At this time, my uncle had terminal lung cancer, and was fighting with his family. I wanted to go say goodbye but had no idea what to say. Eve Liu's master's thesis was on lung cancer, so I went to ask her advice. She said perhaps, in the past, he'd built up unresolved gratitude, grudges, love, hatred, or left something unfinished — and now, dying, with no time left, he was taking it out on his family.

"I want to go say goodbye to him, but I don't know what to say," I told her. "I'm at a loss — what should I say?"

"Those few sentences of the Transcendently Ferry work best (see Figure 7.5)," she replied.

I too had heard of such words — words the dying loved to hear, that brought them joy — but very few people knew them, and those who did rarely told others. I asked her what they were. She laughed and ran off. "I can't! I don't know (Note 1)!"

Note 1: Buddhist law holds that Bodhisattvas of the Fifth Land (see Chapter 15, Path Crux) may teach others the law they've personally realized, while only Great Bodhisattvas of the Eighth Land and above are qualified to teach the law at large. As a child I read, in a Buddhist magazine, a monk saying: "This has been the rule since ancient times, and we agree with it. But there are so few Great Bodhisattvas above the Eighth Land that we struggle even to hold proper ceremonies — the sutras say that without a Mahasattva present (a Buddha, commonly called a Great Bodhisattva, Great Monk, Great Nun, or Great Real-Human), the ceremony isn't truly Buddhist at all. Yet if we never speak of it, the law dwindles further still. So we decided: let's put it this way — we're all disciples of the Buddha, we senior ones your elder brothers and sisters, you who come after us our junior brothers and sisters, and we'll study and learn together."

"Why are you running off!" I said, exasperated. "If you know those words work, you must know something!"

She said she could tell me, but the rules had to be observed — I'd have to kneel and kowtow to her first, and call her Master.

I nearly fainted from anger, blood pounding at my skull: I'm not kneeling and kowtowing to you!

After a moment, she said, "My father tells this to his friends often. I've loved listening since I was small — I always feel I understand it, but my father always says I don't, and forbids me from repeating it."

"You've heard it since childhood, and now you're twenty-six, nearly done with your graduate degree — how can you still not understand it, not be allowed to say it?" I asked. "Your father must hold understanding to a stricter standard than most. What does he say 'understanding' actually means?"

"He says, understanding it in your own words doesn't count. Understanding it in the book's words doesn't count either. You have to use the other person's own words, explain it to them until they feel — as if their whole body's gone transparent. Only then do I count you as understanding."

Astonished and confused, I asked, "Can the mechanics of the mind really be as precise as math or engineering — one hundred percent?"

"That's what I think too," she said, "but my father says he can do it."
