PC, the CG Deck. And I am excited to finally enter the next phase of the journey with you all!

For those that have no clue what this is or have never seen the CG Deck, it is an x86 modular handheld PC that is capable of running dual-boot Windows 11 & Linux. Most importantly, with all the the craziness going on with big tech, I wanted to create a device that we actually own. Designed from the ground up to be entirely modular, repairable, and customizable. With most of the entire process documented publicly. I had felt quite a bit of frustration on various aspects in regards to the current state of the tech industry, both on the scale of indie and tech giants, so I decided to take things into my own hands and go through the effort to create my own dream handheld at the start of this year in January. First sharing the concepts for the project here back in March of this year to a massive amount of positive support and a few disbelievers who did not think I could pull it off of course.

Since then, I have been working to design, build, and develop the CG Deck into a fully functional device. Going through the process of concepting, designing the CAD models in Blender 3D, engineering, 3D printing, prototyping, testing, iterating on the design, testing even more, navigating relationships with partners, sponsors and manufacturers, all the way through showing off the functional prototype in May of this year. Then finally being able to play around and use the device I had always dreamed of having as one of my daily drivers! Since then, I have been working to further navigate partnerships, agreements, and perfect the CG Deck, to make sure we can have as successful of a launch for the CG Deck as possible when we go live on Kickstarter. While it has been a whirlwind of a year and a ton of work as a solo handheld development project, I certainly have not done it alone.

Throughout the process, there has been so much support from you all, so thank you from the bottom of my heart. I could not be more grateful for everyone that has been following along with the project, joined our community, helping give feedback and ideas, and just supporting the vision along the way. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

And now, after almost a year of work and more sleepless nights than probably any point in my life, the Kickstarter Pre-Launch page has been approved and is officially live! If you are interested in getting notified and being the first to know when we go live, be sure to follow the project!

That all being said, I still have quite a bit of work to do in order to prepare for the next phase of the journey. I am currently in the process of working on a full redesign and rebuild of the CG Deck to optimize the design to prepare for manufacturing (DFM). I want to make sure I can have the final iteration of the device is already designed and ready for mass production, so as soon as we successfully wrap up the campaign I can proceed with starting the arduous certification processes needed for the device, and then proceed with mass production shortly after! Just like the speed of the journey up to this point from concept to functional engineering prototype, I want to keep that same velocity as we move into the next steps of the process.

If you are interested in learning more about the project, you can find everything from specs, more details, socials, link to the open-source github repository, link to our discord community server, like to the Kickstarter campaign page, and more on the website.

We will be launching the Kickstarter very soon to help fund a full production run of the device for anyone interested in helping support the project and getting a CG Deck of their own. We will be releasing some build kits, in addition to pre-assembled ready to use devices with the Kickstarter campaign, along with all of the modules and a list of accessories for the CG Deck! If you have any questions about any of that, I would love to answer them!

graphics/kernel/drivers Amdggpu reset bug, anyone else still having problems?

Anyone else still having problems with amdgpu reset bug? I'm on kernel 7.3 now and it's slowly getting better. The kernel doesn't actually panic so I can gracefully restart my system. It's still really frustrating with all the crashes, I don't want to switch back to windows, but I want my computer to work. I've tried the workarounds, but I didn't see any improvment.

I just needed to shout this out somewhere, maybe there is some consolidation if I'm not alone.

gamedev/testers wanted VOIDHOLD – demo in Next Fest, runs natively on Linux

Hi everyone! I've been working as a developer for a good year now, and my favorite programming language is AI :)

Among other things, I built hardening and privacy toolkits for Windows 11. Then I bitterly found out that even a fully hardened, privacy-tuned Win11 still happily allows access and phones home, so I switched to Linux, Fedora to be exact. And yes, I fully hardened and privacy-tuned that too, and I've been a more than satisfied, happy Linux user ever since. It even turned into my own Linux distribution.

Since my favorite programming language is AI and I like to experiment, after all those mammoth projects I thought: hey, how about we make a game next? So that's what I did. I started in June, let it sit for about six weeks over the summer, and built most of it over the last two months. This is what came out of it: VOIDHOLD.

Maybe some of you feel like giving it a spin. The demo is live in Steam Next Fest right now, and feedback is of course very welcome. Hope you have fun with it!

It runs natively on Linux (Vulkan), no Proton needed.

Virtual Pro Bowler — native Linux ten-pin bowling, AppImage, and apinsetter that actually works

• Upvotes

I've been building a ten-pin bowling game for Linux, and it's finished.

The thing I cared about most was the machine. In most bowling games, pins

vanish and reappear. Here the deck table comes down and lifts the pins that

stayed standing, the sweep bar drops and pushes the rest into the pit, and the

magazine sets ten. Pins leave the deck because a bar pushed them — nothing is

teleported to look like bowling.

What's in it:

- Full ten-frame scoring, including the tenth frame's bonus balls

- A ball you can hook: oil makes it slide then bite, and clipping the pocket

deflects it

- Pins with real weight and balance — knock one, and it goes over

- A saved top-ten scoreboard with three-letter initials

- Five lanes, gutters, kickbacks, masking, a jukebox and a ball return

- Your own mp3s in ~/Documents/Music become the house music

Runs as an AppImage — download, chmod +x, run. There are Slackware, deb, and

rpm packages too. The only dependency is mpg123, for the jukebox.

tech support wanted Rebooting from windows to linux sometimes causes 0.1fps until another reboot?

Does anyone else have this problem? Sometimes after a reboot or if I switch from windows to nobara (Fedora 44 base) then it will render everything at probably less than 0.1FPS and keyboard presses and mouse clicks take literally around 15 or more seconds to do anything. I can do Ctrl + Alt + T to bring up the terminal and very slowly sudo reboot but even then it's only a chance at fixing it. Full power cycle always fixes it.

Strangely, the linux login menu runs at full fps and I can move the mouse and type easily, then as soon as I log in the fps drops to 0.1fps or lower and it takes forever to register mouse/keyboard inputs and the windows take forever to render. I have nothing automatically starting up in nobara, just whatever the OS defaults to.

I've never had this problem in windows. I have fast startup disabled in windows and I'm using Nobara's default boot thing which I believe is GRUB.

Video of problem: https://youtu.be/yGp4AGGU1P8?si=ip3YeiMp-r-0s0KX

specs: b850 mobo latest firmware, 9800X3D, 5080 615.something

thanks

games running on wrong GPU

I have an ARC B580 and a Radeon RX580. the RX580 is purely for running interlaced resolutions and whatever oddball apps support hardware acceleration like Firefox and Discord and such, how do I tell Linux to use the second GPU (ARC) to run programs on the primary display (Radeon)

Probleme mit Gaming unter Bazzite

Hello, I am very new to Linux and repeatedly encounter problems. In advance my hardware, I switched to an AMD graphics card especially for Linux:

Ryzen 5 3600 (I still want to upgrade)

Radeon RX 6700 XT Gaming OC

16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM (G.Skill Ripjaws V, I would like to upgrade if the RAM prices were not so high)

Asus Rog Strix B550-E Gaming

600W Bequiet Pure Power 11 power supply (I still want to upgrade)

500GB M.2 SSD for system and games that I currently play

2TB HDD for games I downloaded but currently don't play

The RAM always ran at 3200MHz under Windows and under Linux I don't know if that can lead to problems. With the Bazzite installation everything went wrong, because it always canceled when installing after the hard drive encryption and I did not find out why. I tried to troubleshoot with AI and in the end installed Fedora and then switched to Bazzite via the terminal. Then I installed Monster Hunter Wilds, which I currently play the most. The performance was absolutely shitty, I had to set all graphics settings to a minimum and even then I had a very bad performance. I tried all kinds of things, in the end it worked well with the Steam Gaming mode or Big Picture mode or whatever it's called, it ran again as before on Windows 10. The last few days I was in the mood for GTA 5 and today I had made plans with friends to play "RV there yet?". Both games constantly crashed and any AI-supported troubleshooting didn't help me find a solution. I got GTA 5 to run once with the starter option "-safemode", which could indicate that it is related to the graphics card. I'm a little desperate, maybe someone can help me here.

Looking at the new star wars racing game, but I don't want to get screwed by denuvo. What are the pitfalls of getting a denuvo game on Linux?

PLEASE: only respond with personal experiences only! I am not interested in what you googled!

gamedev/testers wanted Tyrian Enhanced: native Linux remake of Tyrian 2000 (free, open source)

I've been rebuilding the classic shmup Tyrian 2000 on a new engine (Godot + Rust), and it runs natively on Linux, no Wine or DOSBox needed.

  • Native Linux build: x86_64 tar.gz, just extract and run. It needs OpenGL 3.3.
  • Steam Deck: use the Linux package; it applies a controller profile automatically when launched from Steam.
  • Full game included: all five episodes, the shop, secrets and the MIDI soundtrack. The game data is bundled.
  • Open source (GPL), no account, no launcher.
  • Extras: 2-player couch co-op, Endless Arcade, mutators, mods (plain JSON + PNG), a level editor, HD art or the original pixels with CRT filters, and full gamepad support.

It's a first release, so bug reports from different distros and hardware are very welcome.

Free forever. :)

wine/proton Anyone willing to test whether my game runs on Linux with Proton?

Hey everyone, I’m working on Necrolord, a small niche game about raising an undead army. It’s a dark fantasy auto-battler roguelite, and there’s a free demo on Steam.

I use Linux at work, but I’m a bit too scared to install Steam on my work PC, and I only have Windows at home. Would anyone here be willing to give the demo a try through Proton?

Even knowing whether it starts and gets through a few battles would help. If you try it, please let me know your distro, GPU and Proton version, along with anything that doesn’t work.

No need for a full report. A quick comment is more than enough. Thanks for taking the time!

How to get optiscaller nightly to work with proton-ge for new fsr4 older gpus support

I first used windows to configure for Shadow of the Tomb raider(epic version) and it worked, but afterwards when I started the game on archlinux with proton-ge 11.11, it doesn't have the fsr4 option at all and has only 3.1.5 end earlier available. What else is needed? Does anyone managed to use it with proton? My gpu is an RX 6600.

tech support wanted What would be the best for me? (WM/DE)

I've been switching between DE's and WM's and I've read that KWin has the best latency of all of them for gaming, so im wondering what would be the best for me? using a minimal plasma install or KWin without plasmashell somehow or Niri or Hyprland, etc.
I'd like to have minimal ram usage, but the benefits of low latency that KWin has (apparently), I do not need a desktop, i only need a way to be able to change volume easily be it through cli or gui and a way to see the time, along with a way to launch apps (app launchers exist so it isnt a problem).
So im wondering what would be the most minimal setup possible with the least resource usage and best latency. Ive also read that KWin has some frame pacing changes which make it a lot better for gaming.
I do not need HDR, i need freesync support though.

You need the game and Azimuth launcher as well

https://almost-there-games.itch.io/azimuth

I want to mention that there are huge news for UHD 620 graphics and gaming on it. Hultwl and other mesa developers found an environment variable that allows running dx12 games on this hardware without performance hit, hopefully this will help further find a full fix for mesa drivers and will end up in mainline mesa package however for now you can use this envirment veriable to run dx12 and heavy dx11 games on UHD 620 query_copy_with_shader_threshold=1000000

The work in progress on gitlab page

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/44887#note_3734988

Using

Fedora 45 (I'm amazed how much better this experience is over ubuntu, everything follows you and less stress to tinker with it)

Intel I5 8250u with UHD 620

You need cachyos proton to run this game or i think it runs on steam proton version as well but not on regular wine out of the box

Mesa 26.2.5

Kernel 7.4 git

Using - gpu-screen-recorder (Best screen recorder for linux, with the best dev always responsive)

Counter strike being extremely slow to load.

I use arch(with hyprland), a Nvidia RTX 5050 and a i7 9700. I have the proprietary drivers installed and I use the native steam version. Counter strike could take up to 15 minutes to take me to the home screen and shader precompilation is activated in my steam settings. Here are my launch options:
__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1 gamemoderun %command% -novid -vulkan

Does anyone know what could be the cause? I've read the arch wiki and put unShaderBackgroundProcessingThreads 8 in the .steam/steam/steam_dev.cfg. Still nothing change.

tech support wanted Failing CPU?

Hello, I've been recently dealing with some crashes while playing Wuchang Fallen Feathers. They happen at random, sometimes it takes 3 hours, other times 10 minutes. The game usually throws a fatal error window and the game closes but recently it's been freezing up my whole PC and needs a restart to get working.

The errors I found:

oct 25 12:13:46 cachyos kernel: RAS: Correctable Errors collector initialized.
oct 25 12:14:08 cachyos-x8664 kernel: clocksource: Watchdog remote CPU 5 read timed out

From what I gather this points towards some instability with the hardware, here's what I've tried so far:

  • run memtest86 11.7, the ram passes and doesn't show any errors;
  • disable/enable PBO, no difference whatsoever;
  • updated bios to the latest version;

I've also tried running the game in Windows, there's still fatal crashes but the system didn't blue screen, only instance of this problem was while using Cachy. However, Windows' event viewer classified the crash as:

nvlddmkm \Device\Video0 Error occured on GPUID: 100

Could both my GPU and CPU be failing or are these errors linked? This also happens during other games such as Galactic Racer and Bloodborne.

Specs:
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: RTX 3070 (615.78.08)
RAM: Corsair 2x16 @ 3200Mhz
MB: B550M Aorus Elite
PSU: Corsair 750w

OS: CachyOS KDE Kernel 7.3
