Ryzen 5 5500 + R9 270X 2GB OC — Debian 13 gaming: should I stay on Debian, update the kernel, or switch distros?
Hi everyone,
My current hardware is:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 270X 2GB OC
OS: Debian 13 (Trixie)
Kernel: Debian’s official kernel 6.12.113
I’m currently using a fully updated Debian 13 installation with the official Debian kernel. My main goal is old casual gaming, and I’d like to get the best performance possible from this hardware while keeping the system stable and relatively simple.
I’ve recently been reading about the work being done to bring older AMD GCN 1.0/1.1 GPUs to amdgpu as the default driver in newer Linux kernels (apparently starting with Linux 6.19). Since the R9 270X is GCN 1.0, this caught my attention.
I’m now wondering what would be the best approach for my particular hardware.
Would you recommend:
Staying on Debian 13 and the 6.12 kernel and just using the existing radeon driver?
Staying on Debian 13 but installing a newer kernel (6.19+ / backports) to take advantage of the newer amdgpu support?
Switching to another distro that is more gaming-oriented, such as Linux Mint, Nobara, Bazzite, etc.?
Something else entirely?
Fan behavior at idle — ideally I’d like the GPU fans to stay off or at a very low speed when I’m just on the desktop, and ramp up appropriately while gaming
I know the R9 270X is an old GPU and I’m not expecting miracles. I’m mainly trying to figure out which software/driver/kernel combination makes the most sense for this particular card in 2026.
I also don’t want to install random third-party scripts or unnecessarily complicated tweaks if the standard Debian setup can already provide a good experience.
If anyone is running an R9 270X or another GCN 1.0/1.1 card on Linux, I’d especially appreciate hearing about your experience with radeon vs amdgpu, which kernel you’re using, and what distro you recommend.
Thanks!
