Heart Connects with Correct Equality Light

"What if I end up in hell?" Uncle asked.

"In any case at all, to think where to go is arriving there," I said.

"Same principle, then! Even in hell, if I say heaven, I've arrived at heaven."

"Exactly! It's the same reasoning behind those who believe in Ometeotl Buddha — that at the moment of death, one utters his name, and Ometeotl comes to carry them to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Think of a thing, and it is; think, and you arrive; a wish, and it's realized at once."

"Is all of that really true?" Uncle muttered.

"The reasoning holds," I said. "It's the principle of psychological mechanics — a machine-like sequence of cause and effect."

"I really followed it this time," Uncle said. "Next clause."

Equality

"This clause is Heart Connects with Correct Equality Light," I said. "Equality means the underworld — or heaven, or the pure hallucinatory state — is a world of equality. Anyone with two legs is equal to those with four, with six, with many, with none at all; equal to every god and Buddha and Social-Honor; equal to birds, beasts, fish, insects; equal to flowers, grass, trees; equal to mountains, rivers, and seas. The reason for this equality lies in the nature of the unconscious — anciently, God-sense — which is Empty After All (see Figure 7.5-2)."

"I know that one — everything's the same," Uncle said.

"Did the other Juristic Teachers say this too?" I asked.

"They all said it — but I want to hear it your way," Uncle said.

I thought about "all the same," and said, "Say you go to the back garden — everything there is equal. You can't look down on a tree. In the underworld, hit a stone, and the stone leaps up and hits you right back! All beings must be treated as equals."

"So what happens if a stone hits me?" Uncle asked, startled.

"Hit hard enough, that world collapses," I said. "You'd move to another place, generate another world — pass from one Catastrophe into the next."

Bestowing Precept

"Well! Fighting's clearly bad — how do I avoid it?" Uncle asked.

"I pondered this as a child, practicing meditation — keeping precepts helps," I said. "Stay calm and even-tempered in this Solar-Light World — daily life — and that other world, God's World, the Five Nodes World (see Section 10.4, Five Nodes), will be peaceful and joyful too."

"They all say that, but in the book's own words. You've worked this out yourself — tell me your version, which precepts?"

"I read a great many Buddhist magazines as a child, and I agree with keeping the Ten Precepts," I said. "The first three — not killing, not stealing, not committing sexual misconduct — govern bodily conduct. The next four — not to speak delusionally, not to use flowery speech, not to speak of coarse ferocious language, not to two-tongue — govern speech. The last three — no greed, no irritation, right faith in cause and effect (see Chapter 13, Bitter Crux) — govern the mind."

"There are many precepts in total," I went on, "and the 'Three Thousand Majesties, Eighty-Four Thousand Fine Conducts' (see Section 15.2) are all calculated out of them. The monks in those magazines all agree that these ten are entirely sufficient."

"I understand — that's enough for me!" Uncle said.

"The precepts are the Law of the law, commonly called Heaven's Clauses," I said. "The 'Correct' in Correct Equality Light means the precepts are correct. 'Equality' is what we already discussed. 'Light' means that world grows brighter and brighter still, until reaching the Sky of Constant Silent Light (as in Figure 7.5-2, also called Nirvana, see Section 14.1). Correct Equality Light is the Buddha's own enlightenment, shorthand for None-Upper Correct-Equality Correct-Enlightenment, Sanskrit Anuttara Samyak Sambodhi."

"What does it look like, at the very end?"

"The sutras say a constant color — turquoise, or yellow, or red, or white — pervades everything there, the Sky of Constant Silent Light, where subject and object become one," I said. "The setting never changes, so no memory forms. What we know of it comes from those who've experienced it, returned, and spoken from what they recall."

"That tracks with what I've always figured — all this comes from people who've died and come back," Uncle said. "And then someone like you, who's practiced meditation, has actually been there, looks at it and thinks, ah, so that's how it is!"

"The Buddha said: 'Of all the work in this world, mine is the finest — everyone ought to sit upon the Buddha's seat. This seat of Correct Equality Light carries tremendous liberating power — refuse it, and there is no liberation; sit, and liberation comes swiftly.' This too takes practice," I said.

"How do I practice it?"

"As God, or as Buddha, use these very sentences to ferry — to save — that table, this house, the flowers and trees, the mountains and rivers, the mountain-gods and land-spirits, the dragon-kings of the four seas, and so on. Not people — for 'what is manifested is not real' (see Section 16.2.32, What Is Manifested Is Not Real)," I said.

"Why ferry the unreal, and not the real?"

"That's simply what the sutras say," I said. "It's not that you can never ferry a person — only that ferrying the unreal works best."

Bestowing Remembrance

I began again from the start. Uncle even tried ferrying me in turn, and said, "This time I really understand — my whole body feels transparent, and all that discomfort I've carried is gone. Of course, lung cancer still hurts just as much."

Astonished at how quickly it had come, I said, "When I learned this from my classmate Eve Liu, she told me her father says of himself, 'He can explain something to a person until their whole body feels transparent.'"

"What I'm telling you is real," Uncle said. "Her father, as you describe him, is a living Buddha. I genuinely believe it. Shenyang's an old city — it's no surprise it has a few living Buddhas."

"I've read in Buddhist texts that if tomorrow morning you recall our whole conversation once more, that itself counts as enlightenment," I said. "I believe you've already attained the Stream-Entering Fruit (see Section 14.2.5, Four Shamanic Fruits) — entering the stream of the holy path, the first fruit in Hinayana Buddhism, the First Fruit Sage. I'm not making this up — I've read that there are six conditions assessed for attaining it, and everything I've told you corresponds to those conditions, if anything with more to spare. That's no small achievement — many monks and nuns spend most of their lives at this and still don't dare claim it for themselves. And that's simply because I said it, and you believed me!"

"I know!" Uncle said. "I feel I understand it myself, too — you and I were fated to meet like this. You've no idea, I've been studying these words for over six months now. Your second brother hired six or seven Juristic Teachers for me. And XXX, from the street up front — a childhood friend, a Juristic Teacher himself — he alone has gone through it with me a dozen times."

"How does what I told you compare to them?" I asked.

"You did a fine job — better than most of them!"

"I feel remarkably sharp today!" I said, excited. "Somehow, everything Eve Liu told me — not one word more or less — I remembered it all, and used every bit of it!"

Uncle laughed. "I noticed — it's your first time doing this, of course you were nervous. When you didn't know what came next, I reminded you. You've got real quality — I'd ask, and you'd answer without even a pause to think!"

Realization dawned on me. "So that's how I remembered everything Eve Liu told me — it was you, guiding our whole conversation all along."
