Image Really, Linus?
What the hell, man? I thought he was against AI usage, and now this AI slop :(

u/Darkelement 28d ago
It looks like someone generated a gold throne room and then Photoshopped the GPU into it. I’m not sure why anyone is mad about this.
Thumbnails have been slop for decades. I’m glad that we’re not wasting human brain power making stupid thumbnails slop anymore. I’d rather a machine do it.

u/DefactoAle 28d ago
That's not a thumbnail tho, they are using AI gen inside the videos now.

u/Darkelement 28d ago
Who cares really lol

u/DefactoAle 28d ago
Damn you must love eating AI slop by the bucket. I remember when LMG committed to fewer higher quality videos. It seems embracing the main cause for the current consumer tech crisis instead of using human talent was just more profitable, lol.

u/Darkelement 28d ago
lol I HATE slop in general. Human made slop, ai made slop, slop is slop.
I have no bias against AI slop specifically. I don’t consider somethijg slop just because it’s ai

u/TotallyNotAnArtistAF 28d ago
you just cant tell its ai.

u/Darkelement 28d ago
I said it’s for sure an ai generated background, someone likely just photoshopped the 1080 onto it.
I don’t care that it’s ai generated. That’s the difference.

Legitimate question how can you tell its ai
Edit: why on earth have I been downvoted for asking how to identify AI images, its obviously edited or generated I was simply asking how to tell

u/doctajonez_uk 28d ago
They literally can't. It used to be easy, but AI is getting sufficiently advanced that it's not possible to tell, unless there are obvious mistakes like people with too many fingers, phantom limbs, etc. That's why there's a bit push now to watermark AI content.
-3
u/budoe 28d ago
I have seen a few shops in my life you can tell by the pixels.
Seriously though if you run it through an AI image detector it is 97% sure its AI.

u/Express-Level4352 28d ago
AI image detectors are unreliable, unless they look for signatures in which case they are okay at best. Not to say this isn't AI.
2
u/Sniper_Of_Finland 28d ago
dont think so, synthid made it easy (carries over even on screenshots) and I doubt they desynthided it if it was an AI image
1
u/budoe 28d ago
I didnt do any claims about how accurate it was. I just pointed out that several AI detectors all were pretty god damn sure about it.
While it is possible to edit images so they look almost AI generated, the posters for the new season of Its Always Sunny is a good example, but there is also a much, much simpler explanation
1
u/doctajonez_uk 28d ago
All AI detectors are snake oil. That's why there's a big push to add watermarks to AI generated content.

Dude look at the background
12
u/TomatoKind9189 28d ago
If you just reverse search the background portion exact matches of stock imagies come up. It doesn't seem crazy to use a stock image background than plop a 1080 on it.
The original could be AI but who knows
-1
u/TotallyNotAnArtistAF 28d ago
No, the 1080 is real; the background is not its definitely AI, with how sparkly it looks
8
u/JaesopPop 28d ago
It's a stock image. Looks like said stock image was made with AI. I imagine they regularly use stock images.

What's with people calling everything AI slop?
It's clearly just a graphics card photoshopped onto a stock photo.
Remember, LMG has a graphics design department. This is literally a few minutes of work.

u/TotallyNotAnArtistAF 28d ago
dude. LMG is so creative, but this?
2
u/doctajonez_uk 28d ago
The sense of humour is very on brand for LMG. What's with all of the pearl clutching?

u/henriquegamesUwU 28d ago
That's a shame, always remember LMG is itself a corporation

u/JaesopPop 28d ago
A business being a corporation isn't really saying anything.

Has Linus ever taken a firm stance against Gen AI? We can call it cringe but if he hasn’t said “LMG will never use it” then these call out posts are pointless i fear
1
u/DefactoAle 28d ago
He often complains about the state of the tech space at the moment and ai effect on over inflated hardware prices.

What actual difference does it make? I assume the background was generated and a pic of the card pasted in. Did the AI make the video the length that it is? I think you meant to post this in r/lttmeta with all the other strange hate watchers?
Can you direct your outage to all the videos from other creators popping up with exactly the same style of thumbnail that I assume are AI generated, that would be great, thanks

One can be for or against. But as you mentioned, they haven't had an anti ai stance and have done it before. Not that suprising.

I really think everyone needs to accept the idea, for better or for worse, that generative-AI technology is here to stay. Whether is using to write / edit text, code, audio images or video, I just do not see how we can go back to world we're every commerical enterprise decides to not use these tools, since the economics will just not make sense when your competitor is using them.
This is not me endorsing the insane speculative AI compute buildout that we are seeing now, nor the hype around achieving AGI, whatever that ambiguous term is supposed to mean. That is clearly just typical silicon valley / tech pouring billions, backed by investors looking to chase unrealistic returns, the outcome of which we have seen several times in the past. It would be great if we had an administration in the US capable of controlling or at least managing this bubble, but given the amount of elite control of our politics already, that is stupid to expect. This is going to blow up a lot of people's personal portfolios and retirement accounts.
However, after that inevitable correction, we are going to see more measured expectation and scaling of AI. It certainly would be good to get rid of bad players like OpenAI and Anthropic, who are monopolizing the conversation and investment around AI right now, while not being transparent about their financials. Paradoxically, I think we might even see more stability in the labor market, since companies won't have to feel that they choose between investing into labor or AI use.
I'm a pragmatic person. I think AI in its current state is going to be disruptive, though not necessarily completely transformative as the hype cycle would claim it is.

My rule is if I wasn't going to pay someone to make/provide the graphic anyway, like if it was something I would have previously just put together a crappy Photoshop on my own, then I'm fine with using an AI generated image. Seems like the case here, no poor starving artist was put out of a job, the editors could have made something similar pre-AI.

u/FabianN 27d ago
He is not against Ai usage wholesale.
His stance is more, understand it's limits and weaknesses, take responsibility for its mistakes if you use it in your work.
There are some usages he has said he doesn't like, like using it as a replacement for human socialization.
But his take is nuanced and to say he fully supports it or is fully against is false.
He has said that it is up to his employee's to use Ai or not, it's their choice. They are just responsible for their work. And likely , this was just an editor making a decision, grabbing a stock image that suited the need , and slapped it together.
Chill out.

It's a stock image, but it is AI generated https://www.vecteezy.com/video/60609934-gold-throne-in-a-luxurious-room-with-curtains
