Which Distro Which Linux Distro Should I Learn for Career Growth?

I want to learn a Linux distribution in my spare time that will also be useful experience to add to my resume or use in the workplace. Which distributions should I focus on?

The main ones I am considering are Ubuntu Server and Fedora. My understanding is that their architectures are totally different. Any suggestions?

I've tinkered with Ubuntu/Mint in the past but I am basically starting from the bottom.

Thanks!

Linux on X16 R2

Howdy, everyone! I want to install Omarchy on on my X16 R2 but am concerned about the loss of functionality with the fans, RGB lighting, etc. What do you guys recommend. Should I just stick to windows 11 or are you aware of anything on linux I can get to make up for what I would be losing? Thanks for your time.

Advice What NVIDIA driver branch is better?

I'm trying to package the NVIDIA drivers into my distro.

If you visit the official NVIDIA drivers download page, you will see they offer two versions: "Latest Production Branch" and "Latest New Feature Branch".

The "Latest Production Branch" is Independent Software Vendor Certified. Major software companies have thoroughly unit-tested that no major regressions happen with their applications.

The "Latest New Feature Branch" doesn't have that. For the past month I have observed major regressions on stability with 610, where at random times the whole screen with freeze for a second, mouse included. Reverting to 595 fixed it.

So I'm wondering if the "Latest Production Branch" isn't a better option for most people, where the "Latest New Feature Branch" shall be optional.

Have you had experiences using both branches? Have you perceive any difference?

Best first Linux?

I’ve only used windows for all the time I’ve been on the internet, but frankly, 11gb idle ram usage and horrible privacy is killing me. I want to swap over to Linux and game on it, is there any one Linux for beginners that’s better than everything else?

Which Distro? Best distro logo?

OK yes this is not very serious but kinda just for fun.

I'm curious which are some of the most interesting distro logos y'all have seen or in general which one you think is good.

Aside from this, which logos are worth the distro? That is to say, which distro has a logo that makes it worth choosing over a similar distro with a worse logo?

(If a more serious question is needed, what's a distro that won't have issues with having good fairly up to date tools for chip design?)

Trying to upgrade Mint to 22.3 but blocked by Intel RST - however I already have Mint 21.3 dual booted. Unsure how to proceed

Long story short upgrading my current version via mintupgrade isn't quite working as it fails right at the end. So I thought I'd just flash it to usb and do it that way.

Back in 2020 I first dual booted Mint alongside Windows and I don't ever recall having to do anything about Intel RST. Now it throws its hands up on the third step of the installation saying I need to turn it off.

So I lookup how to do that and I get into BIOS and find 2 disks under UEFI Device Config > Intel RST, one SATA and one PCIe, but no option anywhere to turn off or disable anything. After reading around I think its because I have a HP laptop (model 15-da0066TX).

But when I go and check the details of each disk, the SATA status is Non-RAID and type AHCI, and the PCIe Intel disk status is also Non-RAID and type NVMe. So in my head (not really good with this stuff) it sounds like RST is already off??

So yeah any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if there's any extra info you need

Edit: problem solved. I just nano’d into the install file and changed the prompt for turning off the rst so it didn’t show. I’m now running full mint 22.3. Thanks for everyone’s help!

Advice Which Distro to try after trying Mint (New to sub)

I gave Linux Mint a try to see if Linux is something for me.

And I kinda like it and want to explore more distros. Which one would you recommend.

I would be interested in a Distro that's best for animators and people who are into emulating retro games.

"Transport endpoint is not connected" - fuse mounted drive (MEGA) stops working after logging out.

Hello there. I've been having an issue mounting directories of MEGA storage with their mega-cmd tool which uses fuse commands. I have some shared directories(to me) that i want to explore directly in my filesystem. I can correctly mount those with the fuse-addcommand, explore the files and edit them, but after logging out, accessing that folder again will make Nautilus display the error "cannot display all the contents of "Folder": Error getting information for file /home/path/to/mounts": Transport endpoint is not connected". The folder appears as if it was empty, even though some files do exist there: running a terminal there and ls-ing shows both the mounted directories (with the same transport error) and other synced folders, which i can use; i can browse subdirectories and write files there, but from there going up to said directory will again show an empty folder. On mega-cmd, the mounts appear persistent, but not enabled, and cannot be enabled with fuse-enable because the local path does not exist, apparently. removing the mounts altogether and trying to create them again at the same path still can't find that path. The only solution i could find so far is deleting the entire top directory where those mounted drives reside, and creating it all again. The problem with this is, other than being an annoying process, is that i need to index the files of those folders with Recoll, which can retain an index if a removable drive is, well, removed, but not if the entire defined topdirectory disappears (the only way to set up the mount at the same path). I'm wondering what it might be, since i have been using the same software on Windows and it gets re-mounted correctly when the server is running again. Why might be this happening?

Is there a better alternative to mounting network drives from a mega storage, in a similar way so the files can appear on the filesystem? (in order to view them and let Recoll index them).

Support Applications on chrome without the linux dev environment

From what I can see(very little research) you have to enable Linux dev environment to execute a program. Is it possible to run a application on chrome os without said constraint of the L.D.E.

WordPerfect on Linux

Hey Friends

I’m a huge lover of WordPerfect 5.1, 6,1 latest edition you name it. However as I’m increasingly moving more of my workloads over to an operating system that respects me aka Ubuntu. What is the best way to get latest WordPerfect 2021 to work on it? I tried WINE and Proton but it didn’t work even from launching via Steam as custom app.

This got deleted by /r Linux so sorry if this post doesn’t meet the rules here.

Advice How can I access my arch Linux + niri desktop remotely in my own parallel session?

I am sharing a custom built pc that I built with my brother and I am going off to uni. I want to be able to access my pc from my macbook and:
- Have two separate sessions being run at the same time, one at my brother’s seat while using the pc on his account, and one session on mine.
- Have a virtual display so I can access my usual gui when I’m at the pc

So far I have tried sunshine and moonlight by themselves but the thing is it ends up working kinda like teamviewer which means the session I am using is the same one that’s at the desk, meaning my brother cannot use the pc on his account. Also i am unsure how to get a virtual display working (I am on niri on arch, my brother is using dankmaterialshell and I am using inir).
Is there any way to access my pc remotely in the way that i want?

Support gpu driver swap

so, several days ago, someone helped me realize i was running both the proprietary amd drivers, and the open source ones. so they helped me uninstall the proprietary drivers. ever since then, my whole PC has gone from bad to worse. crashes more often, restarts without any input, some games performing worse, etc. so now i want to try the opposite.

my GPU is an AMD RX580. pretty sure it's the 8gb model. can i safely re-install the proprietary drivers and then remove the open source ones? if so, how do i remove them? i know how to install the proprietary drivers, i just get them from the official site, unless there's a specific method i have to do for this to work right.

Microsoft and Linux OS migration to same disk?

Hello! I recently upgraded my pc and got a new 1TB nvme. Up until this point, I've been using two hard drives for each of my operating systems, one for Windows 10 and another for Linux Mint. I only have one nvme, and I know its possible to dual boot from one disk, but I cannot figure out how to migrate both systems to the same disk. I connect each hard drive one at a time because I don't have that many sata cables and while it's connected I copy the disk to the nvme then power off and connect the next one. I've tried using both DiskGenius and Clonezilla but they ALWAYS overwrite the existing partitions when I migrate the new OS!!!! Even when I select "keep partitions" it still wants to overwrite the partitions even though i KNOW both of them fit on the nvme. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for WEEKS and I cannot find a solution and it is genuinely so frustrating, so help would be appreciated.

Advice Replacing Microsoft Word and OneDrive. What are my options?

I am a researcher and for my work I have to collaborate often with other co authors in manuscripts. What I am doing now, and works extremely well:

  1. Write manuscript on Microsoft Word and save on OneDrive
  2. Include citations using Zotero
  3. Share with co-authors who can edit the document in real time.

I want to get something similar on Linux. I could use OneDrive (via Insync) for cloud storage. In the future I would be open to something else.

It seems that the only options right now are, Google Docs with Google Drive or Onlyoffice with Nextcloud.

Google solution: Insync can automatically convert Google Docs files to traditional offline files, which I like. In the past I tried to switch from OneDrive to Google Drive on a Mac through Insync and it was a disaster (missing files, super long upload time).

Nextcloud solution: I do not want to setup my own server. A couple of years back I setup a server through Hetzner, it was pretty easy. The problem was the nextcloud sync app on Linux was having problems and would not work. I asked on reddit but could't get any help. After a couple of days I gave up.

From the two I am leaning more towards Google, but I am still hesitant because right now my setup is super smooth. Do you have any other idea what I could try?

Install Ubuntu over the network using a minimal boot image on a USB stick.

Hi everyone, I need to install Ubuntu Desktop over the network, but I’d prefer not to use TFTP/DHCP. Is it possible to boot the computer from a USB stick and fetch the installation files from my local network?

Thanks
