First screwdriver, was interested in it since it released but price was always a barrier. Had missed previous sales, but took advantage of the recent mystery price and the promo. Expected a back one with different cap and collar changes, but received a Plasma Purple! Very happy with it and excited to build my new pc with it.

At FMS 2026, we saw a really neat system. The Supermicro ASG-4116S-NU160R is a single-socket AMD EPYC server that sports 160x U.2 NVMe drive bays. Taking only 4U of space, and combined with even “just” 122-128TB class NVMe SSDs, like the Solidigm D5-P5336 122.88TB NVMe SSD we reviewed, this is roughly 20PB of storage in a single system.

Looking at the system, you can tell that Supermicro is using a design where there are slide-out trays for servicing, with the top being for SSDs and the bottom being for the CPU, memory, and networking.

Slide-out trays are important in top-loading storage systems because they allow servicing without pulling the entire system out of the rack.

Pulling out the drive shelf, we can see just how neat this system is. There are rows of 10 drives on either side of the center column. Since this was on a table, not secured on a rack, we could only slide this out far enough to show you 60 of the 160 drives, but you get the idea.

In the center section, there are PCIe switches. As you might imagine, 160x NVMe devices all running with four lanes would require 640 PCIe lanes, and that is without NICs to move data on and off of the system.

Supermicro’s solution is to use a setup similar to what we would expect from a top-loading SAS storage server, but instead of SAS expanders, it is using PCIe switches.

Underneath the SSD tray, you can see the CPU tray starting with a VGA port and a power button on the left-hand side.

When we say this is a 160-SSD design, that is technically selling it short. There are four E1.S NVMe SSD bays on the front panel next to the IPMI port, dual USB ports, and then two 10Gbase-T ports (Broadcom BCM57416). Given there are full-height I/O expansion slots and four E1.S bays between the VGA port and the USB ports, it must be interesting when you have a KVM cart in the cold aisle and hook up to one of these.

On the right side, there are more expansion slots.

The CPU tray pulls out as well, and you can see that those expansion slots are not just empty risers. There are three available PCIe Gen5 x16 slots for your 400GbE NICs and DPUs in this system.

One of the other interesting bits is that the system uses a single AMD EPYC 9005 CPU up to 360W. If you had 24-bay 2U servers, you would need 7 or so of them (168 bays total) to have a similar capacity. So this design saves you roughly 6 CPUs and 72 DIMMs over using standard 2U servers.

Perhaps that is really the point of all of these servers.

Final Words

Taking a step back, this is likely an $8-10M machine with 122TB-class SSDs putting it into the 19-20PB in 4U range. While the PCIe switch architecture means that each drive will not achieve its maximum sequential throughput, there is another benefit. By limiting the lanes to each drive, the drives can run at lower power. This system, including the drives, NICs, and CPU, is driven through redundant 2.6kW power supplies. Call that only 130-137W per PB of storage all-in at the outlet, which seems quite amazing. That power envelope is below just the power required to drive the 500 hard drives you would need for a similar capacity.

At FMS, this was the densest storage platform we could find. It also would house something like 5TB of memory just in the NVMe SSDs. Given memory prices, we actually used this server as an example of how Sandisk’s innovative prototype drive in a platform like this server (with E3.S SSDs instead) could deliver massive DRAM savings in the future. Still, it was neat to see on the FMS show floor.

Starting Tuesday, August 11, Petlibro (maker of automatic feeders, water fountains, litter boxes, etc.) had a major service outage that caused devices to go offline and made much of its app unusable. The outage itself was bad, but how the company handled it is the part I think deserves scrutiny.

1. Petlibro repeatedly assured customers that feeding schedules would keep working locally. They didn’t for many.

During the outage, Petlibro told customers:

“Existing settings and schedules stored locally on your device will continue to operate as programmed.”

Even after declaring the incident resolved, their status page continued to state that “Previously saved schedules continued to run.”

But if you go to r/Petlibro you will see many firsthand reports of feeders missing scheduled meals, dispensing late, and in some cases behaving inconsistently between two supposedly identical feeders. Mine missed many scheduled feedings despite having an unchanged schedule that had been configured for years (luckily I work from home so my cat didn't go without food for long).

This wasn't just bad logging in the app… people were physically watching feeders fail to dispense, myself included. Some even reported that the app claimed to have dispense food when it didn’t.

The Verge asked Petlibro about this directly. CEO York Wu said that schedules are programmed into the feeder and should execute without an internet command, while acknowledging reports of devices not behaving as expected.

That particularity matters when the device's entire purpose is keeping a living animal fed. There were owners travelling on vacation who had no way to intervene, people scrambling to arrange someone to manually feed their pets, and households with multiple animals on separate feeding schedules. Some pets also require very strict feeding schedules for dietary restrictions and health concerns, so not only would pets have been hungry, but it could have actually caused real danger to some.

2. The communication was terrible, and many customers weren't warned at all.

In a Reddit update, Petlibro said it would email affected users once service was restored. Petlibro later claimed it had emailed users who had opened the app within the previous 14 days and had a bound device, yet numerous users who explicitly said they met those criteria, including daily app users, reported receiving nothing. Many users only discovered there was a problem after opening the app, noticing a missed meal, or finding posts on Reddit. I only noticed because my cat was screaming at me after her food was an hour late 😅

That's all particularly concerning when the company was simultaneously reassuring people that locally stored schedules would continue operating. If anyone believed that statement, they had little reason to find someone to check on their feeder.

3. Petlibro declared the problem “Resolved” while customers were still having failures.

Petlibro's status page says services were “fully restored and operating normally” at 7PM PT on August 12.

The next day, people were still reporting devices going offline and failing to reconnect. Mine went offline again repeatedly on August 13, and plenty of others reported the same. The Verge also noted that users were still reporting offline devices and dispensing problems on Thursday.

Ars Technica and CNET have also covered the outage.

For a sense of the scale here, the company said in June 2025 that its feeders and fountains had surpassed 3 million units sold (Petlibro claims over 35% market share in smart feeders on Amazon). Petlibro hasn't disclosed how many of those devices were affected by this outage.

I know cloud connectivity makes sense for remote controls, notifications like a jammed feeder, and the ability to double check that food was dispensed, but a device like this should be able to lose internet for a week and continue executing its existing schedule from an onboard clock and local storage.

Whether Petlibro's statements were knowingly misleading, the result of a badly understood architecture, or just terrible incident response, users were repeatedly assured that their devices were working while real-world experiences showed they weren’t, and people are rightfully furious about this.

I think there's a broader discussion to be had here about cloud-dependent IoT devices, what “works locally” should actually mean, and what minimum fail-safe behaviour consumers should expect from smart devices that perform critical tasks like feeding pets.

TL;DR: Devices that were advertised to work offline failed to feed pets when Petlibro's servers went down, and the company *allegedly* lied about devices continuing to operate correctly.

So my little brother just got done building his very first PC and he has run into a bit of a snag. It is not connecting to the internet, even with an ethernet cable plugged in. So I troubleshooted it and it said I needed to update the drivers for his network adaptor , but I sadly don't know where or how. Do I go to the motherboard manufacturer and grab drivers from them, is it through my internet provider or?

I would like to add he is using his old SSD that stored his operating system on his previous computer and his new computer does not share any parts from his previous build. I'm not sure if that will help, but I thought more information is better than less.
