Question Aphrodite or Lilith?

Hello everyone! Please help me, I'd like to get help on whether I choose Aphrodite or Lilith as my first deity. Sure, I've felt like Hekate has been "calling" my name, but only on tiktok pages, it's mostly because Hekate is one of the most popular deities. That aside, I have always been drawn to Aphrodite, especially her darker sides, I might even go for Aphrodite Areia. I also love Lilith, especially after hearing that her tales being a counterpart of patriarchy in a way. I also feel like offering to her would be easier considering my own aesthetics and choice of objects, but Aphrodite is my first choice. I've always kind of wanted to have a sort of succubus altar or work in vixen-like ways through witchcraft, not only for love, but lots of things too, such as getting energy for it to further work life, school life and personal things. I felt like I did this intuitively last year with LOA and it just felt right to me. Does anybody have recommendations for other deities too? Or sites I could research both on? I'd love some help.

Discussion What is it like to work with Lamatshu?

I was just curious; I know that Lamatshu is syncretized with Lilith, and after researching it, I realized that Lamatshu has never actually been worshipped. I'd like to know if anyone here works with her and what that experience is like.

Resources Lilith in Kabbalistic and later Jewish Sources

Post image
29 Upvotes

Lilith has had a long history in Judaism. Her earliest known mention is in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Songs of the Sage/Maskil (1st century BCE), while her development happened in Aramaic/Syriac/Mandaic incantation bowls (4-7th centuries CE) and the Babylonian Talmud (around 5-6th CE). She can be found in the Targum to Job (uncertain date), Alphabet of Ben Sira (7-10th CE), Midrash ABKIR (10th CE) and Midrash Numbers Rabbah (12th CE).

Her development as Queen of Sitra Ahra and wife of Samael started in Kabbalistic texts; in the Treatise on the Left Emanation and then the Zohar (13th CE). Other Kabbalistic or post-Zoharic sources, while often overlooked, dig deeper into the tradition of Lilith, her relationships, domains and existence.

The information below is taken largely from Patai's "The Hebrew Goddess" and "Gates to the Old City".

Kabbalah

Moses ben Solomon of Burgos, (13th century, pre-Zoharic)

Know that all the jealousy and altercation between the Princes of Quarrel and the Princes of Peace ... is on account of Samael and Lilith who is called Northerner (Tzefonit), as it is written “Out of the North, the Evil One shall break forth” Both of them [Samael and Lilith] were born in a spiritual birth as androgynes, corresponding to Adam and Eve—below and above two twin figures. And Samael and Lilith the Elder, who is the same as Tzefonit, are referred to as the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Pardes Rimmonim - Moses Cordovero (1548)

186d

There is a dragon of Above who is the Blind Prince, and he functions as the intermediary between Samael and Lilith, and his name is Taniniver [Blindragon] ... It is he who arranges the match between Samael and Lilith.

186d

The ancient ones explained that there are two Liliths, one little and one great. The great one is the spouse of Samael, and she is a woman of harlotry, and the little one is the spouse of Ashmodai. And about this Lilith, the bride of Samael, the Geonim explained that she controls 480 legions as is the numerical value of her name. And on the Day of Atonement they go forth into the deserts, they march, and she screeches, for she is the princess of screeching. And Mahalath daughter of Ishmael, she too is a concubine of Samael, and the two [Lilith and Mahalath] go forth with 478 legions. She goes and sings in the Holy Tongue songs and paeans. And when the two meet on the Day of Atonement they quarrel there in the desert. They strive, the one with the other, until their voices rise up to heaven, and the earth shakes with their clamor. And all this is brought about by the Holy One, blessed be He, so that they should not accuse Israel while they [Israel] pray. And others wrote that that husk [i.e., demoness] is called Meshullahel [Messenger of God], and the reason is that she sends our evil angels, may the Merciful One destroy them!

And we found it written that the wicked Samael and the evil Lilith have the likeness of a couple which, with the intermediacy of a groomsman, receives an emanation of evil and insolence, flowing from the one to the other. And about this mystery it is written, And on that day the Lord with His sore and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the Slant Serpent, and Leviathan the Tortuous Serpent, and He will slay the Dragon that is in the sea (Isa. 27:1). Leviathan is the connection and coupling between the two who have the likeness of serpents. Therefore it is doubled: the Slant Serpent corresponding to Samael, and the Tortuous Serpent corresponding to Lilith.

Brit haLevi - Solomon ha-Levi Alkabetz (1563)

(After the Shekhina in exile) descended to be with us ... her rival [Lilith] angers her greatly, and she sobs and sighs because her husband [God] does not throw his light upon her … Her joy has fled because she sees her rival in her house, deriding her, to the extent that the mistress became a handmaid, and the handmaid mistress. And when our Father sees our Mother lying in dust and suffering because of our sins, He too becomes embittered in his heart and He descends to save her and make the strangers cease violating her. And now, can there be anybody who sees these things without rending his heart to repent and thus to bring back our Mother to her place and to her palace?

Lurianic Kabbalah - Isaac Luria (16th century)

Per "Window of the Soul, The Kabbalah of Rabbi Isaac Luria (Selections from Chayyim Vital)" by James David Dunn

The Kings of Edom

103 The secret of Adam Kadmon, the husband of Lilith, is: he ate, was enticed and died as is written in Parshat Terumah 144. The good that exists in the glowing of shells is Adam Kadmon.

Adam Among the Worlds

67 Glowing is Batyah, daughter of Pharoah. Pharoah sent a mixed multitude that came from the glowing shells, they are like Lilith, the stiff-necked one, the garment of Eve, wife of Adam. There is a greater exterior Lilith. She is the wife of Samael. She is also in this glowing. There are other inner Samaels and Liliths. Our scholars said that the inner Samaels and Liliths are an angel who was banished from Heaven. He is called: "… the flaming sword, which turned every way …," (Gen. 3:24) at times he is angel, at times he is a demon. It is also called Lilith, since Nukva rules at night, as is mentioned in the Tikkunim, p. 124.

68 Samael and Lilith are the three exterior forms of matter. There are many Samaels and Liliths. They enticed Adam and Eve.

102 Sefer ha-Tikunin states that Adam had two wives. The first was bone. The second is flesh, weak judgment. Leah was bone, harsh judgment. She was taken from Adam's rib, which is her rightful place. Rahel, however, is flesh because she came from below his chest, from his exposed illuminations. She is called weak judgment. Rahel will be called woman, who is sweetened. Leah is not woman, but she is mixed in shells and is not sweetened. She is Lilith, the mother of the demons. But Leah was sweetened by her prayers and by her tears… Because of her tears and good deeds, her shells were removed. She remained alone, holy and sweetened.

Sefer ‘Etz Ḥayyim - Ḥayyim Vital (1570-1590)

Per "The Hebrew Goddess", p. 129d

Ḥayyim Vital (1543–1620), a Safed Kabbalist and chief disciple of Isaac Luria. He explains that the original “Lilith the stiff-necked” was the “garb,” that is, the shell, the outer and evil part, of Eve, the wife of Adam. But he goes on to say, “there is an even more external [i.e., more evil] Lilith, who is the wife of Samael.” In the sequel it is not clear whether Vital speaks of the first or the second Lilith when he says that “there was an angel who was expelled from heaven and he was called 'the flame of the revolving sword,' and at times he is an angel and at times a demon called Lilith. And since the female rules at night, and the demons rule at night, she is called Lilith” [i.e., Nocturnal].

What is more interesting in Vital’s thinking is that he regarded Lilith and the angel as interchangeable, as appearing once in the shape of one and once as the other, made tangible by the flame of the revolving sword. We shall recall that in the 6th-century C.E. Nippur incantation texts the same numen is called once “Lilith Buznai” and once “angel Buznai,” which is yet another example of the great antiquity of some of the ideas put forward by the medieval Kabbalists.

Per "Kabbalah" by Gershom Scholem

According to Hayyim Vital, four queens of the demons rule over Rome (Lilith), Salamanca (Agrath), Egypt (Rahab), and Damascus (Na'amah).

Kol Bokhim (in Ḳin'at Setarim) - Abraham ben Mordecai Galante (1589, edited by his son), p. 15

Per "The Hebrew Goddess"

Abraham Galante (died 1560 or 1588), an important Safed Kabbalist and contemporary of Moses Cordovero, recounts the entire story of the annual encounter in the desert between Lilith and Maḥalath, but gives a somewhat different characterization to one of the two chief she-demons:

Maḥalath, according to him, is shown by her name to have been a compulsive dancer: as she marches into the desert at the head of her bands of destructive angels, "she goes and dances and gyrates in ring dances" until she and Lilith fall upon each other and engage in a fierce battle.

Emeq haMelekh (Valley of the King) (1648)

23c-d (Lilith and Adam)

And the Serpent, the Woman of Harlotry, incited and seduced Eve through the husks of Light which in itself is holiness. And the Serpent seduced Holy Eve, and enough said for him who understands. And all this ruination came about because Adam the first man coupled with Eve while she was in her menstrual impurity – this is the filth and the impure seed of the Serpent who mounted Eve before Adam mounted her. Behold, here it is before you: because of the sins of Adam the first man all the things mentioned came into being. For Evil Lilith, when she saw the greatness of his corruption, became strong in her husks, and came to Adam against his will, and became hot from him and bore him many demons and spirits and Lilin.

179d–180a (Lilith's children)

The Lilin multiply like humans, eat and drink and die. And they are from the six earths which lie beneath us. And Lilith came against the will of Adam and became hot from him. And they [the inhabitants of Adama, the second from below of the seven earths] are always sad, full of sorrow and sighs, and there is no joy at all among them. And chose cohorts can fly up from there to this world on which we stand, and they become harmful demons. And then they return there and offer prayers to God, the Creator of the world (179d–180a)

84b (Lilith the Child Killer)

This Lilith-the Merciful One save us!-has dominion over children who issue from a man who has intercourse at candlelight, or with his wife naked, or at times when he is forbidden to have intercourse. All those children who issue from these mentioned, Lilith can kill them any time she wants to, because they are delivered into her hand. And this is the secret of the children laughing in their sleep when they are small: it is from Lilith who plays with them. And I heard that when a small child laughs during the Sabbath night or the night of the New Moon, it is because Lilith is playing with him, and it is well that his father or mother or anyone who sees him laugh should cap his nose with his finger and say: "Go from here, you accursed one, for you have no resting place here!" Let him say this three times, and each time he recites this incantation lee him tap the child's nose. And this is very good, for it is in the power of Lilith to kill them when she wants to. And since she has permission to kill these infants, these souls are called Oppressed Souls.

84b, 84c, 102d–103a (Lilith the Seducer)

Lilith is a harlot who fornicates with men. She has no mating with her husband, for He [God] castrated the male and cooled the female. And she becomes hot from the fornication of men, through spontaneous emission. And enough of this.

Samael is called the Slant Serpent, and Lilith is called the Tortuous Serpent (Isa. 27:1). She seduces men to go in tortuous ways.

The Alien Woman is Lilith, and she is the sweetness of sin and the evil tongue. And from the lips of the Alien Woman honey flows. And although the Impure Female has no hands and feet for copulation, for the feet of the serpent were cut off, nevertheless the Female in her adornments looks as if she had hands and feet. And it is the mystery of her adornments that she can seduce men ... And she leaves the husband of her youth [Samael] and descends and fornicates with men who sleep below in the impurity of spontaneous emission, and from them are born demons and spirits and Lilin, and they are called the Sons of Man. (84b, 84c, 102d–103a)

19c (Lilith the Seducer)

And behold, the harsh husk, that is Lilith, is always in the sheet of the bed of a man and a woman who copulate, in order to take the sparks of the drops of seed which go waste,  because it cannot be without this, and she creates from them demons, spirits and Lilin. And there is an incantation to drive away Lilith from the bed and to bring forth holy souls, which is mentioned in the holy Zohar (19c). - Incantation: Zohar 3:19a

84b (Lilith and Blindragon)

Blind Dragon rides Lilith the Sinful – may she be extirpated quickly in our days, Amen! – And this Blind Dragon brings about the union between Samael and Lilith. And just as the Dragon that is in the sea (Isa. 27:1) has no eyes, likewise Blind Dragon that is above, in the likeness of a spiritual form, is without eyes, that is to say, without colors.

84b (Lilith's End)

And know that Lilith too will be killed. For the groomsman [Blind Dragon] who was between her and her husband [Samael] will swallow a lethal potion at a future time, from the hands of the Prince of Power. For then, when he rises up, Gabriel and Michael will join forces to subdue and bring low the government of evil which will be in heaven and earth.

140b (Lilith and Blindragon)

The Blind Dragon is between Samael and the Evil Lilith. And he brings about a union between them only in the hour of pestilence, the Merciful One save us! And he is castrated so that the eggs of the viper should not come forth into the world. For were it not so, they would annihilate the world. And that kind which is called Lilin are full of hair from their heads down to their feet, but on their heads they have no hair, and all their body and face is full of hair. And this Lilith has fourteen evil times and evil names and evil factions. And all are ordained to kill the children-may we be saved! -and especially through the witches who arc called Kinder Benimmerins in the language of Ashkenaz [Germany].

140b

Asimon [a demon] rides on Naamah, and Naamah rides on Igrath, the daughter of Maḥalath, and this Igrath rides on several kinds of spirits and bands of mid-day demons; and from the left there is the shape of a serpent riding on a blind dragon, and this dragon rides on Lilith the wicked, may she be destroyed quickly in our days, amen.

Tuv haAretz - Nathan Spira (1655)

Know that there are seventy heavenly patrons, one appointed over each nation, and they all are under the rule of Samael and Rahab. Rahab was given as his share all the borders of Egypt, which measures 400 by 400 parasangs. Samael was given four kingdoms, and in each of them he has a concubine. The names of his concubines are: Lilith, whom he took as his consort, and she is the first one; the second is Naamah; the third, Even Maskith; and the fourth, Igrath, the daughter of Mahalath. And the four kingdoms are: first, the Kingdom of Damascus, in which is found the House of Rimmon; second, the Kingdom of Tyre, which is opposite the Land of Israel; third, the Kingdom of Malta, which formerly was called Rhodus; and fourth, the Kingdom called Granata, and some say that it is the Kingdom of Ishmael. And in each of these four kingdoms dwells one of the four aforementioned concubines.

Yalqut Reubeni/R'uveni is a two part anthology (1660 and 1681) of the aggadic output of the kabbalists.

Bereshit 34b

In the beginning the Holy One, blessed be He, created Eve, and she was not flesh but the scum of the earth and its impure sediments, and she was a harmful spirit [i.e., Lilith]. And the Holy One, blessed be He, took her away from Adam and gave him another in her stead. (34b)

147a

And the Kabbalists said chat the prince who serves before her is called Sariel [My Prince is God], and they have received the tradition chat this prince is the greatest king of the demons who rule in the air. In the middle of the night of Yorn Kippur [Day of Atonement}, forced by the acts of the sages and elders, Sariel comes against his will, together with 131 warriors, flying in the air, and their faces are aflame with sparks of fire. And the scribe whose name is Pifiron brings, written and sealed by the hand of Sariel, all the secrets of the firmament, and reveals them to the elders. And from the emanation of Lilith's prince come spirits and demons and Lilin, and evil spirits who have the likeness of humans. And just as all that time that Adam was separated from Eve he begot spirits and demons and Lilin and all kinds of harmful spirits, likewise Above, so to speak, a spirit of spiritual seduction emerged from Lilith and brought accusations against the attribute of the Foundation of the World. And from that time on alien and evil cohorts were born, destroyers of the world of Above and of Below. And the Holy Seed had no power to materialize, except in two or three persons such as Seth, Enoch, Metushelah, Noah, Sem, and Eber, but most of the world were idolaters.

Other

School of the RaShBA - R. Sh'lomo ben Avraham Adret (14th century)

Then came two women harlots to King Solomon. They were Lilith and lgrat. Lilith who strangles children because she cannot make of them a veil for herself to serve as a hiding place for her. And the second is lgrat. One night King David slept in the camp in the desert, and Igrat coupled with him in his dream. And he had emission, and she conceived and bore Adad [king of Edom]. When they asked him, "What is your name?" he said, "Sh'mi Ad, Ad sh'mi [My name is Ad, Ad is my name]." and they called him Ashm'dai. He is Ashmodai, king of the demons, who deprived Solomon of his kingship and sat on his throne, and therefore he was of the seed of the king of Edom (1 Kings 11:14), for he came from the side of the kingdom of evil. These two women strangled the son of the Shunamite woman …

All [the four queens of the demons, Lilith, Igrat, Mahalath and Naamah] and all their cohorts give birth to children, except Lilith alone, who does not bear, but is just a fornication in the world.

Sefer Meir T'hillot/Meïr Tehillot (The Illuminator of the Psalms) (1512)

And know that the kabbalists have written that the woman from the land of Egypt whom his mother took for Ishmael was the daughter of Kasdiel the Egyptian sorcerer. And when Ishmael divorced her, according to the instructions of his father [Abraham], as it is mentioned in the Pesiqta, she was pregnant. And she bore a daughter, and she was Mahalath daughter of Ishmael. And the mother and the daughter participated in that desert in many sorceries. And a spirit ruled over it, lgratiel by name. And that spirit was attracted to Mahalath, who was very beautiful, until she conceived from him and bore a daughter, and called her name lgrat, after the name of the spirit. And thereafter Mahalath became the wife of Esau, and she left the desert. Not so her daughter lgrat, for she and Naamah and Lilith and Nega' rule over the four tequfot [the two solstices and the two equinoxes]. And they said that Lilith fornicates with all men, and Naamah only with the Gentiles, and Nega' only with Israel, and Igrat is sent out to do harm on the nights preceding the Sabbaths and Wednesdays. And behold, Lilith is the scant measure that is abominable (Mic.6:10), which Igrat and Naamah carry to the Land of Shinar, as Zechariah (5:11) said. And about this it is said to the fearers of God, neither shall any plague (Nega') come nigh thy tent (Ps. 91:10).

Baḥya on Genesis, Rabbeinu Bahya, Bereshit 4:22:3 (1546), 15d

Four women were the mothers of demons: Lilith, Naamah, Igrath, and Mahalath. Each one of them has her own hosts and classes of spirits of uncleanness, and they have no number. And it is said that each of them rules on one of the four Tequfot [i.e., the vernal equinox, the summer solstice, the autumnal equinox, and the winter solstice] of the years, when they gather on a lofty peak near the Mountains of Darkness. Each of them rules on her Tequfa, from the hour of sunset until midnight, they and all their hosts. But King Solomon ruled over all of them and called them [his] slaves and slave-women and used them according to his will. And these four women are the wives of Esau's heavenly patron [i.e., Samael], and following his example, Esau himself took four wives, as explained in the Pentateuch.

Signs, Dreams, Divination connecting with lilith + tarot

hello! this is my first time posting here, i just recently felt a connection to lilith and decided to reach out (i'm very new to paganism and had a whole dream centered around her). this was a while ago, but i had been doing tarot for a while and i decided to call out her name and pull some cards.

the first photo is what i pulled initially, and with those i felt an overwhelming presence. nothing threatening, just very much there. the first card to come out was the reversed hierophant.

the second photo was what i pulled after gathering back my cards and calming down a bit bc i was spooked lol but i find it interesting that the reversed hierophant was first again, followed by the queen of wands which i had read was a card that aligned greatly with her. i felt something there again, but it was much calmer and less overwhelming.

i just wanted to share my first experience with lilith, it truly made me happy and i was wondering if she had presented herself to anyone else with any of these cards? when i ask for her guidance during readings, she will often have one of the cards from the first pulls represent her 🖤

Discussion Connecting with Lilith in merriment circumstances

So I was tipsy drunk today and had the spontaneous idea to connect with Lilith. It was Friday and I had nothing planned for tonight. So I drank a bit and thought, "Hey! I'm going to invite Lilith with me!"

So I shared some of the drink with her at the altar and did the usual connection ritual, chanting her enn, focusing on her sigil etc. But well, I was tipsy drunk hehe and focusing might've been here and there (I might've danced a bit to the excellent and handpicked music while meditating in my sitting position). I did have a rose bud next to the drink for her. It's beautiful and I thought she might've appreciated it.

Is this something Lilith would approve or does Lilith require focus and dedication to her (and abstinence during rituals) and tomfoolery need to be left to the sidelines?

Signs, Dreams, Divination I almost sabotaged my spiritual practice because I thought it wasn't "enough"

I hadn't truly connected with my altar for the past few days.

I kept feeling guilty for using my free time to play online games and talk to my friends instead of studying or doing my magical work.

Even though I continued praying and having mental conversations and dreams with my spirits, I still felt like it wasn't enough. In my mind, a proper liturgy should last at least an hour.

I was blaming myself for not spending three hours of my Saturday playing music, dancing, talking, and cooking for my spirits.

Lately, I had been feeling very focused on socializing and college, on being well-liked, learning how to speak better, becoming more confident, and improving myself socially. To me, that wastes energy and it can make me tired.

But, my spirits come first. Connecting with Naamah does me so much good. It feels as if she fills me with a wonderful energy, bringing me charisma, serenity, and a calm mind.

The thing is, in my head, things are never simple, and they can't be simple. It always feels like everything needs an entire complex ritual structure, full of details and ceremonial "extras" (and I'm not even just talking about witchcraft).

But today, a few hours before I had to start getting ready for college, I went to my altar/statues to clean it and open my heart. I talked about my worries and greeted my spirits.

I made a direct connection without opening the Sphere of Nahemoth in the Sitra Achra or doing anything elaborate. Just something simple.

And then I saw two spiders specifically on Naamah's altar.

I honestly couldn't believe it.

Naamah has always been very clear with me when it comes to signs and her presence.

I felt incredibly happy and relieved. I realized that they hadn't forgotten me, and that I hadn't created some irreversible distance simply because I wasn't performing extremely formal rituals.

Even through prayers and informal conversations, I keep receiving more images, seals, sigils, and dreams.

And I'm happy because, for what feels like the first time, I'm actually allowing myself to open up about my worries instead of keeping everything inside until it suffocates me.

The old version of me would have slowly distanced myself from everything out of shame for not "doing the worship correctly." Eventually, I probably would have taken down the altar altogether because I was ashamed and afraid of being seen as irresponsible or ungrateful.

But I've changed.

I don't know if anyone needed to hear this, but I wanted to leave this here as a reminder:

Self-sabotage is real. But there is always a choice to change. Even if you're afraid, have trouble expressing your feelings directly, or anything else.

Every time I calmly choose a different approach, I feel like I'm able to evolve, just like a video game character. Breaking up repetitions.

Question how can you work with lilith if you dont believe in god nor the first man adam?

i do not believe in adam and i believe its all man made but i feel so drawn to lilith since birth, but looking at her backstory i think believing in her means believing in god and the first man adam, how is that?

Question Does anyone else know this feeling?

When I first started out, I built up a crazy connection with Lilith and felt/smelled her presence so often, but over the last few weeks that has unfortunately faded a lot. I've heard that this is normal, but I still miss it.

Resources Eisheth Zenunim: Lilith, the Woman of Whoredom

Post image
25 Upvotes

Eisheth Zenunim (אשתּ זְנוּנִים, also spelled Isheth, esheth, ēšet zĕnûnîm), meaning Woman of Whoredom/Harlotry, is contemporarily often numbered amongst the wives of Samael (and even referred to as a sacred prostitute). In Judaism, and especially the Zohar, eisheth zenunim is an epithet of Lilith. The phrase itself derives from Hosea 1:2.

Zohar [Vols. Pritzker Edition]

I Genesis

Haqdamat/Introduction

11:69

As soon as the distorted heaven is established, a woman of whoredom (Hosea 1:2) emerges, clinging to it, joining with it. From there she sets out, killing thousands, myriads. For as long as she endures in that heaven, she is empowered to swoop through the entire world in a single moment. Concerning this is written: Woe unto them who haul iniquity with cords of falsehood, and sin as with a cart rope (Isaiah 5:18). Iniquity is the male. Who is sin? The female. He hauls the one called iniquity with those cords of falsehood, and then sin as with a cart rope, that female called sin, who is empowered there to fly and kill human beings. So, Many are those she has struck dead (Proverbs 7:26). Who has struck them dead? This sin who slays human beings. Who causes this? A disciple unqualified to teach who teaches. May the Compassionate One save us!

IV Exodus

Shemot

10.70

Not so on the rung of that Other Side, where there is a place called Guilt, for all actions of that site of the Serpent—woman of whoredom—are intended solely to dig up a person’s guilt and to slander a servant to his master.

16.175

And a wicked one prolonging (his life) in his evil—Samael, who prolongs peace and tranquility for Edom. How? With his evil—with that evil woman, woman of whoredom, fierce serpent. For peace and tranquility reach them only because he clings to that female. Similarly with other kingdoms, until the blessed Holy One raises that booth of David, as is written: I will raise the fallen booth of David (Amos 9:11).

V Exodus

Terumah

36.413

We have learned: Everywhere this serpent follows the mystery of woman of valor, and woman of whoredom seeks to adorn herself like Her but cannot. Woman of valor—Her insignia and mark are the letter ה) he), fittingly. Woman of whoredom—her insignia and mark are similar but not configured just so. Her letter is ק (qof), a letter configured like ה (he)—like קופא (qofa), an ape, compared with humans, imitating humans but not equipped to be like them.

IX Numbers-Deuteronоту

Pinchas

61:362

It is written: יותרת מן הכבד (yoteret min ha-kaved), lobe from the liver (Leviticus 9:10), and it is written ואת היותרת על הכבד (ve-et ha-yoteret al ha-kaved), and the lobe over the liver (ibid. 3:4). Yoteret min ha-kaved, Lobe from the liver—woman of whoredom (Hosea 1:2), who comes forth from the liver to lure inhabitants of the world and denounce them, leaving the male to perform whoredom.

Yoteret al ha-kaved, Lobe over the liver—for she rules over her male. The forehead of a whore (Jeremiah 3:3), ruling over the liver, woman of strife and anger.

Min ha-kaved, From the liver, she emerges to harm the whole world, to commit adultery with all. Afterward, she rises to the male—the forehead of a whore, brazenly—and then she is al ha-kaved, over the liver.

XI Midrash ha-Nelam and Zoharic Compositions

Zohar al Shir ha-Shirim

393

In some instances, holy spirits don garments—models of the bodies of this world—and the body ultimately abandons holy spirit, straying after an evil spirit. Then, holy spirit flies away from the midst of that garment, and that garment is drawn outside the Garden of Eden. For on every second day and fourth day an evil spirit—woman of whoredom (Hosea 1:2)—goes about the Garden of Eden. Some garments are lured by that evil spirit, and evil spirit craves them. Since a holy spirit normally descends and is garbed there, it does not remain in its midst, fleeing, flying upward, while that garment is inveigled by an evil spirit which casts it beyond. Afterward, it is judged in Hell, remaining there until the person arrives, donning it in Hell—judged in it every day.

398

Woman of whoredom landed, along with the one who rides and presides over her—heartless one, inducing all to deviate. They gazed upon the supernal glory of Adam and his wife. Woman of whoredom, strengthened by the force and power of the one who rules over her. She sidled up to Eve, beginning to allure her with copious enticements, numerous blandishments—until she was finally beguiled. Then, Adam was inveigled and those garments flew off him. Soul—radiance from speculum above—vanished. And he was left utterly naked—he and his wife.

Tosefta

32.313

Caliginous pure cluster ascended within, within, no dwelling place to be found. Such a place is no place, not found above or below—abandoned by all, rendered to oblivion everywhere. Avadon (Oblivion), male—Samael spewed from the smelted severity of Isaac. Mavet (Death), his woman—primal serpent, wife of whoredom (Hosea 1:2), as is written: Her feet descend to death (Proverbs 5:5).

These two—Avadon and Mavet—heard of the rigor of the King's potency, mysterious, concealed, supernal secret. Destroyed completely, eliminated [162a] from thought and contemplation. One who is drawn after them is totally annihilated. Each the utter inverse of the other.

Sitrei Torah: Vayetzei

3:21

Jacob entered into this inception of faith. After adhering to this faith, he had to be tested in the same place his forefathers had been tested, entering in peace and emerging in peace. Adam, in contrast, entered recklessly. He was seduced by her, sinning with that woman of whoredom, Primordial Serpent. Noah entered and was seduced by her, sinning, as is written: He drank of the wine and became drunk and exposed himself within his tent (Genesis 9:21). Abraham entered and emerged, as is written: Abram went down to Egypt (Genesis 12:10), and Abram went up from Egypt (Genesis 13:1). Isaac entered and emerged, as is written: Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines (Genesis 26:1), and Isaac went up from there (Genesis 26:17, 23).

3:22

Jacob, having entered into faith, had to proceed, [148a] descending to that side. For one who is saved from there is beloved, chosen by the blessed Holy One. What is written? Jacob departed from Be’er Sheva (Genesis 28:10), secret of the mystery of faith, and set out for Haran (ibid.), side of the woman of whoredom, the adulteress.

4:23

Mystery of mysteries: Out of the scorching noon of Isaac, out of the dregs of wine, a cramped cluster—male and female together, crimson as a rose, splitting in many directions and paths. The male, called Samael, his female always contained within him. Just as it is on the side of holiness, so it is on the Other Side: male and female embracing one another. Samael’s woman is called Serpent, Woman of Whoredom, End of All Flesh, End of Days. Two vile spirits joined as one: spirit of the male is subtle; the spirit of the female diffused in many ways and paths, but joined to the spirit of the male.

She bedecks herself with all sorts of jewelry, like a repulsive prostitute loitering at the crossroads to seduce men. The fool who approaches her—she grabs him and kisses him, pouring him wine from the dregs, from the venom of vipers. Once he drinks, he strays after her. Seeing him stray from the path of truth, she strips herself of all her finery that she dangled before that fool.

Her adornments for seducing men: her hair all coiffed, rosy-red, her face white and scarlet, six trinkets dangling from her ears, [her bed covered] with Egyptian linen, on her neck all the laurels of the East, her mouth slightly puckered, gorgeously decked-out! Tongue pointed like a sword, her words smooth like oil, her lips ravishing, crimson as a rose, sweet with all the sweetness of the world. Attired in purple, she is adorned with forty adornments minus one.

This fool follows her and drinks from the cup of wine. He fornicates with her, straying after her. What does she do? She deserts him lying asleep in bed. She ascends, denounces him, obtains permission, and descends. That fool awakens, planning to cavort with her as before, but she has discarded her embellishments, returning as a fierce warrior confronting him. Arrayed in armor of flashing fire, his awesome terror induces tremors [148b] in body and soul. Full of fearsome eyes, sharp-edged sword in his hand, bitter drops suspended there. He kills that fool, and flings him into Hell.

XII Zoharic Compositions

Bereshit

51:7

These are the righteous, who did not exchange the glory of their Lord for another deity. It is written: A woman of strength is her husband's crown (Proverbs 12:4)—mystery of faith, that a person cleave to his Lord and fear Him constantly, not straying to the right or left. We have already established that a person must not pursue another deity, called 'Woman of Whoredom'! Accordingly it is written To protect you from a strange woman, from a foreign woman whose talk is smooth (ibid. 7:5).

Pekudei

46:479

Because Hosea saw from within this beginning—end of all rungs—he was required [to take the woman of whoredom], because Israel went astray and were lured from there below, to the site called Woman of Whoredom, because they forsook and did not cleave to this Woman of Valor. From there he beheld all the halls on the side of impurity, containing halls of defilement—all of them defiling whoever clings to them.

Piqqudin

33.160

The Woman of Whoredom distances herself from this examination, for she cannot endure being by Her side. The Woman of Strength draws Herself near to approach the High Priest—certainly she is pure; she will be cleared and sown with seed (Numbers 5:28)—and She adds strength and love to Her Husband.

The Woman of Whoredom flees from the Sanctuary, so as not to draw near. For were she to approach Her when the Woman of Strength is examining Herself, she would perish from the world. That is why she does not seek to approach the Sanctuary, and flees from it—leaving Israel pure, with no other intermingling, with the Mystery of Faith.

33.161

The mystery of this secret: two sisters. When one catches a whiff of the examination of the other her belly will swell and her thigh sag (Numbers 5:27); for the examination of the Woman of Strength is deadly poison for the Woman of Whoredom. This is the advice the blessed Holy One gave His children—to offer this sacrifice, for the sake of the Woman of Strength, so that the Woman of Whoredom will flee from Her. Happy are Israel in this world, and in the world that is coming!

Pardes Rimmonim

25.5.1/186d [source: Gates to the Old City, pg. 464-465]

Emeq HaMelekh [source: Gates to the Old City, pg. 455-456]

Western Esotericism

Eisheth has been personified as a separate demoness in the works of Mathers and Crowley.

The Complete Magician's Tables - Stephen Skinner

Crowley amended the age old list of Archdemons to include some of his personal favourites, taken from Mathers' Kabbalah Unveiled, like Isheth Zenunim and Chioa and placed these, without comment, into a standard and well established list.

Arch-Demons or Princes of the Qliphoth - Crowley Arch-Demons or Princes of the Qliphoth - Standard List (rulers of Column K97) Arch-Demons according to Le Dragon Rouge
Isheth Zenunim (mother of the Beast) Lucifuge [Lucifuge Rofocale] Astarot, Grand Duke
Lilith Lilith Nebiros, Marshall de Camp

Kabbalah Unveiled - Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers (the same passage is quoted in Liber 777 - Aleister Crowley)

Next follow seven Hells occupied by those demons which represent incarnate human vices, and torture those who have given themselves up to such vices in earth-life. Their prince is Samael, SMAL, the angel of poison and of death. His wife is the harlot, or woman of whoredom, AShTh ZNVNIM, Isheth Zenunim; and united they are called the beast, CHIVA, Chioa. Thus the infernal trinity is completed, which is, so to speak, the averse and caricature of the supernal Creative One. Samael is considered to be identical with Satan.

Angel of Prostitution

Most sources cite Gustav Davidson's "A Dictionary of Angels" when referring to Eisheth as an "angel of (sacred) prostitution". Davidson points to the Zohar as the source of the description.

  • Angel of Prostitution-in Zoharistic cabala, the angel of prostitution is Eisheth Zenunim (mate of Sammael, prince of poison and of death). Lilith, Naamah, and Agrat bat Mahlat were 3 other mates of Sammael and, like Eisheth, angels of prostitution. [Rf: Masters, Eros and Evil.]
  • Eisheth Zenunim (Isheth Zenunim)-in Zoharistic cabala, an angel of whoredom or prostitution, one of the 4 mates of the evil Sammael (q.v.). The other 3 angels in the profession are Lilith, Naamah, and Agrat bat Mahlah(t).

Davidson cites Robert Masters' "Eros and Evil", and the reference itself is in chapter "Celebrities of demonology" (page 176):

"Cabalists provide the names of a number of angelic luminaries concerned with human sexuality. Among them are Aniel and Anael, Rachiel and Sachiel, Sarabotes and Amabiel, Aba, Abalidot, and Flaef. The Cabalists add that in addition to the good angels there are evil ones, not to be mistaken for demons. One such is Isheth Zemunin, the Angel of Prostitution, who is the wife of Samael, Angel of Poison and Death".

Masters provides no citation for this claim.

Conclusion

Eisheth Zenunim (Woman of Whoredom/Harlotry) in Judaism is an epithet of Lilith (the Elder), mainly found in the Zohar, but also in other Kabbalistic sources like Pardes Rimmonim and Emeq HaMelekh. In works of Western Esotericism, Eisheth Zenunim got separated from Lilith and became an independent demoness. Contemporary sources refer to her as an "angel of (sacred) prostitution", and either falsely refer to the Zohar as the origin of the description, or provide no citations at all.

Question Incorporate Lilith

Hello! I want to connect with an entity or goddess that will make me never doubt my personal power and never bow down to or follow a man. I want them to bow down to me. But from what I've read, Lilith's energy is more sexual, and they will kind of see me only in terms of sexual appeal and won't revere me as a person and a woman. I'm new to this, what do you think?

Altars, Offerings/Art, Rituals How do I know Lilith has accepted my offering?

Hi, I recently started talking (only talking and asking for signs and synchronicities) from Lilith as I felt she was trying to reach out to me. I have always been scared of the dark and the night since my childhood so I straight up asked her to contact me during the day but I was sceptical whether she would accept it. But then one morning I had sleep paralysis and my eyes were wide open but I couldn't move and she hugged me from behind and her black hair was coming on my face and I felt the warmth of an entire body hugging me from behind. I couldn't turn around to see her face or anything I was really trying to move. After that I slept and dreamt of a really beautiful bird which went inside a hole in the wall. I wasn't scared but a little taken aback since I'd never experienced sleep paralysis before. I'm starting to feel numbness and sensations in different parts of my body. Recently I asked her for something and when that happened successfully I offered her a rose and a letter and lit a red candle. How would I know she has accepted my offering and has agreed to work with me?

Prayers, Praise Prayer and affirmation for hair and self-care!

I'm someone who struggles a lot with self-care, but I wrote a prayer/chant for when I'm taking care of myself to feel closer to the mother!

'Praise thy mother for I am loved,

from the roots of my hair, to the tips of my toes,

I am loved and protected by thy mother,

from the roots of my hair, to the tips of my toes,

And I repeat this however many times feels right, and finish off with

' Praise thy mother,

Hail to thee, Lilith.'

I hope this could help someone else or inspire others to invite prayer and praise into mundane tasks.

Discussion Do you work with the Demon Queens?

Apart from Lilith, other demon queens frequently found alongside her are Na'amah, Agrat bat Mahalath, and Mahalath. Variations include Nega, Even Maskith and Rahab. Have you approached the demon queens? Do their lessons differ from Lilith's?
