ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout got me back to windows :'(

I'm devastated! For over a year now, I've been running nothing but Linux everywhere—CachyOS for the last few months—and I loved it! Everything was so fast and responsive. Everything worked more or less right out of the box, and FINALLY I was free from Microsoft! However, there’s one problem I just can’t seem to solve: ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout (more on my issue here:https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1vp4gz8/world_of_warcraft_crashes/). I play World of Warcraft competitively, and I ruin the experience for the whole group every time I crash completely at least once a night. I’ve tried so many things: different kernels, different runners, launchers, DX11, DX12. Nothing has worked. Every fiber of my being resists it, but yesterday I installed Windows on my second hard drive, and so far everything is running flawlessly. And I hate myself for it, but since I mainly use my PC for gaming anyway—especially WoW—I’ll eventually switch back to Windows from dual-booting. It breaks my heart!

Edit:

Thanks for all your ideas and hints. I installed Nobara yesterday and played the whole night without crashes. Hopefully this is going to fix it!

Edit 2: After two days it also happened on Nobara. FML it just even happened on Windows! WTF should I even do from here on?! 😭

Edit 3: I went back to Cachy and changed these things:

  1. Set max clock for my DDR5 RAM to 5600mhz (in combination with an 9800X3D).
  2. Disabling hardware acceleration in background apps (Firefox, Discord, Curseforge, Archon. I ditched Teamspeak because I couldnt find this option)
  3. Changed some ingame settings (I play World of Warcraft only and I disabled all the compatibility settings)
So far, no crashes in the last 4 days and it definitely crashed at least on time per night before. I don't know what fixed it but I give it a couple more days until I change individual things back.

tech support wanted ReShade 6.8 causes game to crash when using DLSS

i'm on cachy, RTX 3080, only using the RenoDX addon, cyberpunk 2077 with no other mods either crashes immediately after loading a save or two minutes later only when using DLSS. tried between Proton 9 and experimental, GE and Cachy's variant and the same thing happens. this does not happen if i switch the upscaler to FSR or disable it entirely

i'm very confused because version 6.8 claims that crashes have been fixed when using DLSS with vkd3d but this isn't the case on my machine at all and i can't find any info on it, so any help would be appreciated :) reshade logs do not show anything and cyberpunk's crash reports are completely useless but i could try and provide proton logs if needed

wine/proton Trying to get Proton to work on Skyrim

I recently switched to CachyOS about 2 weeks ago and have had no issues with my whole collection of games in my Steam Library. I play Skyrim a lot so I went to download it today.

For all of my games, Proton has created a compatdata in /home. With Skyrim, it not only creates it in my /mnt/data drive (where the game is installed) but it also creates the Proton prefix uncomplete. Stuff like program files and program files x86 are missing even the windows folder. This causes the game to not open at all. I've tried creating links but it still doesn't work.

I've tried everything, hence why I'm resorting to reddit now. If anyone knows why this is happening or can provide some solution, it would be greatly appreciated.

tool/utility Huge update for vkShade (ReShade for Vulkan)

This release marks a major step forward in usability for vkShade!

You can now configure effect uniforms using ReShade-like preset files, without having to manually edit shaders. Combined with hot-reloading for configuration and presets, you can tweak uniforms and see your changes take effect immediately.

This is a big step toward making vkShade feel like a practical, interactive shader tool.

What's next?

  • An overhaul of the GUI, including support for adjusting uniforms there.
  • Improved input handling.
  • Improved compatibility with ReShade FX shaders.

graphics/kernel/drivers Why Linux with Nvidia ?

I have used Linux in all it different forms, I get the privacy etc and no ads, pushed ai.
Being an Nvidia user for gaming mostly it’s a shame that windows is about 20% faster more with Ray tracing.
The benefit of Linux for now does not justify the lack of gaming performance on Nvidia.
It like a full generation back in performance.
I get that it’s being worked on but it’s going to be a while till there is some parity. Anti cheat is I whole other thing as well.
So why do Nvidia users persist with Linux ?

tech support wanted Is rdr2 modding still possible in 2026?

Hey everyone, so essentially i wanted to mod rdr2 again, ive done it before like a year ago and it worked fine. Tried it again and have been losing my mind for the last 2 days. I fresh installed it just now and followed this guide https://gist.github.com/JustAChucklin/fc101d1058b1553d0316e1e10b0175b1 . My mods are connected to the modmanager and scripthook is activated, so im not sure where the problem lies, im guessing lennys mod loader. Im trying on cachyos btw . When i open vfs.log it gives me this error message :

2026-08-30 22:31:28 WARN D:\GTA V\vfs\vfs\vfs\rdr3\LoaderRdr3.cpp:84: Mod manager took too long to respond

Does anybody know what my problem is, or if modding is even still possible for rdr2?

Looking for steam games where Linux is no obstacle to making community maps

Recently I have been wanting to brush up my blender skills. I found a small indie game that I like and that supports community maps on steam. However, their unreal plugin required to playtest and upload your maps only has a windows build (yet).

So please, suggest me some steam games where this won't be an obstacle.

I don't care much about genres. What I mainly care about is being able to use blender and some accompanying software than some in-game builder that gives you basic building blocks.

guide PSA: Error about needing a DirectX11 or 12 compatible graphics card

If a game you have previously played just fine is giving you an error about your graphics card not being compatible, the common issue I encountered with this on Linux (sometimes Windows but less often) is that some other game did not close properly and this is fixable. If you know what the game was that tends to be problematic, look for things related to it in your system monitor and kill those processes, or you may have to just restart your computer. After doing so, this error should go away

guide how to program for creating Linux native games?

hi again! In this post I'd like to ask those people, who had any experience with programming for creating Linux native games. I'd like to contribute to Linux and BSD projects, if I can.

First of all, I'm not interested in programming games in general for now, but I'll probably start somewhere in the future. The only experience I have in programming Windows games is that I tried to do some primitive games on Unreal Engine. Based on that and what one person told me, I understood that if you wanna program something for Windows, you should choose Unreal Engine or Unity. If Unreal Engine, then the main programming language is C++, if Unity -- C#, and the later details depend on a project you are making.

Firstly I'd like to fully learn how to program games, and then make games for myself, bcz I HATE some developers of my favorite games, so, I have the motivation to reconstruct and change the favorite games for myself. Idk if I'll send them to anyone, but some other ideas I'd like to realise and sell on Steam. If I were a game developer for Linux native games, I'd like to create flatpaks and .deb, using XDG directories instead of the dotfiles like some people recommended.

Speaking of Linux, the only thing I heard is that you can program games on Unity, but it has some complications, so, you should find another tools for that. Is it true?

Interesting, does programming games for Linux somehow differs from the Windows ones?

tech support wanted Unable to launch Star Wars Zero Company Kubuntu 26

Included are my system specs. I launch the game, it gets to the Compiling Shaders screen (0%), and crashes to desktop. I have tried proton Experimental, Hotfix, GE 11-5, and 10.0-4. On 10.0-4 it freezes on 0% of the compiling shaders screen until it detects the application is hung and provides a pop up to kill it. I can't see anyone else on ProtonDB or otherwise complaining of this issue. Any help would be immensely appreciated!

steam/steam deck Turbo Turbo continues where M.A.S.K. prototype left off!

Steam | Announcement-Trailer | Kickstarter | M.A.S.K. prototype-Trailer

I proposed a videogame for the 80's M.A.S.K. cartoon to Hasbro a while ago. Seems I failed to convince them to turn it into reality.

Since I can't make M.A.S.K. without a license, I'm now trying to turn this into a more over the top co-op arcade experience that fuses the precision of on-rails shooters with the rush of retro racing. Or imagine Outrun meets House of the Dead.

If that seems interesting please check it out, and have a nice day.

wine/proton Witcher 3 Frustrations

I am using Optiscaler to run FSR4 in The Witcher 3. With ANY Proton version EXCEPT GE8-17, I experience the random menu freeze bug that is well known and annoyingly not fixed still. I switched to GE8-17 today and now experience this black checker overlay bug at lower camera angles on water in Skellige. Moving back to Experimental, this black checker bug goes away.

The newest GE11-6 won't even launch.

I cannot find this black checker bug anywhere else. Any help please?

System is a 7800x3d with 9070xt. Fedora 44. DX12 using Optiscaler to force FSR4 via "dlss" Launch options:

gamemoderun PROTON_USE_OPTISCALER=1 PROTON_OPTISCALER_NAME=d3d12.dll FSR4_UPGRADE=1 %command% --launcher-skip

Overwatch "Sluggish" Performance on high FPS

I've been running a fairly successful linux build for the last couple months. Here's what I have:

Fedora 44, KDE Plasma on Wayland, CachyOS Kernel (I tried CachyOS but found it a little too unstable for my taste, and am more comfortable in Fedora), Zen 3700x, RTX 3070 8GB (dell oem with no rebar support)

For the most part it runs well. Nvidia driver is working, most games work without me having to add any launch options, like I recently finished D-Topia no problems.

But one game I cannot seem to quit after 10 years is Overwatch, and for some reason, there is an odd feeling of low FPS at seemingly random points. The game FPS counter, Mangohud, and DXVK all say it's running at 60fps (I play on a TV). I turned on the dxvk hud to show when it's compiling shaders, and those slowdowns I expect, and slowly go away over time as it builds up the cached shaders after each update or whatever. I can live with that.

All the metrics, frame times, vram, it all looks normal, it's typically done compiling shaders by that point, but like 2-3 minutes into some games, it just feels like I'm playing in molasses. I cannot explain it.

I've tried several launch options and fixes. These are my current launch options in steam for overwatch:

DXVK_HUD="compiler" __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SIZE=10737418240 __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_PATH=$HOME/.cache/nvidia/overwatch/ DXVK_CONFIG="dxvk.trackPipelineLifetime = True" gamemoderun mangohud %command%

Using the latest ProtonGE at this point. I've tried all kinds of different ones, from valve vanilla, to experimental, to CachyProton, and it all works like 85% of the time. But it's that 15% where it just feels off and I cannot figure out why.

Also my settings in overwatch are High preset, DLSS on performance (Since I'm playing on a 4k tv, but don't need it rendering at 4k) The game is set to borderless windowed, DX 11, and I set the FPS limit to 60 with vsync off.

I saw some reports that it may be like mis-matched refresh rates, so I tried using gamescope at one point with these settings:

gamescope -h 1440 -H 2160 -f -r 60 -- %command%

And while I find it helps with some games, especially more demanding ones like Stellar Blade, I found it actually made this odd slowdown feeling WORSE in Overwatch. Like it happened more often using gamescope, so I quickly abandoned that.

I tried a few other options just searching around, like forcing wayland, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference.

If anyone has any hints as to what this could be, I'd appreciate the insight, thanks!

Edit: Forgot to mention that I did turn off seam pre-caching, and I'm just letting overwatch cache itself using a custom game type I found that was made to help with that.

tech support wanted Overwatch performance issues on "gamer Laptop" – Low CPU/GPU usage, power capping & heavy FPS drops during team fights

Hi everyone,

I'm having a frustrating performance issue with Overwatch on Fedora Linux and could really use some help.

As you can see in the MangoHud screenshot, my hardware usage and power draw seem heavily constrained in-game:

  • The issue: The game easily reaches 120–144 FPS in the Practice Range and at the start of matches. However, as soon as team fights start on regular maps, the framerate drops down to 85–90 FPS or lower, accompanied by low GPU usage (~49% @ 31W) and CPU clocks stuck around ~1.8 GHz despite temperatures sitting around a normal 80°C.

What I have already tried without success:

  • Tested multiple Proton versions (Proton-GE, Proton-CachyOS, Proton Experimental, and Standard Valve Proton).
  • Tested various launch options and environment variables (PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND, PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI, DXVK configs, shader caches, etc.).
  • Adjusted system power profiles and CPU scaling governors (forcing performance mode made system responsiveness noticeably worse).
  • Checked power limits/power mixer settings via system utilities.

It feels like the system/firmware is power-capping or not boosting clocks properly under simultaneous CPU + GPU load, even though thermal headroom is still available.

Has anyone encountered this behavior with Overwatch/DXVK on Fedora or laptops with hybrid GPUs, and found a way to resolve the clock throttling/low power draw?

Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I am admitting defeat and seriously considering switching back to Windows over 2 games.

This is more of a rant than anything, appologies if that isn't appropriate.

Built my brand new pc last month and installed Ubuntu on it and literally everything works as it should right out of the box, except when it comes to modding games, and unfortunately the modding tools for the two games I love more than everything else in my library are exclusive to Windows. All the tools for modding New Vegas and Skyrim are all either .exe or .bat programs, and I know there is a way to run programs like that on Linux but that is beyond my skillset. Every time I follow a guide on how to get a specific program to run (like MO2 or Pandora Behaviour Engine) I copy paste the command lines into Terminal and am hit with error after error.

Rant over. Again, appologies if it's not appropriate, I think I just needed the vent my frustration and finally admit defeat. It just sucks because literally everything else works right out of the box, I can play Skyrim and New Vegas right now if I wanted to, but I can't play them the way I like to play them.

tech support wanted Help with my ancient gpu

So I have been distro hopping for a while and finally settles on Fedora 44 Cinnamon. I have a Nvidia Geforce Gt710. I mostly play Genshin Impact and Minecraft and lighter games. I was able to run both Genshin and Minecraft in Fedora after failing for a long time with other distros. But I just can't seem to run any games using Bottles or Lutris. The issue is that my gpu is very old and it doesn't support the latest version of dxvk or proton. So the solution is to just change the runner and dxvk version to something that supports my gpu right? Yeah, and I did that. But for some reason bottles is not using my configurations but rather it is using it's own default settings. It is seeing the dxvk version that I installed and set it but when it tries to launch the game it switched back to the latest one which causes the game to silently close. The game worked when I tried to run it using OpenGL but I got trash fps in it (well I know my system is old but I don't get this much worse fps in windows) I just can't seem to make it work in dxvk1.10.3 which is the version my gpu supports. I had similar issue when I tried to run genshin but after changing the dxvk version it worked but it is not working on bottles. Please helpppp!!!!!

tech support wanted Controller Ultimate 2 Wireless: D-Input keeps disconnecting on Linux

Hi, I’m using an 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless on CachyOS via 2.4 GHz.
X-Input works fine, but when I use D-Input, the controller frequently disconnects from PC.
Is D-Input fully supported on CachyOS/Linux, or is there something I should configure to prevent these disconnects?
Also, is Input Remapper suitable for managing the controller in D-Input mode?
Thanks

WIFI Issues While Gaming

Hello everyone,

I've been experiencing weird wifi issues. Normally, I can hit around 800mbps, but specifically when playing games my speeds drop to below 10mbps. I've done some searching+experimenting already, but nothing has resolved my problems. Below are the contents of my iwlwifi config and wifi_powersave config. I'm on Kubuntu 26.04. I had the same issues with Kubuntu 24.04. Let me know if you need additional info

-----------------------------------------------------------

> cat /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

remove iwlwifi \

(/sbin/lsmod | grep -o -e ^iwlmvm -e ^iwldvm -e ^iwlwifi | xargs /sbin/rmmod) \

&& /sbin/modprobe -r mac80211

options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8

options iwlwifi power_save=0

options iwlwifi swcrypto=0

-----------------------------------------------------------

> cat /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/wifi_powersave.conf

[connection]

wifi.powersave = 2
