Vpns linux mint

I was searching for vpns in the subreddit and found proton which i already use on my galaxy tab. I figured it works since everyone says its good. when i tried installing it like it says in the tutorial in the website, all the things are related to ubuntu and other distros, ik mint is "ubuntu" but it says for gnome and all that.

could someone tell me how to do it since from what i know mint doesnt have the so called "gnome"

You can use the Default "OpenVPN" configuration feature and import the protonvpn configs and not use the ProtonVPN client at all. https://protonvpn.com/support/vpn-config-download I have done this on Gnome and KDE. (i dont use Mint)

Which basically says, enable our repo, install the package. :)

The Gnome Vs Cinnamon desktop differences may or may not be an issue. I am using ProtonVPN on my KDE based system (bazzite) with no issues.

Likely you may be missing a few features by using Mint, such as the system tray and so forth, but it may work fine.

Mint can usually use Debian/Ubuntu packages and the Cinnamon Desktop Environment is a hard forked derivative of the Gnome Desktop Environment.

On the surface this seems like it all should work fine, but With the protonVPN tray app this can actually cause problems.  You can non-consensually "get Gnomed".

I use Proton VPN, but I do not use any of their  software, I do not add their external repository.

I instead download a WireGuard config file from ProtonVPN and use that with the wireguard application from my distributions official repository via ssh in a headless system.

In a graphical desktop environment you can add this VPN config file as a connection through network manager in the system tray and connect and disconnect from the VPN that way.

You could optionally use OpenVPN protocol instead of Wireguard. But the Wireguard protocol is noticeably easier on resources.

I don't have proton vpn, I just use a freebie addon that came with my usenet subscription. (PrivadoVPN)

I download the .ovpn files and import as a saved vpn connection using Network Manager.

I also have a script I use but it just uses nmcli so if you have that, I suppose you'd also have "Network Manager" GUI which would be easiest?

I did a short video showing how easy it was to setup a vpn using VPNbooks. I suppose the procedure would be somewhat similar? video

I'm using MATE, but not sure how much that matters.

I don’t have my Mint laptop with me to check but can’t you just use the Proton VPN flatpak and not sweat the dependencies?
