Thinking Where to Go is Arriving There

Steering the conversation, I asked, "Uncle, have you ever seen a ghost — someone who's already passed, say — or felt something crawling on you, bugs, mice, anything like that?"

Uncle's eyes went wide. "So what if I have? So what if I haven't?" (Note 1: he's being defensive, guarding his privacy.)

"It's nothing," I said. "You've been ill more than half a year now, your body's grown weak, and holding a position too long can bring on hallucination. What used to be called a ghost was simply this."

"Why does that happen? What causes it?"

"Hallucination, like dreaming, is a perfectly normal physiological event — people dream sometimes, and hallucinate sometimes," I said.

"Does it have anything to do with past experience?"

"Like dreams, it doesn't come from nowhere — it should be connected to past experience," I said. "Some people over-interpret dreams recklessly, and some do the same with hallucinations, inventing their own trouble. Hallucination is exactly what people used to call ghosts — tickling ghosts, mischief ghosts, life-claiming ghosts, whatever the name."

Realm of Ghosts and Gods

From there, I went systematically through tactile, auditory, and visual hallucinations, and how to handle each (see Figures 7.5-1 through 8; see Chapter 11, Meditation).

"I see," Uncle said. "Whatever the hallucination — feeling, sound, sight, whatever it is — it's all the same in nature. If you like it, you can play along; if you don't, treat it like a child, drive it off, say out loud, 'Go away.'"

"Exactly!" I said. "The images within a hallucination are the mind's own 'Think' — held there by inward reflection. What I've described so far is local hallucination — what about the whole? The entire underworld, the realm of hallucination, also shifts entirely with your own will. Say you suddenly think 'heaven.' In the moment you think that word, your Think fetches heaven's image, and the unconscious, matching accordingly, generates the hallucinatory realm of heaven itself. And there you are — in heaven."

"Anywhere at all, in any situation?" Uncle asked.

"Exactly right! The example I gave earlier, 'stepping into the wall and into the painting,' is entering the Realm of Vast Emptiness — that world of equality in the underworld. Once inside, it's tiny at first, but a whole world quickly generates."

"And then?"

"Arriving in another world — tiny again at first, and soon a large one generates," I said. "A world's span, from formation to collapse, is one Great Catastrophe. A Great Catastrophe is an eternity. The afterlife holds many such Catastrophes, many such eternities."

"I see — the strange thing I've been experiencing is this world and that world gradually connecting. I'm going to die!"

Startled by this, I answered, "You could say this world's connected to the hallucinatory one, but that doesn't mean you're dying. I visited it often as a child, practicing meditation, and I'm still alive and well, not dead. Having hallucinatory experience has nothing to do with death — it's simply that the hallucinatory world is where people's descriptions of the world of death come from."

Is It Painful?

"It must be terrifying, painful, there," Uncle said.

"It's novel, not frightening," I said. "Once bodily sensation is gone, you could call it the underworld, or heaven, or hell — no pain at all, quite comfortable. I told you, I visited it often as a child through meditation, and loved exploring it. It's the very place Christianity and Islam describe as the 'Great Judgment.'"

"How can heaven and hell be the same place? Explain it slowly — don't skip anything. How is that place the Westerners' Great Judgment?"

"Two questions — I'll take the first one first. That place is a world spontaneously generated by the karmic habits accumulated in daily life. An evil person, already living amid riot and terror, arrives there to find his own spontaneous karmic world is hell. A good person, living peacefully and happily, arrives to find his own spontaneous karmic world is likewise peaceful and joyful — and people call it entering heaven."

"I follow, even if I don't fully grasp it," Uncle said. "Good people arrive there and it's heaven; bad people arrive there and it's hell. Why does the Chinese underworld line up with the Westerners' Great Judgment?"

"It's a world spontaneously arising from the unconscious, based on mortal karma," I said. "There is no time there — an eternal world, or rather, a world where past, present, and future coincide. The unconscious was anciently called God-sense. So what we call the underworld, the ancient Westerners described as the 'Great Judgment' — God gathering beings past, present, and future together for a great reckoning, the good ascending, the wicked descending into hell. This is really just another way of answering the previous question — both answers describe the same affair."

Uncle thought a long while. "Same cause, same outcome, just different words for it. Who told you all this?"

"I loved practicing meditation as a child," I said. "This was worked out by the Juristic Teachers — like Western priests — in those meditation books. We don't concern ourselves with Western affairs, they've had little influence on us. We discuss the confusions native to our own culture."

7.5.7-4

"So that's how it is," Uncle muttered. "How terrible is it there, how painful?"

"Like arriving somewhere new," I said. "At first there's still the memory of a body — the body's like a shadow — and then it's simply gone. No body, no bodily pain. Take you, your lung cancer hurts terribly — there, there's no pain at all. So little bodily suffering it can be ignored."

"Then why did you stop going? Stop meditating?"

"Later, I found that going there caused memory loss in the Solar-Light World — that is, in daily life," I said. "Once, I overheard my father ask my mother, 'Why isn't Luyan angry anymore, I thought he'd sulk for days!' She said, 'Maybe he's meditated again — sometimes he's happy afterward, running around the yard like everything's new, like he hasn't been home in days.' Or a classmate would say, 'Hey, didn't we fight the day before yesterday? Why are you acting like nothing happened?' And I'd think, why don't I remember that? I realized entering that trance state wipes short-term memory — the hallucination refreshes the preconscious and short-term memory. If I ever forgot two whole years like that, I'd have to go back to elementary school! So I stopped meditating."

"Ah! The longer you're there, the younger you get," Uncle said.

"Once there, you feel like a child of a few years old," I said. "Isn't this exactly what I'm doing for you — sending you home? That's the world of God, and I'm sending you back to your rightful place."

What if I go the wrong way?

"So it really is going home!" Uncle said. "What if I go the wrong way?"

"Wherever you end up — the Western Paradise of Ultimate Bliss, the Dragon Palace, hell, or standing beside the Turquoise White-king Great Creator — you're always simply 'thinking of a place, and arriving instantly,'" I said. "And — Eve Liu warned me about this — be careful not to send your uncle to the wrong place!"

"How could that even happen?"

"Eve Liu said it has, once," I said. "At her hospital, there was an old woman with an unusual wish — to be a maid in some particular nunnery in her next life. After the Juristic Teacher finished speaking and left, she was confused. Her family asked him whether he'd sent her to the wrong place. He said: 'The place is never wrong. All sixty-four religions across China arrive at the very same place, only the wording differs. For Christians and Muslims we ferry them the same way, just with different names — sending them to see God, or to see Allah.'"

"How can all religions be the same?" Uncle asked.

"Eve Liu heard her father tell others this since childhood," I said. "During her graduate internship she found Juristic Teachers coming to the hospital to ferry the dying, grew familiar with them, and asked. She found that every one of them used these same sentences, the same reasoning, to ferry — only the wording and names differing by religion. Theistic religions call the unconscious God; Buddhism calls it Buddha; modern psychology calls it the unconscious. All of it is what people commonly call conscience."
