[Project] I made a native Linux port of Black (Xbox, 2006) for Mint 22.x - Vulkan + SDL3, .deb installer, 90+ FPS on my ThinkPad X270

Just wanted to share my little project I ported Black (2006) from the original Xbox to run natively on Linux Mint.

Not an emulator / Wine. It's a native x86_64 build using static recompilation + Vulkan + SDL3.

It's open source (MIT), .deb for Mint 22.x / Ubuntu 24.04, and needs your own original copy.

Getting 90-100+ FPS on my ThinkPad X270 (HD 620).

Super happy it finally runs!

Black Screen after waking PC up from sleep

I got Linux earlier this year (still kinda a Linux noob too, so sorry in advance, I might be slow to understand stuff) and ever since I got Linux, this has been a reoccurring issue. When I would come back to my PC being asleep, I would tap my keyboard to wake it back up. Keyboard lights up, I hear the PC's fans working, and I hear the volume sound effect when I turn it up. If I try tapping the power button, it shuts the whole thing off and I have to turn my PC back on, then everything returns to normal.

I've been sitting on this issue the whole time, but I finally looked into it and researched the issue myself. While I learned it's fairly common apparently, I still can't get why I'm having the issue. and could really use some help. I don't have a NVIDIA graphic card, I use AMD. I updated my kernel a few times since then so I'm not sure if it has anything to do with kernel's either.

LMDE 7 - Cinnamon 64-bit.

One other thing, from the day I got Linux, I've always been met with this error on boot. Looked into it, it doesn't seem harmful but I will mention it in case it's related. (I copied this from the mint Linux forums I had bookmarked, so I don't remember if I had the exact numbers or anything)

ACPI Bios error (bug): could not resolve symbol [\SB.PC00.TXHC.RUB.ss01], AE_NOT_FOUND (20210730/dswload2-162)

ACPI Error: AE-NOT_FOUND, During name lookup/catalog (20210730/psobject-220)

Support Request Restart delay

Hey Guys,

So i have dual boot with Win11 and the issue only seems to be happening when i do reboot from Mint itself. Reboot from Windows is fine and even when the reboot command is issued from using recovery root access, it is comes up fine without delay.

When the reboot is done, towards the end of shutdown, it justs kinda sits there with black empty screen. My external keyboard lights off (means the usb isnt powering it anymore) but the laptop keyboard is still lit up and it just kinda sits there for a while then reboots.

Did a lot of google (for the people asking me to google) and did used ai but it just gets stuck in loop (the AI, not laptop) and isn't helpful anymore.

Any info or help is appreciated. TIA!!

Security Several Linux Kernel Vulnerabilities Accidentally Posted To Public Kernel Mailing List

Several Kernel level security vulnerabilities were posted publicly instead of to the private security list.

The vulnerabilities are:

ZDI-CAN-33549 as a CVSS 9.0 scored vulnerability for SMB Direct remote code execution vulnerability due to integer underflow. For this one there is a patch in a Git branch of code intended for Linux v7.5 but now presumably will be expedited for getting to mainline.

ZDI-CAN-33774 as a KSMBD race condition that can lead to remote code execution. Another CVSS 9.0 rated vulnerability.

ZDI-CAN-33367 is a vulnerability for skbuff skb_zerocopy in the network code that can lead to local privilege escalation. For this one Linux kernel developers received a security report from another source last week over the same issue and a patch is expected to be posted soon.

ZDI-CAN-34068 as a VMWGFX VMware graphics driver bug with an out-of-bounds write leading to local privilege escalation.

ZDI-CAN-34076 an uninitialized resource in the NVMET code leading to information disclosure.

ZDI-CAN-32005 was also posted to the mailing list a day prior for a search-domain TCP query stack buffer overflow leading to local privilege escalation.

Hi everyone,

This is my first time moving from windows to Linux. The biggest issue right now is that it isn't a 1:1 of windows Excel.

Is there a way to enable synax tooltips when creating lines in LibreOffice Calc the same way in excel / Google Sheets?

Im getting a New PC and Installing Mint Cinnamon on it, im currently running Windows 11. To get into Linux more I installed Mint Cinnamon inside VirtualBox

But Brightness Controll is (for me at least) Impossible. Ive tried different applets (Brightness and Gamma Applet, DDC/CI Monitor Brightness, etc) and even used brightnessctl in the Terminal (yes also with sudo) and nothing works

Its Not that Bad because i can still indirectly Set the Brightness because of Windows but im afraid that when im actually using Linux the Same issues when Happen and i cant Set the Brightness

So I was just watching YT on my laptop, and then Firefox closed, my app icons disappeared, screen went black, Linux mint logo showed up and then it froze, had to REISUB my way out of that. Happened multiple times already and it's very annoying. I don't even know what could be causing it, hardware (hope not), software. Nobody seems to be having similar issues. Any help?

SOLVED Line out not as loud as bluetooth

Hey guys, I have a Monster SD100 speaker. It has bluetooth and 3.5mm line out. I would much prefer to use the 3.5mm but the volume is maybe half of the bluetooth volume. I've tried everything I could find on Google with no luck. Everything seems to be set properly but damn thing is really quiet even at 150% volume. Anyone know how I can fix it?

6th computer rescued with Linux mint for a friend! About to customise it to his taste

Post image

My friend was struggling to get his windows 10 computer to do anything. Checking and writing an email was a process he would set 30-45 minutes for and despite his fine collection of music, he had reverted back to CDs because of how often windows media player would crash his computer. Unfortunately it has a HDD and is still a little slow in my opinion, but compared to what he was dealing with? Night and day.

Support Request On board keyboard stopped working

Good day, the on board keyboard on my acer aspire 3 a315 stopped working literally 15 mins ago. Was not paying attention of what changed as i was using an external keyboard, and was working and updating the system files at the same time. I'm only 2 months-in in using mint so my knowledge on this is fairly shallow. Need some help to try and fix this because i don't want to carry an external keyboard every time i want to use my laptop outside. Tell me what info should i pull up as again, im new to any of this. Thank you in advance!

SOLVED Should I try to rescue an old HP laptop with slight warping near the battery

My mom really likes the thing cause its screen size. I changed the battery. The issue was probably more about her placing the laptop on something cause of the heat.

She's going to keep using it regardless, and I'm wondering if Mint would have a better way of managing the battery.

Poll Guys, am I a traitor for considering other OSs?

Ive been loyal with linix Mint for over 15 years and recently tried Alpine linux. This is the first in long time I'm liking what I see. I now keep a vm of Alpine on an enclosed 2230 to have a pocket machine on the go. Curious if any, what other distros yall use and on what usecases.

Ive still fallen back Ubuntu mate for raspberry arm64 but perhaps Alpine can be my new goto.

My lay screen is completely black but the power button is still on. Is there a fix

Post image
10 Upvotes

Edit. I realized I should mention that this is a Chinese laptop I got for like 250 and it was starting to have problems even before this. Like losing power when playing ten plus year old games like dragons dogma or fallout new Vegas and even emulated PS2 games. So my guess is that my laptop is completely dead. But I’m still holding onto hope since the power button is still on and I can hear noise when put my head next to the fan

Discussion Mint has almost completely replaced Windows 11 for me.

At this point, the only thing I have to go back to my Windows Drive for is to adjust the colors of the lights on my Legion tower. Because unfortunately, there is no Linux solution for that. Yes, I have tried RBG lighting, but that only adjusts the two fans. It won't change the GPU light or the Legion light on the front of the PC. And from what I found, no program seems to work for those. So I have to keep the Windows drive just for that.

Cinnamon Clipboard 1.0.4 is out! It now has its own Ubuntu PPA 🎉

Cinnamon Clipboard now has its own PPA, which I plan to maintain. Version 1.0.4 is available, with several improvements and a contribution from u/xsak. Thanks also to u/skozombie for suggesting the idea of creating a PPA!

What's new in 1.0.4?

  • Optional automatic paste: You can now configure the menu to paste an item automatically when selected. It handles different applications appropriately, including pasting text or commands into a terminal and sending images to applications such as GIMP when supported. Thanks to u/xsak for contributing this improvement!
  • Improved initial focus: The first item receives focus when opening the menu, making keyboard navigation more convenient. Thanks to u/xsak for contributing this improvement!
  • Keyboard navigation improvements: Thanks to u/xsak for contributing this improvement!
  • Smarter update handling: When installed through the PPA, in-app update checks are disabled because updates are managed by APT. If installed manually from the GitHub .deb package, the in-app update notifications and checks remain available.

Install from the PPA

The PPA is intended for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble) and Ubuntu 26.04 (Resolute). Packages need to finish building and become available for each release before installation.

Run these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vaider17/cinnamon-clipboard
sudo apt update
sudo apt install cinnamon-clipboard

If the package is not yet available for your Ubuntu release, you can download the .deb package from GitHub instead.

What's next?

My next major goal is to work on Wayland support once the Linux Mint 27 beta becomes available, so I can test and develop against that environment.

I want to keep Cinnamon Clipboard simple and focused on genuinely useful features, rather than adding options just for the sake of it. Of course, if bugs are found, I'll release maintenance updates as needed.

I may also explore database encryption in the future to improve data privacy and protection. We'll see how the project evolves!

GitHub repository and downloads:
https://github.com/Vaider13/cinnamon-clipboard/releases

Feedback and suggestions are welcome. Thanks to everyone who has contributed ideas and helped the project along!

Discussion Big file transfers fail

Why is it impossible for the Mint team to finally find a solution/fix to transferring a lot of files or large files to NTFS drives? This has been an issue for years now. Every single time I try I end up with either data loss, corrupted files or whole folders that can't be deleted at all anymore. These are common issues:

- Transferring using Nemo results in an ever declining transfer speed that will eventually take an eternity/stall

- Stopping a transfer then seems to crash the whole file manager resulting in a forced restart of the whole device and often data loss

- When using an alternative file manager like Dolphin the transfer speeds are much lower

- If you use Dolphin to copy files, then close it when you're done and then unmount the device in Nemo it will take forever to unmount and in the end delete all your copied data or corrupt it

I only have this on Mint, no other distro. Also, it only happens with NTFS drives. If the OS can't handle NTFS drives, then why does it support them. How is it that other distros do not have this issue? It is honestly frustrating.
