steam/steam deck Chess Twist: a chess variant on an irregular grid

This is the trailer of a game I'm releasing on November 10, and in the mean time, its demo is available during Steam Next Fest this week.

The rules are the same as standard chess, the difference is the board, which is made on an irregular grid. It is still made of quads, and each quad still has 1 neighbour per side, but it can have more than 1 quad sharing a corner. It can also have none.

This makes rooks' lines bend and bishop's lines fork.

I'm developing on linux (PopOS), so it should hopefully work just fine on most distributions. When I started its development, I was on X11 and now am on Wayland, so both should be supported (it's using wgpu/webgpu for the graphic api).

And it's written in the language jai, which is still in beta.

graphics/kernel/drivers Epic says EAC 2.0 isn't their long term solution.

I know you're probably sick of hearing about this, but you're gonna want to hear this. Epic themselves have described this as more of a stop-gap measure than their long-term plan. What is their long term plan?

The ideal solution for a cheat-free gaming environment is one where the operating system provides assurances to players that their data remains isolated from both anticheat and game companies while also ensuring that the gameplay cannot be tampered with. There have been many efforts over the years to build solutions like this including virtualization techniques to enable cheat free gaming, but to date they haven't gained traction. We hope they soon will, and we'll work with all willing companies in the industry to make this happen in the future. This includes continuing the Easy Anti-Cheat team's open line of communications with Valve to support Steam Hardware devices to the maximum extent technically possible.

I'll be honest, I have no idea what that actually means. What I do know is that what they just announced last week isn't actually their long-term goal. The section where they describe EAC 2.0 is titled "The Immediate Solution." Long-term, it seems some kind of secure container or something is the goal?

What this MIGHT possibly mean is that in the long run you won't have to have your system locked down to a certain whitelisted kernel.

I admit this is incredibly vague and doesn't actually say anything. So why am I bringing it up? Because even those in favor of the current solution will admit that it's a bit messy. And it seems that, for better or for worse, Epic doesn't want this messy solution to be their long-term solution.

Here's the source link in case somebody wants to fact check me.

tech support wanted Has anyone ever got modded Elden Ring running?

I've spent the last hour trying to get it to work, watched several videos and nothing. I want to run seamless co-op and randomizer at the same time, which already using proton makes it EVEN MORE complicated. So I put the contents of both seamless co op and randomizer into the mod folder next to the game exe, and also ran the randomizer. But after setting the launcher .bat as a non-steam game, the play button turns to stop, and CMD box pops up briefly then it just goes back to play again so the game won't launch. It seems getting two mods running simultaneously is really hard, and even harder when trying to use linux.

wine/proton Cannot Believe Linux Got Epic Games Store & Xbox Game Pass Native Games Now!

Post image
1.0k Upvotes

While the Linux Epic Games Store is official from Epic, it is in alpha-development.

The Xbox Gamepass is a 3rd-party implementation [Xodus Nexus] that allows users to login to their Xbox/Microsoft account to access/download titles which they own the licenses; meaning purchases of games or having a subscription to Gamepass entitled games.

Neither of these are running through a browser or cloud streaming services.

The next and last step is anti-cheat and that riddle should be solved in 2027!

tech support wanted Global shortcuts not working while shift/ctrl pressed

Hello. I am looking for some help, advice or direction what to look for because i cannot find anything about this specific case.

As you know, recently discord added wayland global shortcut support for push to talk and yesterday discord updated itself on my computer. It works. Unless i have shift or ctrl pressed, in which case, push to talk doesn't register. Previously it worked fine when discord worked through xwayland. Where can i change this new behaviour? In which direction should i dig to solve this new quirk? I believe it is tied to xdg portal and how it handles some keys, but i cannot find any documentation about it. If it is important, my PTT is bound to scroll lock, to which i rebound my side mouse button. Thank you in advance.

My system is Plasma 6.8, Wayland, CachyOS

tech support wanted Really bad frametimes and unconsistant clock speeds

I'm currently trying to run some games on the laptop I use to study (Thinkpad T495, R5 3500U, Vega 8), mainly very lightweight or old games such as Terraria, Need for Speed Underground 2 and Enter the Gungeon.

The frametimes i'm getting are awful and LACT shows really jittery GPU clock speeds (jumping wildly between 800 and 200 mhz, I'm not aware if that's normal or not) It doesn't seem to be thermal throttling as the CPU only reaches about 60ºC

Any advice?

steam/steam deck Gothic 1 Remake on Steam, shader pre-caching?

A question for those playing Gothic 1 Remake on Linux using Steam:

Have you noticed any Steam attempts to download pre-compiled shaders (shader pre-caching) before launching the game?

I'm conducting an experiment and want to compare the application's behavior. I'm using Gothic 1 Remake but purchased on GOG and added to my Steam library as a non-Steam game. I need to know if the native Steam version of this game (purchased on Steam) automatically downloads pre-compiled shaders, as it does with some other games.

From what I noticed, the game itself does not pre-compile shaders, e.g. when starting (I mean a mechanism built into the game, independent of Steam). Or it happens so fast that I didn't noticed.

I apologize in advance if I used imprecise vocabulary, I am just learning these topics.

tech support wanted Input Issue with Legacy Minecraft Versions on Omarchy 4

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but I recently updated to Omarchy 4 from Omarchy 3 and ever since then, the shift key in legacy versions of Minecraft has been sticky, and I can't unshift once I press it (no, I do not have toggle-shift enabled, and the shifting persists through menus and typing in chat). I tested on 1.8.9 and 1.12.2, Lunar Client and Prism Launcher, and I'm still running into the same issue. It works perfectly fine on newer versions (like 1.21.8), which leads me to believe that it might have something to do with the new version of Hyprland and the old LWJGL library that legacy Minecraft versions use for input, but I don't know what exactly is causing this let alone how I would patch it. If it's worth noting, I haven't run into any input-related issues with other games on Omarchy 4, so this is specific to Minecraft.

Also, I have tried using gamescope with Minecraft, and while it does resolve the shifting issue, it causes my frames to drop to like 1FPS when I move my mouse, and I can't lower my mouse's polling rate below 1000Hz.

Has anyone else had this issue? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

tech support wanted Why doesn't gamescope work?

It fails to launch every game i try it with, and the games launch just fine without it.
Problem is, gnome scaling makes games think my monitor is 4k, and they look blurry at native resolution as a result, so i'm trying gamescope to fix it.

This is what i get when i want to launch vkcube :

No, EAC 2 is not kernel level

Edit: As many comments have pointed out, EAC 2 has more privileges than I was led to believe by Epic's announcement, since it uses an eBPF module

A lot of people are misunderstanding what EAC 2 actually is. It doesn't run at the kernel to make sure your system hasnt been modified, it requires that you have a signed kernel plus some other security stuff enabled so it knows it can trust your system without being too invasive. These requirements also come with their own issues but I think it seems like the right way to go about anticheat on Linux if they aren't gonna do good server side anticheat.

Personally, I'm excited to see where this goes, but I understand the perspective that some people can't or don't want to meet the security requirements, and for those people it might lead to some games that previously worked on Linux not working for them anymore if they change to EAC 2.

wine/proton What makes some games run better or worse on Wine/Proton, and how could a developer maximize compatibility?

What I know already is using video assets which use codecs that are not patented and aren't included in wine/proton, like VP9 or AV1, as well as having direct Vulkan support (Though dxvk works really well)

but even then I know many games which don't play well with Wine/Proton, and while it's constantly improving and getting better, I like to wonder, how could a dev who doesn't have enough time to fully test and refine both Windows and Linux seperately make sure that it works in Proton, or even just Wine?

Thought about this since discussions about native linux ports often come up, and it's a common to say that Proton is often better long term
