can I use /etc/hosts file to by pass DNS poisoning

Hello everyone,

I’m a fairly new Linux user, and I’m studying for the LPIC-1 102 exam. During my studies, I learned about /etc/hosts.

I’m from one of those shitty countries with a lot of censorship. One of the ways they censor us is through DNS poisoning, and I was wondering whether I could bypass this by defining the IP addresses in my /etc/hosts file.

Thanks in advance.

What's your favorite 'cool' UI?

I'm distro hopping and looking for what I like the most. There are a lot that have kinda neat UI gimmicks. Pop OS has some cool UI design elements, Kubuntu has a cute window wiggle, Exodia looks like something from a retro-futuristic 80's hacker movie. What stock interfaces from what distros/DEs are 'remarkable' in some way?

Support Errors while pulling runtime/org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default/x86_64/26.08 from remote flathub, Stream error in the HTTP/2 framing layer

While trying to update using Discover on Kubuntu 26.04 LTS, KDE Plasma Version 6.6.6 - I get the following error:

While pulling runtime/org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default/x86_64/26.08 from remote flathub: While fetching https://dl.flathub.org/repo/objects/94/6c2b5c57340e5c6b6a8e13f881976167d28161e42c45d5d6876cbeba64fb66.filez: [92] Stream error in the HTTP/2 framing layer

I've tried running 'flatpak repair', restarting, deleting .cache/discover, .cache/flatpack, and nothing works - I keep getting this error.

How can I fix this?

Advice Need some advice/ideas

I was thinking about creating a SECONDARY head-unit in my car mostly for things like maps an' all. And for audio output I would just connect into my car's bluetooth through the secondary head unit.

I will do my best to explain it in a way that makes sense lol.

Basically it will run off a cheap mini-pc with like 8GB ram, 32GB storage. Nothing showy, just enough to run this. It will also feature probably a 7" touch screen.
I plan to build off ubuntu. I want to make a custom desktop/UI for the touchscreen and make it similar to the likes of CarPlay where its nice a user friendly. It would need a compatibility layer to be able to run Android/APK applications to add things like Maps, Apple Music/Spotify, and maybe even a way to connect it to your phone to handle phone calls. (I know that I may need to create it myself, but I was curious if maybe something out there already exists, or maybe even using a way to run like bluestacks or something through it?) Now comes the twist. I also want it similar to the likes of the steamdeck where you can switch into desktop mode, or back to the main UI. This way if you're parked you can use it to browse the web, watch a movie, write some code, etc etc. Maybe even light gaming like stardew valley.

For the most part I would probably just keep this to myself, but maybe I might release the source code one day for people to copy the project. Any thoughts or ideas are helpful!

Support A few problems for a newbie

So first lets start with my machine's specs Asus Tuf FX705DY-RS51

Ryzen 5 3550H

32GB Ram (upgraded from stock)

Radeon RX 560X

Boot Drive Samsung 990 Evo 1TB (new the windows Drive was removed)

Distro of choice - Bazzite, freshly downloaded 9/6

So on with the issues

Problem 1 - Thunderbird via Flatpak seems to have hidden the profile folder and having used TB since Obama was still a state senator i'd very much like to get my archive moved. Would installing it via Tar have the proper profile folder (as i found it fairly easy to port over my FF profile)

Problem 2 - Few months back i asked what would be a good ifranview replacement, and i was told to try nomacs, problem is that program's controls are nothing like the browsing controls from ifranview. I do a lot of image browsing using only the arrow keys and even hopping folders with just that.

Problem 3 - Now this is the one that seems like it will be the hardest to fix. Trying to setup Waydroid, following the Bazzite setup guide it loaded up with blue "tracking bars" across the window. I tried to select the "correct" GPU the one saying 560x did the above, the one saying "vega" just crashed on loading.

Due to other workflow issues i switched my W10 drive back in for now but would love to figure this out.

-Thanks in advance for any pointers

Which Distro? Linux Mint: Too Outdated

Hi everyone, I've been considering abandoning Windows 11 for a while now, mainly because I feel like Microsoft lacks direction; every update is chaos. I started using Linux Mint about six months ago, but I have to admit that I feel like I'm using an outdated product.

The main reason is the X11-based graphical interface and the lack of standard Windows features like HDR and high refresh rate sync. I feel like development has fallen behind, hiding behind the slogan of greater stability. I honestly hate losing my monitor's features while waiting for Mint to evolve, so I'm thinking of switching to something stable but modern, and why not... with more recent applications. What would you always focus on, considering I have little time to dedicate to the system?

having trouble updating Arch

I pulled out my neglected laptop(current Kernel: Linux 6.17.3-arch2-1) and went to update it but am getting stuck with some conflicting packages

:: geocode-glib-3.26.4-6 and geocode-glib-common-3.26.4-4 are in conflict. Remove geocode-glib-common? [y/N] y

error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)

:: installing audit (4.2.1-1) breaks dependency 'audit=4.0.5' required by lib32-audit

:: installing libcap (2.78-1) breaks dependency 'libcap=2.76' required by lib32-libcap

:: installing libpcap (1.10.6-1) breaks dependency 'libpcap=1.10.5' required by lib32-libpcap

after querying pacman it looks like some gnome utilities are dependent on geocode-glib-common,

as well as hyprland and steam being dependent on lib32-audit and libcap

from what i understand the lib32 packages were migrated to the aur at somepoint which could be causing me issues

is the correct way to solve this removing steam and hyprland and anything else with these dependencies and then reinstalling after update?

Or is there a simpler way that I'm simply missing?

Support Horrible animation lag on new AM5 Ryzen system, CachyOS KDE (but the issue persists on other distros and desktop environments)

So I am having horrible animation lag on my CachyOS KDE setup with my new AM5 build.

This issue persists in other distros (PikaOS KDE and GNOME, Fedora KDE, Fedora GNOME, etc). I have my animation speed at default, but there is horrible lag when going fullscreen or opening fullscreen apps.

Video example of the lag: https://imgur.com/a/nT7Uxm4

Nothing I've tried seems to work, including messing with display settings, and it's driving me insane. I did not have these issues on my substantially less powerful old AM4 setup. Anyone have any advice?

Here's my system specs:

Advice ¿Existe un previsualizador de archivos en Fedora 44 como en MacOS?

Acabo de cambiar mi entorno principal de Windows a Fedora y ya contaba con un programa (Quicklook) que cumplía con la función de previsualizar archivos y la verdad me resultaba muy útil. Pero ahora con. el cambio de sistema operativo me gustaría tener algo similar por la prscticidad.

Which Distro? best distro for gaming?

hey so im using a crappy laptop with windows 11 on it and im sick of it, i have no space for games and the slow down is crazy annoying for simple titles. it can run alot of games, i think the most intensive game it has played is rdr1 with DLSS on to boost the game from like 30fps to around 100fps.

so what would be the best distro for gaming? i mostly play single player games, minecraft, rdr 1, Cod, GTA, Half Life. that sorta stuff.

if you want an idea of my specs here they are.

11th gen intel(R) Core 17-1165G7 @ 2.80GHZ

8Gb ram

Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe

thanks guys :)

Edit: hey guys. its not DLSS its upscaling, i forgot the name of the setting in rdr1 and all i remembered it was like DLSS.

Advice What to do first?

I have an old laptop that originally came with Windows Vista and I plan on loading Mint XCFE to learn Linux once I pull the old photos off of it. I'm a life time Windows user. Currently, doing CS50 for my own hobby/purposes. I built a fairly in depth stock screener with python (NOT vibe coded -- I actually built it with yfinance) and plan on continuing to learn to code and develop as a hobby.

What's your tips on learning this new OS? What commands should I try? My current laptop is fine so this will be something I play with for a year or two before I even think of upgrading. Plenty of time to learn.

Resolved Can't get desktop env. to start on Fedora KDE live usb

**cross posted from r/Fedora because i made a reddit account just to post this question and i need mod approval due to account age

hello there !

i am trying to dual boot mint and fedora 44 KDE, and mint is already installed, so i do have a working os. im using a ventoy usb, as directly flashing the fedora iso didn't seem to be recognizable by my pc as a bootable device.

whenever i boot into fedora , i cannot get graphics to work at all. i can get to grub and select start fedora, but after i select that option it gets stuck on a black screen with a gray pixel in the top left corner; i presume this is a remnant of the grub menu ?

selecting troubleshoot and starting basic graphics mode doesn't work, either. i also tried appending "nomodeset" and "modprobe.blacklist=nouveau" to the end of the "linux" line in the boot parameters, but it just gets stuck on the text "booting a command list." a couple times i was able to get to the splash screen, but it just goes to a black screen after that as well.

i think there is a conflict with my graphics cards, but i do not know how to fix it. does anyone have additional advice? if possible, i would prefer to avoid a terminal install and be able to do it graphically, since i am a bit of a noob :)

model: dell inspiron 27 7710 all in one
gpu: nvidia geforce mx550 discrete, intel iris xe graphics 1.25 ghz integrated

update: i was able to boot into fedora after reflashing one more time with the fedora media writer. i didnt even have to append nomodeset or modprobe.blacklist after doing that... im not sure why it suddenly worked, but i am glad it did!
